Cheap smartphones are under real pressure in 2026, but they are not all disappearing—and Apple has not abandoned buyers looking for a lower-priced iPhone. The sharpest squeeze is at the very bottom of the market, especially Android phones priced below $100. Apple’s iPhone 17e is its current entry model, but it sits well above that tier: Apple’s US store lists it from $699, while its March 2026 launch announcement gave a $599 price for the 256GB model.
Are cheap smartphones actually dead?
No—not across the board. IDC’s August 26, 2026 forecast points to a severe downturn, not the disappearance of every affordable phone. IDC expects worldwide smartphone shipments to fall 16.7% in 2026 to just over one billion units. At the same time, it projects the average selling price to reach $581, up 27.6%, and the total market value to grow 6.3% to $613 billion. These are forecasts for the full year, not final results.
The sharpest impact is at the bottom end. IDC reported that the sub-$100 smartphone segment fell nearly 60% year over year in Q2 2026. That quarterly segment figure is distinct from IDC’s full-year shipment forecast. IDC attributes the worsening outlook to memory-cost pressure and says the lowest-priced phones are particularly exposed.
IDC Vice President Francisco Jeronimo put the shift bluntly: “The era of the cheap smartphone has ended.” In context, the claim describes pressure on the cheapest tier and rising prices, not the end of every lower-cost choice. Jeronimo added that vendors with enough scale and supply leverage may be better able to keep demand at higher prices. IDC’s forecast is a market outlook, so actual full-year shipments and prices may differ.

Where does Apple’s cheapest current iPhone sit?
Apple identifies iPhone 17e as the most affordable model in the iPhone 17 family. That makes it Apple’s entry point, not a sub-$100 or broadly low-cost phone. Its price is also a US-specific reference and should not be applied to other countries.
| Price reference | What Apple listed | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| March 2, 2026 launch announcement | $599 in the US for the 256GB iPhone 17e | Announced launch price; not the current storefront price. |
| Apple US store at the time of reporting | Starting at $699 | Current buying reference in the US at that time; check Apple’s store for the price in your region before buying. |
The difference matters: the launch announcement is not a reliable substitute for the current listed price. Apple’s product announcement called the phone an “exceptional value” and a compelling option for people upgrading to the iPhone 17 family. That is Apple’s positioning, not an independent assessment of value. Apple’s announcement contains the launch details; its US storefront shows the current listed starting price.
Does Apple’s business show that it doesn’t care about price-conscious buyers?
It does not establish that. Apple’s strategy is not to compete for the very cheapest phones: its least expensive current iPhone remains far above the sub-$100 segment. But the existence of an entry model shows that Apple still offers a lower-priced route into its current iPhone family, even if “affordable” in Apple’s lineup means something different from affordable across the whole smartphone market.
Apple reported that iPhone net sales rose 22% year over year to $54.252 billion for the quarter ended June 27, 2026. In its Q3 2026 Form 10-Q, Apple said the increase was primarily due to higher net sales of Pro models. That points to strong results and the importance of premium models in the product mix; it does not reveal Apple’s private motives or show that the company ignores buyers with tighter budgets. Apple’s filing with the SEC reports the results and attributes the increase.

Apple’s April 2026 results release also said iPhone had a March-quarter revenue record, driven by demand for the iPhone 17 lineup, and identified iPhone 17e as a lineup addition. Strong sales do not, by themselves, settle whether a particular model is good value for a particular buyer.
What should you compare before buying?
“Cheap” can mean the lowest upfront price, a good phone for the money, or a lower total cost over several years. Compare offers on the same basis rather than relying on a brand’s entry-level label.

- Upfront price and storage: Compare the actual price for the storage capacity you need. A headline starting price may refer to a different configuration or an earlier price announcement.
- Total cost: Include carrier financing, required plan costs, trade-in conditions and any amount due later. A lower monthly payment does not necessarily mean a lower overall price.
- Software support: Check the maker’s stated update commitment for the exact model. The sources cited here do not establish directly comparable update policies for current Android phones.
- Repairability and parts: Consider whether parts and repair services are accessible where you live, and what repairs may cost.
- Battery and camera: Prioritize the capabilities you will use. Paying more for features that do not matter to you may not improve your day-to-day experience.
- Operating system: Include the cost and inconvenience of switching platforms, apps and accessories if you already use a different ecosystem.
These factors can make an older, refurbished or used phone worth considering when a new entry model is still beyond your budget. The evidence here does not establish current Android model prices, update policies or specific refurbished offers, so check those details directly for the phones available in your market.
What the evidence says about Apple’s “affordable” tier
Apple has changed its entry-level iPhone approach over time. In February 2025, the Associated Press discussed the iPhone 16e as a replacement for the SE line and described the business tension: a lower-end product can attract customers to an ecosystem, but it can also compete with more expensive models. Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee told AP, “The problem with a lower-end product in a luxury portfolio is that you want it to be good but not so good as to cannibalize the crown jewels.” That is useful historical context, not a description of the current iPhone 17e’s price or a statement of Apple’s intent. The AP’s iPhone 16e coverage concerns the earlier model.
