The cheapest hosting that is still good depends on how often your group plays, how many people join, how heavily you mod the game, and whether the world must stay online. For occasional sessions, TickServ’s hourly Project Zomboid service can cost €0.02 per started hour for listed 4 GB Eco tiers and €0.03 per hour for listed 8 GB Eco tiers, with automatic shutdown and €0 server-off time advertised on its page (accessed October 13, 2026). For a world that should remain available, BESTNET-GSERVER lists monthly plans at US$6.57, US$11.26 and US$19.97 in an October 2026 release. Neither provider has been independently benchmarked here, so treat prices and feature descriptions as provider claims and verify the live checkout before paying.

Choose the billing model before choosing a host

“Cheapest” is a usage question, not a single price tag. Hourly hosting is usually the better fit when four friends play a few evenings, because you pay only for hours the server is running. Monthly hosting is easier to budget when the world is expected to be available every day, including when nobody is playing.

  • Occasional group: Start with an hourly plan that can shut down when empty. Confirm that the save is preserved and restored when the server starts again.
  • Always-on or community world: Compare the monthly total, included RAM, player cap and support rather than multiplying a headline hourly price by an assumed number of hours.
  • Mod-heavy group: Budget for more RAM and possibly a dedicated CPU tier. A low price is not good value if the server cannot load your mod list reliably.
  • Existing Build 41 world: Check version controls before ordering. A provider’s default build may be newer than the build used by your save.

Published low-cost options and what their prices mean

Provider and billing Published prices Player or resource information Important qualifications
TickServ hourly €0.02/hour for listed 4 GB Eco shared-vCPU entries; €0.03/hour for listed 8 GB Eco entries; €0.06/hour for 16 GB Eco; €0.10/hour for a 32 GB Eco tier. Dedicated-CPU options start at €0.10/hour for 8 GB and reach €0.26/hour for 32 GB. RAM is selected by tier; TickServ publishes ballpark RAM guidance by player count and mod load. Billed by each started hour, no subscription advertised, VAT included on the page, automatic shutdown advertised and server-off time listed as €0. The headline says “from €0.03/h,” while the detailed table contains €0.02/hour 4 GB entries. Check the live configuration and capacity.
BESTNET-GSERVER monthly Small US$6.57; Medium US$11.26; Large US$19.97, listed as October 2026 reference prices. Maximum player limits are 4, 8 and 16 respectively. Monthly billing only; the October 2026 release says no setup fee, minimum term or cancellation fee. USD reference amounts can change with exchange rates, taxes, region and checkout details.

The figures above are not a controlled price comparison. TickServ’s hourly rates and BESTNET’s monthly rates use different resource tiers and billing rules. To compare them for your group, write down the RAM tier you actually need, estimate the number of server hours in a month, and apply the provider’s current rate. For an hourly service, the basic calculation is hourly rate × started hours; stopped hours cost nothing only where the provider’s shutdown policy applies. For a monthly service, use the complete recurring charge for the selected plan and any taxes or add-ons shown at checkout.

TickServ: the lowest published hourly entry

How its hourly pricing is presented

TickServ describes a dedicated Project Zomboid service billed by started hour with no subscription. Its live table, accessed October 13, 2026, shows €0.02/hour entries for 4 GB Eco shared-vCPU configurations and €0.03/hour for listed 8 GB Eco configurations. Higher Eco entries shown are €0.06/hour at 16 GB and €0.10/hour at 32 GB. Dedicated-CPU configurations are listed from €0.10/hour at 8 GB through €0.26/hour at 32 GB. The page says prices include VAT.

There is a presentation detail worth checking: the page headline starts at €0.03/hour, but the detailed table includes €0.02/hour 4 GB entries. That can reflect a particular location, configuration or capacity condition. Select the exact region, CPU type and RAM amount in the live order flow instead of relying on the headline.

Shutdown, saves and administration

The service advertises automatic shutdown when nobody is playing and says the server costs €0 while off. It also says saves are archived before shutdown and restored for the next session. Those claims make the service especially relevant to groups that play in scheduled sessions, but confirm how an idle timeout works and how long archives are retained if your world is important.

TickServ advertises Build 42 support, Steam Workshop mod support through Workshop IDs, and a built-in admin console. Its listed Eco locations are Germany, France, Finland, the Netherlands and Romania. Dedicated-CPU locations include Germany, France, the United Kingdom, North America East, Poland and Italy. Locations and capacity can change, so choose the region nearest most players and verify that the desired location is selectable.

How much RAM your Project Zomboid group should plan for

TickServ labels the following figures as ballpark guidance surveyed in September 2026. They are a starting point, not an independent performance guarantee or a promise that a plan’s maximum player number will feel smooth.

Group and workload TickServ planning figure How to use it
Up to 6 players, no mods 8 GB Reasonable starting tier for a small, lightly loaded group.
Up to 32 players, no mods 16 GB Use only if the provider’s CPU, connection and plan limits also suit the group.
Up to 32 players, a few mods 16 GB Leave room for growth and monitor the server after adding Workshop content.
Up to 6 players, heavy mods 16 GB Heavy mod collections can need more memory even with few players.
Up to 32 players, heavy mods 32 GB A high-memory starting point; CPU and mod compatibility still matter.

TickServ’s FAQ summarizes 8 GB for a small two-to-six-player group and 16 GB for larger groups or many mods. Treat both descriptions as estimates from the provider. If your group is near a tier boundary, the safer choice is usually the next RAM level rather than assuming the advertised player count is a comfort guarantee.

BESTNET-GSERVER: predictable monthly billing

Plans and limits

Plan October 2026 reference price Maximum players listed by the provider Best considered for
Small US$6.57 per month 4 A small group that wants a continuously available world.
Medium US$11.26 per month 8 A larger friend group or a little headroom beyond four players.
Large US$19.97 per month 16 A group approaching 16 concurrent players, subject to real workload.

