Gravel Host has the lowest advertised entry price in the current set of provider pages, but it is not possible to name a universal cheapest host without your currency, taxes, billing term, location and required player count. The sensible low-cost choice is the smallest plan that leaves enough memory for your group, runs near the players and protects the world with usable backups. The figures below are provider-listed prices captured on October 13, 2026, not independent performance tests.

Current listed plans at a glance

These are the published tiers available in the reviewed provider pages. Prices are shown in the currencies displayed by each provider and are not converted, tax-adjusted or normalized to identical capacity.

Provider Plan Listed price RAM Player limit Notable listed features
Gravel Host Stick $2.99/month 2 GB Up to 4 Full file access, DDoS protection, instant setup, daily backups
Gravel Host Rock $5.99/month 4 GB Up to 6 Same advertised management and backup features
Gravel Host Crossbow $8.99/month 6 GB Up to 8 Same advertised management and backup features
Gravel Host Molotov $11.99/month 8 GB 8 Same advertised management and backup features
Shockbyte Survivor £7.40/month 4 GB 8 Automatic updates and backups, DDoS protection, support
Shockbyte Cannibal £13.32/month 5 GB 24 Automatic updates and backups, DDoS protection, support
Shockbyte Mutant £14.04/month 6 GB or more 36 or more Automatic updates and backups, DDoS protection, support

Gravel Host’s entry tier is the lowest numerical price shown, but dollars and pounds are different currencies and the plans do not offer the same player capacity. A lower sticker price can also be overtaken by sales tax, payment fees, exchange-rate charges or a longer billing commitment at checkout.

What “still good” means for a The Forest server

A cheap server is only useful if your group can connect reliably and recover its world after a mistake or outage. Evaluate five things together rather than selecting on monthly price alone.

#1 Best Overall
Renegade Game Studios Fox in the Forest Deluxe 2 Player Trick-Taking Game
  • Strategic 2-Player Trick-Taking: Master the art of winning just enough tricks without overcommitting, using clever card play and tactical decision-making to outmaneuver your opponent
  • New Module Variations: Three game modules (special cards, goal cards, poison cards) offer endless strategic combinations, keeping gameplay fresh and exciting for repeated plays
  • Premium Deluxe Components: Foil-stamped cards, all-new fairy-tale illustrations, and acrylic scoring tokens deliver a visually stunning and tactile experience that enhances every game
  • Quick 30-Minute Gameplay: Perfect for busy couples seeking quality time together, delivering strategic depth and meaningful competition in a compact, elegant format
  • Complete Game Package: Includes 33 base cards, nine special cards, 16 goal cards, three poison cards, two reference cards, 17 scoring tokens, and comprehensive rulebook
  • Capacity: Match the provider’s RAM and player cap to the number of people who will actually play at the same time. Do not pay for a large tier if four people are the permanent limit, but leave headroom if the group is growing.
  • Location: Select a data-center region close to most players. A nearby region generally gives a better starting point for latency than choosing solely by price.
  • World control: You should be able to reach configuration files and download the save. File access makes it possible to adjust settings and move the world if you cancel.
  • Backups: Check how often backups run, how long they are retained and whether you can restore one yourself. A backup that exists but cannot be retrieved is not a practical recovery plan.
  • Exit and support: Read the refund window, cancellation wording, support hours and save-download process before paying. These terms matter most when setup fails or the group stops playing.

Claims about “no lag,” perfect uptime or unlimited performance in advertising are not independent measurements. Treat them as claims to verify with a trial, refund policy or community evidence, not as guarantees.

Gravel Host: the lowest advertised starting tier

Gravel Host lists four The Forest plans. The Stick tier is aimed at a small group, while the higher tiers add memory and, up to Crossbow, a larger listed player limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan Monthly price Memory Listed capacity Best fit by the listing
Stick $2.99 2 GB Up to 4 players A small, fixed group
Rock $5.99 4 GB Up to 6 players A group that needs more headroom
Crossbow $8.99 6 GB Up to 8 players A larger regular group
Molotov $11.99 8 GB 8 players More memory without a higher listed cap

The product page advertises server locations in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, plus full file access, DDoS protection, instant setup and daily automatic backups retained for more than three years. Those are statements from the provider, not a third-party audit. Gravel Host describes the inclusion this way: “Every The Forest hosting plan includes full file access, DDoS protection, and instant setup.”

