DigitalOcean’s $4-per-month Basic Droplet is the lowest officially listed entry plan in this comparison, but its 512 MiB of RAM is a tight starting point for Docker. The $6-per-month Basic Droplet, with 1 GiB of RAM and 25 GiB of storage, is the more realistic minimum for a small container host. Among lower-confidence third-party listings, Contabo offers the most memory per dollar on paper, while Hetzner remains inexpensive after 2026 price increases but is no longer priced like older guides claim.

Your real cost depends on more than the advertised VPS rate. Backups, IPv4 availability, transfer allowances, storage performance, billing minimums and support can change which plan is cheapest for your workload.

Quick verdict: which cheap VPS is best for Docker in 2026?

Choose the provider by the constraint that matters most rather than by headline price. DigitalOcean has the clearest officially confirmed pricing and documentation-oriented ecosystem. Contabo has the highest reported RAM allocation per dollar, but the figures are third-party and come with reported disk-speed and support compromises. Hetzner’s shared plans offer strong value in the European market, although 2026 increases make old price comparisons unreliable. Linode’s reported entry plan is close to DigitalOcean’s practical floor. Vultr can be cheapest if an IPv6-only server works for you.

Provider and plan Reported monthly price Reported resources Evidence and important qualification
DigitalOcean Basic Droplet $4 1 vCPU, 512 MiB RAM, 10 GiB SSD, 500 GiB transfer Official pricing; the memory is a very constrained Docker starting point.
DigitalOcean Basic Droplet $6 1 vCPU, 1 GiB RAM, 25 GiB storage Official pricing; the practical low-cost starting tier for a small Docker host.
Linode (Akamai) Nanode About $5 1 shared CPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB storage, 1 TB transfer Third-party figure with low confidence; verify the current regional price.
Vultr entry instance $2.50 IPv6-only or $3.50 with IPv4 Resources not consistently stated in the available comparison Third-party figures conflict; verify both the plan specification and address type.
Contabo entry VPS About €4.50 or $4.95 Reported 8 GB RAM and 3 vCPU Third-party figure with low confidence; reported trade-offs include slower disk and weaker support.
Hetzner Cloud CX23 (EU) €5.99 (about $7.09 in the cited reading) Plan resources should be checked on the current regional page Third-party price reading with low confidence; 2026 increases make older prices obsolete.
Hetzner Cloud CAX11 (EU) €6.49 (about $7.59 in the cited reading) Plan resources should be checked on the current regional page Third-party price reading with low confidence; availability and architecture can vary by location.

The only prices officially confirmed in the material for this article are DigitalOcean’s $4 and $6 Basic Droplets and its cited dedicated-CPU snippet. Treat every other number as a planning indication, not a quote. Check the provider’s checkout page for tax, region, IPv4 and current-plan changes before ordering.

What a Docker VPS must provide

Memory is usually the first limit

Docker itself is a lightweight container runtime, but the applications inside containers are not uniformly lightweight. Databases, language runtimes, build tools, monitoring agents and reverse proxies all compete for RAM. No sourced sizing standard establishes that 512 MiB or 1 GiB is sufficient for a particular Docker workload, so use those figures as capacity to test rather than a guarantee.

A 512 MiB server may be suitable for an extremely small, single-process experiment, but it leaves little room for the operating system, Docker daemon, image extraction and temporary build files. The 1 GiB tier gives more headroom for a simple service, although you should still measure memory under peak traffic and during deployments.

CPU affects builds and bursts

Shared-vCPU plans can run containers economically, but CPU time is shared with other tenants and performance can vary. A single vCPU is adequate for many low-traffic services that spend most of their time waiting on network or storage operations. Compilation, image builds, compression and CPU-heavy application code need more predictable compute. DigitalOcean’s cited dedicated-CPU option starts at $42 per month for 4 GiB RAM and 2 vCPUs; the source confidence for that snippet is lower than its Basic Droplet pricing, so verify it before budgeting.

Storage is both capacity and latency

Container images, writable layers, logs and databases consume disk. The $4 DigitalOcean plan lists 10 GiB of SSD, while the $6 plan lists 25 GiB. A small image can be hundreds of megabytes, and repeated image versions or unrotated logs can fill a small volume unexpectedly. Reported Contabo value comes with slower-disk warnings, which can matter more than raw capacity for database-heavy containers.

Networking and addresses

Included transfer differs by plan. The reported Linode Nanode includes 1 TB, while the $4 DigitalOcean plan lists 500 GiB. Vultr’s reported $2.50 option is IPv6-only; the reported $3.50 option includes IPv4. If your users, webhook senders or management tools require IPv4, an IPv6-only plan may not be a functional bargain. Confirm whether an address is included, charged separately or available only in selected locations.

Provider-by-provider analysis

DigitalOcean: clearest official low-end choice

DigitalOcean’s Basic Droplet at $4 per month is the lowest officially listed entry price in the supplied comparison. It includes 512 MiB RAM, one vCPU, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB transfer. That combination is attractive for a disposable test server, a tiny personal service or a learning environment, but the memory ceiling is the main risk for Docker.

The $6 Basic Droplet raises memory to 1 GiB and storage to 25 GiB while retaining one vCPU. For a first production-like experiment, this is the more defensible baseline because it provides additional room for the operating system, image layers and a small amount of application overhead. It is still not a promise that any specific stack will fit; profile your containers before committing.

DigitalOcean’s billing is per second with a 60-second minimum. Weekly backups cost 20% of the Droplet price, and daily backups cost 30%, according to the official pricing details supplied for this article. A $6 Droplet with daily backups therefore has a stated backup add-on of $1.80 per month before taxes or other services, while the exact invoice depends on the provider’s billing rules and runtime.

