For a US buyer who wants managed hosting, the lowest verified price is Nitrado’s 20-slot tier at $24.99 for 30 days. It includes crossplay and CurseForge mod management, but new services purchased after June 22, 2026, at 2 PM CEST cannot run Astraeos or Lost Colony on that tier. If you need every map, Nitrado’s 26-slot plan at $32.29 for 30 days is the safer low-cost choice.
A self-managed Windows VPS can offer more control and hardware for the money, but it is a different product: GTX Gaming lists a Ryzen 9 VPS at £69 per month, and you must install and administer the ARK server yourself. There is no universal global winner because the prices use different currencies, regions, billing terms and service models.

What the cheapest “good” ARK server actually needs
Price alone does not tell you whether an ARK: Survival Ascended server will work for your group. A useful comparison starts with the map, player cap, client platforms, mod support, administration effort and data-center location.

The $24.99 plan is the cheapest verified managed price in the US listing, but it is only the right bargain if your group does not need either excluded map. Nitrado’s FAQ says that “Only Astraeos and Lost Colony require a minimum of 26 slots to provide enough headroom for those demands plus the usual server overhead, mods, and full player counts.” That is Nitrado’s own explanation, not an independent performance test.
The $87.19 figure covers 90 days, so it should not be presented as an equivalent one-month price. Compare it only when you are comfortable with the longer prepaid commitment. All three prices are listings rather than independently audited checkout totals.
Who should choose the $24.99 tier?
Choose the entry tier when the group has no need for Astraeos or Lost Colony, expects no more than 20 simultaneous players, and values a control panel over server-level access. It is especially practical for a private server where one person wants to configure maps and mods without installing Windows tools or maintaining a dedicated machine.

When the $32.29 tier is the better value
The 26-slot plan costs more for 30 days but removes the stated map restriction and raises the listed capacity to 26 players. It is the straightforward choice for a group that may switch maps, wants Astraeos or Lost Colony, or wants additional headroom for a full player list and mod overhead. The higher slot count still does not guarantee smooth operation under every workload.
Self-managed alternative: GTX Gaming infrastructure
GTX Gaming lists a Ryzen 9 VPS for £69 per month. The listing specifies eight assigned cores, 32GB of DDR5 memory, 200GB of NVMe storage and Windows Server included. Locations shown include London, Frankfurt and New York. This is infrastructure hosting rather than a turnkey ARK subscription.
With the VPS, you receive full administrator access and Remote Desktop, then install the ASA dedicated server yourself through SteamCMD. You select the map, configure settings, install and update mods, monitor the process and recover from configuration mistakes. The lower monthly price in one currency does not make it directly cheaper than Nitrado’s dollar plans because the services include different labor and support responsibilities.
GTX describes its VPS as appropriate for one map or a small two-map cluster. It recommends a whole dedicated machine for three or more maps, heavy mod collections or busy public servers. GTX lists dedicated servers from £99 per month; Windows Server is a monthly add-on for those machines. These are provider recommendations, not independent benchmarks.

When a VPS makes sense
- You are comfortable using Remote Desktop and Windows administration.
- You want control over files, launch parameters, scheduled restarts and mod installation.
- Your plan is one map or a modest two-map cluster.
- You can spend time handling game updates, backups, firewall rules and recovery.
When to step up to dedicated hardware
Consider the dedicated option when you operate several maps, run a heavy mod set, host a busy public community or need resources isolated from other virtual workloads. The £99 starting price excludes the Windows Server add-on, so calculate the complete recurring total before comparing it with managed plans.

How to choose the cheapest option for your group
- List the required maps. If Astraeos or Lost Colony is required and the Nitrado service would be purchased after June 22, 2026, 2 PM CEST, budget for the 26-slot tier rather than the $24.99 tier.
- Count likely simultaneous players. Use your expected peak, not the total number of community members. Nitrado’s listed choices are 20 and 26 slots; do not treat either figure as a performance guarantee.
- Inventory client platforms. Nitrado’s FAQ identifies PC Steam, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5 and Windows Microsoft Store clients. Confirm that your particular combination and desired mods support crossplay before paying.
- Decide who will administer the server. If nobody wants to install software and maintain Windows, a managed panel is usually worth the difference. If one person already manages game servers, the VPS can provide more control.
- Pick the nearest practical region. Compare the provider’s displayed locations and ping-test results from the players’ actual areas. Treat those numbers as guidance, not an independent latency study.
- Price the complete term. Include taxes, currency conversion, any location or configuration fee, the billing period and, for dedicated GTX hardware, the Windows Server add-on.
Setting up a managed Nitrado server
The managed route avoids operating-system installation, but you still need a disciplined configuration process.
- Choose the 20-slot or 26-slot plan after checking the map rule and your expected peak population.
- Select a region close to the majority of players and review the listed platform and crossplay options.
- Open the control panel and set the map, difficulty, rates, passwords and administrator permissions.
- Use the listed CurseForge integration to add mods, then verify that every mod supports the target map and crossplay client mix.