For a group of four or fewer, Stick is the obvious price-first candidate if the selected region is suitable and the checkout total remains acceptable. Move to Rock when six players are a genuine requirement or when the smallest tier leaves insufficient memory for your configuration. The published limits are not a promise that every workload will perform identically; keep the refund and migration options in mind.

Shockbyte: a higher-priced small tier with a larger listed cap

Shockbyte’s opened UK page uses pounds and starts with the Survivor plan at £7.40 per month. That tier lists 4 GB of RAM and eight players, which is a different proposition from a two-gigabyte, four-player entry plan. Its larger tiers are aimed at substantially bigger groups.

Plan Monthly price on the UK page Memory Listed capacity
Survivor £7.40 4 GB 8 players
Cannibal £13.32 5 GB 24 players
Mutant £14.04 6 GB or more 36 or more players

The page advertises automatic updates and backups, DDoS protection, global locations, 24/7 support and a 72-hour self-serve refund. Confirm that the same currency, locations and refund terms apply to your country before ordering. Shockbyte describes the product as a way to “create your own dedicated multiplayer world where you and your friends can explore, build, and survive together.” That is a company description, not an independent quality assessment.

Survivor can make financial sense when you need eight listed slots immediately, even though its pound price cannot be compared directly with Gravel Host’s dollar plans. For a group of four, paying for that capacity may be unnecessary unless the extra memory, region or support terms are more valuable to you.

How to compare the real cost before ordering

Use the following process at checkout. It prevents a low headline price from becoming an expensive or unsuitable server.

  1. Set the actual requirement. Write down the maximum simultaneous players, not the number in your chat group. Decide whether the world must remain online continuously or only during scheduled sessions.
  2. Convert currencies for your decision. Use your card issuer’s current exchange rate, then add any foreign-transaction fee. Do not treat a dollar amount and a pound amount as directly comparable.
  3. Choose the billing term you can accept. Check whether the advertised monthly figure assumes monthly billing, a prepaid period or a promotion. Record the renewal price rather than only the introductory figure.
  4. Review taxes and checkout fees. Enter your billing country and inspect the final total. The published pages do not establish a lowest after-tax price for every region.
  5. Confirm the region at the quoted price. Some hosts show multiple locations but may vary availability or price by location. Select the region nearest the majority of players.
  6. Read the cancellation and refund terms. Note the deadline, whether the refund is self-serve, and whether a cancellation deletes the server immediately.
  7. Test the control panel and save handling. Verify that you can upload or download files, edit the listed settings and obtain a copy of the world before inviting everyone.

Which tier fits your group?

Two to four players

Start by pricing Gravel Host’s Stick plan. Its listing provides 2 GB of RAM and a four-player cap. Check the chosen region and make a backup immediately after creating the world. If the group regularly reaches the cap or the server needs more memory, Rock is the next listed step.

Five to six players

Gravel Host’s Rock plan lists 4 GB and six players. It avoids paying for eight slots that you may never use while providing more memory than Stick. Compare its final total with any eight-player plan only after currency conversion and taxes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seven to eight players

There are two materially different listings: Gravel Host’s Crossbow offers 6 GB for up to eight players, while Shockbyte’s Survivor lists 4 GB for eight players at a price in pounds. Compare region, support, backup recovery and checkout total rather than declaring one cheaper from the headline figures.

More than eight players

Shockbyte’s Cannibal and Mutant tiers are the only published options in this set with substantially higher listed caps: 24 and 36 or more players respectively. Confirm that the game version, configuration and support terms meet your needs before committing to a larger plan.