BESTNET LLC’s October 9, 2026 release says the service uses monthly billing only, with no setup fee, minimum term or cancellation fee. Ports are normally assigned automatically. The prices are USD reference amounts and may move with exchange rates; confirm the currency, taxes, region and final plan details in the order panel.

Build 41 and Build 42 compatibility

The service defaults to stable Build 42 and allows Build 41 to be selected in its panel. BESTNET states that a Build 42 world cannot be opened in Build 41. Returning to Build 41 requires starting a new world, selecting the corresponding version and having every player use that same version. Before migrating an existing save, make a separate copy and verify the build setting with the host and each player’s game client.

BESTNET-GSERVER is not an official partner of The Indie Stone. A hosting listing or a version option should not be interpreted as developer endorsement.

Build and mod checks that prevent expensive mistakes

  • Match the game build: Record whether your existing world is Build 41 or Build 42. Confirm that the host supports that build before uploading or generating a world.
  • Check Workshop handling: Determine whether mods are added by Workshop IDs, a panel list or manual files. TickServ advertises Workshop-ID entry; confirm the exact process for your collection.
  • Confirm save behavior: Ask how often saves are archived, how restoration works after shutdown and whether you can download a copy.
  • Separate player caps from comfort: A listed maximum is an administrative limit, not a guarantee of smooth simulation with vehicles, large bases or heavy mods.
  • Check CPU class: If your group has frequent simulation slowdowns, compare dedicated-CPU options rather than adding RAM alone.

A practical buying process

  1. Inventory your group. Count the highest likely concurrent players, not only the usual number. Write down your current build and every planned mod.
  2. Estimate real uptime. For scheduled sessions, estimate started hours per month. For an always-available world, treat monthly billing as the baseline and include any period when players may join unexpectedly.
  3. Select a RAM starting point. Use the provider’s estimate as a planning guide: 8 GB for a small unmodded group, 16 GB for more players or substantial mods, and 32 GB for a large heavy-mod workload.
  4. Choose a nearby location. Put the server near the majority of players. If the group is split across continents, decide whether one region’s latency is acceptable before paying.
  5. Verify the build in the control panel. Do this before importing a save. A mismatch can force a new world, particularly when moving between Build 42 and Build 41.
  6. Confirm the complete price. Check whether the displayed amount is hourly or monthly, whether VAT or taxes are included, and whether stronger CPU, storage, backups or a special IP add cost.
  7. Test with a disposable world first. Connect every player, load the planned mods and run the activities that normally stress your world. Only then upload or designate the long-term save.
  8. Document recovery. Keep a local copy of the save, the mod list and the selected build. Record administrator credentials and the steps required to restore the world.

Self-hosting: the no-rental alternative

Self-hosting can be the cheapest option if you already have a suitable computer, a reliable connection and the time to maintain it. It is not maintenance-free: you must install the server, configure it, keep the game and mods aligned, protect the save and handle network or hardware failures.

ForgeWorld Gaming documents installation through Steam tools or SteamCMD and describes the configuration work required after installation. TechRadar gives a rough secondary-source baseline of a quad-core 2.5 GHz CPU, 8 GB of RAM and a 20 GB SSD. Those figures are editorial guidance, not developer-certified Project Zomboid server minimums, and they do not guarantee performance for a particular player count or mod list.

  • Use a machine that can remain online during play without competing workloads.
  • Plan regular save copies and a way to restore them after a failed update or corrupted configuration.
  • Keep the server build, player clients and Workshop mods synchronized.
  • Expect to manage updates, firewall or port settings and troubleshooting yourself.

Self-hosting makes most sense for technically comfortable players who already own the hardware. If purchasing a computer solely for this purpose, include electricity, storage, replacement risk and your own setup time in the cost comparison.

Common failure points and fixes

The server costs more than expected

Hourly services bill by started hour, so repeated short launches can create more billable hours than expected. Check the idle-shutdown behavior and the exact selected tier. Monthly services can also change when exchange rates, taxes or optional resources are applied. Compare the final checkout total, not only the advertised starting figure.

Players cannot join after an update

Check that every client and the server use the same Build 41 or Build 42 version. Do not attempt to open a Build 42 world in Build 41 on the assumption that the save will downgrade safely; BESTNET explicitly warns that this is not supported and says returning to Build 41 requires a new world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The world loads but feels slow

Review the workload rather than immediately blaming RAM. Count concurrent players, disable or update recently added mods, and compare your selected tier with the provider’s RAM guidance. If the tier is already appropriate, investigate whether a dedicated CPU option or a nearer region is available. The published material does not establish independent latency or performance results for either provider.

A modded save is missing content

Compare the server’s Workshop-ID list with each player’s collection and confirm that the selected build supports the mod versions. Keep a written mod list and a backup from before major changes so you can roll back without losing the entire world.

Verdict: the cheapest option that remains sensible

For a two-to-six-player group that plays in sessions, TickServ’s advertised €0.02/hour 4 GB Eco entries are the lowest published starting point in this comparison, and its automatic shutdown and €0 off-time policy fit intermittent use. Choose a larger or dedicated-CPU tier if your mod load, player count or simulation demands exceed the 8 GB starting guidance.

For a world that should be available continuously, BESTNET-GSERVER’s US$6.57, US$11.26 and US$19.97 monthly reference tiers offer simpler budgeting, with listed caps of 4, 8 and 16 players. Confirm the current exchange-adjusted checkout price and Build 41/42 behavior before migrating a save.

In either case, “still good” means adequate resources, a compatible build, manageable mod installation, recoverable saves, a suitable region and support you can use—not merely the smallest number on a pricing page.