Nitrado advertises daily backups, DDoS protection, server-access sharing, flexible runtime and plan upgrades or downgrades. These are listed service features, not proof of measured uptime, support response or in-game performance.
Setting up the GTX self-managed route
- Choose the VPS location closest to the player base and confirm the complete monthly price for the selected configuration.
- Connect to the supplied Windows Server instance through Remote Desktop using an administrator account.
- Install the ARK: Survival Ascended dedicated server with SteamCMD, following the current game-server files and update process.
- Configure the map, server name, ports, player limit, passwords, administration and save locations.
- Add mods one at a time or in small groups, restarting and checking logs after each change so a faulty mod is easy to identify.
- Create a repeatable update and backup routine. Keep copies of configuration files and saved worlds outside the live installation.
- Test joining from every intended platform before inviting the whole community, then monitor CPU, memory, storage and network use during peak play.
GTX states that its VPS includes full administrator access and Remote Desktop. That flexibility also means you are responsible for Windows security, firewall configuration, account protection and recovery when an update or mod breaks startup.

- Currency: $24.99 and £69 are not directly comparable without the exchange rate and any card or conversion fee.
- Tax and checkout charges: Provider-listed prices may not include every regional tax or fee.
- Billing term: A 30-day plan and a 90-day prepaid price represent different commitments.
- Map and slot requirements: Selecting the cheapest tier and discovering later that a required map needs 26 slots creates an avoidable upgrade.
- Administration time: A VPS may look inexpensive until you account for installation, updates, backups and troubleshooting time.
- Growth: A private 20-player server can become a larger community. Check upgrade paths before moving worlds or rebuilding configurations.
Performance expectations and evidence limits
No independent uptime, latency or gameplay-performance comparison establishes that one listed provider is faster or more stable than the other. Prices and advertised specifications are not benchmarks. Actual results depend on map, mod count, save size, player activity, region, network route and update state.
Use the published specifications to make a shortlist, then validate the choice with a short test period. Watch for connection failures, rubber-banding, crashes during saves, mod download errors and resource saturation at the busiest time your group can reproduce. If a provider offers a ping test, run it from several players’ locations rather than relying on one measurement.
Common problems and practical fixes
The map you want is unavailable
Check the Nitrado purchase date rule and slot tier first. Astraeos and Lost Colony require the listed 26-slot configuration for qualifying new purchases. If you are on the 20-slot tier, upgrade rather than trying to force an unsupported map.

Confirm the client edition, console or store platform, crossplay setting, password and game version. Disable recently added mods temporarily to identify compatibility problems, then reintroduce them one at a time.

The server starts but performance degrades
Compare the active player count and mod load with the plan or hardware choice. Reduce unnecessary mods, test a lighter configuration and inspect resource usage. A 20- or 26-slot label does not guarantee smooth performance at full load.
A VPS installation will not update or launch
Use Remote Desktop to review the SteamCMD update result, available NVMe space, Windows permissions, firewall rules and the server’s configuration files. Keep a known-good backup so you can roll back a faulty update or mod.

- Map requirement confirmed, including the Astraeos/Lost Colony 26-slot rule.
- Peak simultaneous players estimated realistically.
- Every intended platform and mod checked for crossplay compatibility.
- Region selected near the player majority.
- Full price calculated with tax, currency, term and add-ons.

For the simplest low-cost purchase, Nitrado’s $24.99-for-30-days US listing is the cheapest verified managed tier, provided your group can use the 20-slot map selection and does not need Astraeos or Lost Colony. For all-map access, the $32.29 26-slot tier is the more dependable budget recommendation. GTX’s £69 VPS can be attractive to technically capable administrators who want Windows-level control and substantial resources, but it is not a plug-and-play game-server plan. Choose it only after valuing your own setup and maintenance time. Recheck every provider’s current checkout prices, taxes, regions, map rules and features before ordering.