Rank #4
Renegade Game Studios Fox in the Forest Duet 2 Player Card Game

  • Perfect Two-Player Game: Designed specifically for 2 players aged 10 and up with 30-minute gameplay, making it ideal for couples, parents with kids, or anyone seeking meaningful one-on-one connection
  • Portable Travel Card Game: Compact design fits easily in bags, backpacks, or carry-on luggage, bringing engaging entertainment to vacations, road trips, or gatherings without bulky components
  • Beautiful Hand-Illustrated Cards: Featuring stunning artwork inspired by forest themes with quality card stock that holds up to repeated play while looking attractive displayed or stored
  • Easy to Learn, Challenging to Master: Familiar trick-taking foundation makes it instantly approachable for newcomers while unique powers and strategic decision-making keep every game fresh and engaging

Backups, files and moving your world

World preservation should be a purchase requirement, not an afterthought. Ask these questions before launch:

  • Does “daily” mean one rolling copy or multiple restore points?
  • How long are backups retained, and can you download them independently?
  • Can you trigger a manual backup before changing settings?
  • Can you restore a selected point without opening a support ticket?
  • Where is the world file stored, and what happens to it after cancellation?

Gravel Host advertises daily backups retained for more than three years. Shockbyte advertises automatic backups but the listed summary does not specify the same retention period. Treat the difference as an item to verify in the control panel or terms. Regardless of provider, keep an occasional copy on your own computer so a billing, account or provider problem cannot remove your only world.

Self-hosting: when the monthly price is not the whole cost

Running a dedicated server yourself can remove the recurring hosting bill if you already own suitable, always-on hardware and have the networking skills to maintain it. It is not automatically cheaper: electricity, hardware wear, internet service, troubleshooting time and off-site backups were not quantified in the available estimates.

A third-party guide published June 11, 2025 gives these rough targets, which are estimates rather than verified official minimums:

Best Value
AWAKENING The Red Leaf Forest + The Golden Age Hidden Object PC Game DVD-ROM
  • Beautiful Hidden Object scenes
  • Lushly detailed and unique landscapes to discover
  • Meet characters that explore the world along with you

Target group Guide’s CPU estimate Guide’s memory estimate Other stated requirements
Two players 2.4 GHz, two cores 3 GB RAM At least 10 GB disk, static IP or DynDNS, open router ports
Three or more players 3.0 GHz, four cores 4 GB RAM At least 10 GB disk, static IP or DynDNS, open router ports

The guide identifies settings such as server name, player count, game and query ports, password, autosave interval and difficulty. Installation through SteamCMD and the exact current server files can change, so confirm the instructions against the game’s current official documentation before opening ports or copying commands.

Self-hosting trade-offs

  • You gain: direct control of files, configuration and hardware, with no separate hosting subscription.
  • You take on: port forwarding, address changes, updates, firewall configuration, monitoring, backups and outage recovery.
  • You must plan for: a machine that stays on, sufficient upload bandwidth, secure administrator access and a backup stored away from the server.

Common cheap-hosting mistakes and fixes

Choosing by the lowest number alone

Symptom: The plan looks cheap but cannot support the intended player count or region. Fix: Filter plans by simultaneous players and location first, then compare final totals.

Assuming a player cap is a performance guarantee

Symptom: A plan advertises a number of slots, yet the experience is inconsistent under your configuration. Fix: Treat the cap as the provider’s listed limit, use the refund period where available, and keep a downloadable world copy.

Ignoring backup retention

Symptom: A corrupted or unwanted save cannot be recovered. Fix: Test one restore, schedule your own downloads and verify how many restore points remain available.

Forgetting currency and renewal terms

Symptom: The first payment is acceptable but renewal or exchange fees change the monthly cost. Fix: record the renewal price in your currency and set a calendar reminder before the next billing date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving the world trapped in the host’s panel

Symptom: You cannot migrate when the group changes provider. Fix: confirm full file access, locate the save directory and download a test archive before building a long-term world.

Bottom-line buying decision

For up to four players, Gravel Host’s Stick listing is the price-first starting point in this comparison. For six players, its Rock tier is the directly matched listing. For eight players, compare Gravel Host Crossbow with Shockbyte Survivor on converted checkout cost, region, backups, support and refund terms; their currencies, memory allocations and advertised features differ. Larger groups should examine Shockbyte’s higher-capacity tiers or evaluate self-hosting only after pricing electricity, hardware and maintenance honestly. No provider in the available material has an independently verified “no lag” or uptime result, so preserve the world yourself and treat every quality claim as something to validate.
