There isn’t enough consistent, current evidence to name five verified winners or rank them fairly. This shortlist covers three documented options—a wireless pair, a second wireless contender, and a wired USB-C model—and explains what to verify before buying. How to choose an inexpensive on-ear headphone
On-ear headphones rest on the outer ear. Fit and pressure are personal, so product descriptions alone cannot establish whether a pair will stay comfortable during long listening sessions.
- Choose the connection first. Wireless models avoid a headphone cable but need charging and Bluetooth pairing. Wired models do not need Bluetooth or battery charging, but require a compatible audio port.
- Check compatibility. For USB-C headphones, confirm that your phone, tablet, or computer supports USB-C audio. A USB-C charging port does not by itself establish compatibility.
- Compare practical features. Look at fit, controls, microphone, portability, and battery life where applicable. Bluetooth version alone does not tell you how a headphone sounds.
- Check noise cancellation by exact model. Passive isolation from a headphone’s construction is not the same as active noise cancellation (ANC).
- Check the current local price. “Cheap” depends on market and date; reference prices and manufacturer listings can change.
Documented options to consider

Why the Sony MDR-ZX110 needs a fit check
Sony’s US product page describes the MDR-ZX110 as wired and on-ear, and displayed $9.99 when consulted. That is a time-sensitive manufacturer-page listing, not a current market-wide price survey. The available product information supports a direct wireless comparison between the Sony WH-CH520 and JBL Tune 520BT, plus specifications for the wired JBL Tune 520C.