The platform is positioned around documentation and ecosystem quality in the supplied material. That is an opinion rather than a measured benchmark, but it can reduce setup time when you are learning Docker or troubleshooting networking. Linode’s object storage, backups and NodeBalancers are separately charged, so do not compare only the base VPS rate if you need those services.

Linode (Akamai): similar practical floor

Third-party comparisons report a Nanode at about $5 per month with 1 GB RAM, one shared CPU, 25 GB storage and 1 TB transfer. The figure is low confidence and should be checked against the current regional pricing page. If those specifications are still available, the plan is close to the $6 DigitalOcean tier on memory and storage while reporting a larger transfer allowance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linode charges separately for backups, object storage and NodeBalancers. Add the services you actually need before deciding that its base price is lower. A simple one-container service may need none of them; a multi-service deployment with external backups and load balancing will have a different monthly total.

Vultr: potentially the lowest sticker price, with an IPv6 decision

Third-party sources in the supplied comparison disagree on Vultr’s entry price, reporting $2.50 per month for an IPv6-only instance and $3.50 per month when IPv4 is included. Because the figures conflict and the available material does not establish a complete resource specification, verify the plan in the exact location you intend to use.

IPv6-only hosting can work when every client, dependency and administrative tool supports IPv6. It is a poor fit when you need compatibility with IPv4-only users or services. Treat the address type as a requirements check, not an optional detail.

Contabo: most RAM per dollar on paper

Third-party reporting puts a Contabo entry VPS near €4.50 or $4.95 per month with 8 GB RAM and 3 vCPUs. This is the strongest memory-per-dollar claim in the comparison, but it has low confidence and must be verified on the current official page. Reports also describe slower disk performance and weaker support, so the apparent saving may not suit latency-sensitive databases, frequent image builds or teams that need rapid provider assistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic backups are reported at $1.85 per month. Confirm whether that add-on, retention policy and restore process match your needs. A large RAM allocation does not compensate for inadequate backups or slow storage when the application is I/O-bound.

Hetzner: still value-oriented, but 2026 prices changed the calculation

Hetzner raised cloud and server prices in 2026, with reported adjustments in April and June. A third-party price reading lists the EU CX23 at €5.99 (about $7.09) and the CAX11 at €6.49 (about $7.59). These figures are low confidence and should be verified for your location, currency and architecture.

Older guides that quote a CX22 near €3.79 are out of date. Reviewers continue to describe Hetzner as strong value for self-hosting, but that assessment predates or is weakened by the increases. Dedicated-vCPU plans reportedly rose the most; a budget Docker host should examine shared plans first and only pay for dedicated CPU when workload consistency justifies it.

Calculate the real monthly cost

Use a line-item budget rather than comparing headline VPS prices. For each candidate, record the base instance, backup plan, address charges, storage additions, transfer overage policy and any managed service.

  • Base VPS: record the price for the exact region, architecture and billing period.
  • Backups: DigitalOcean lists 20% for weekly and 30% for daily backups. Linode lists backups as a separate charge in the supplied material. Contabo automatic backups are reported at $1.85 per month. Backup prices for other providers were not established here.
  • IPv4: check whether it is included. A low-priced IPv6-only server can require redesign or a separate gateway.
  • Storage: include extra block volumes if images, logs or databases exceed the boot disk.
  • Transfer: compare included transfer with your actual outbound traffic and verify overage pricing.
  • Billing behavior: DigitalOcean bills by the second with a 60-second minimum, which matters for short-lived test instances but does not eliminate monthly capacity costs for continuously running servers.

For example, the official $6 DigitalOcean tier plus its stated 30% daily-backup add-on is $7.80 before taxes when run for a full month. That arithmetic describes the listed rates only; it is not a universal invoice because taxes, region and additional services can differ.

Match the VPS to the workload

Learning, demos and disposable experiments

Start with the lowest plan that can boot your operating system and image. The $4 DigitalOcean tier is the cheapest officially listed option, but monitor memory and disk immediately. Avoid storing irreplaceable data on a tiny experimental server, and destroy idle resources when you finish; billing may continue while an instance exists.

A small personal service

The $6 DigitalOcean tier or a verified 1 GB alternative is a more sensible starting point than 512 MiB. Run one primary service, keep logs bounded, and place persistent data on a tested backup path. If the application regularly swaps, restarts or fails during image updates, move up before adding features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several containers or a database

Compare plans at the same RAM level rather than choosing the lowest absolute price. Contabo’s reported 8 GB offer may provide considerable headroom, but investigate disk behavior and support expectations. A provider with less RAM but faster, more predictable storage may deliver a better database experience.

Public production traffic

Price stability, restore capability and predictable performance matter more than the lowest sticker price. Include daily backups where the data justifies them, test a restore, and verify transfer and address requirements. Consider dedicated CPU only when measurements show shared CPU contention is affecting response time.

Deployment checklist for a low-cost Docker VPS

  1. Define the workload: list containers, persistent data, expected traffic, build frequency, required ports and whether clients need IPv4.
  2. Choose a region and architecture: confirm that the selected plan is available where your users and dependencies require it. Check whether an ARM option changes image compatibility or price.
  3. Create the smallest test instance: use a disposable environment first. Record RAM, CPU, disk and network behavior during startup, normal traffic and deployment.
  4. Install a supported Linux distribution and Docker: use the provider’s current image and Docker’s current installation instructions for that distribution. Do not copy an old repository command without checking its signing-key and package requirements.
  5. Run containers with explicit limits: set restart behavior, exposed ports, environment variables and memory or CPU limits appropriate to the application. Keep secrets out of public image layers.
  6. Persist only what must survive replacement: map database and upload directories to volumes or an external storage target. Treat a container’s writable layer as replaceable.
  7. Configure log rotation: unbounded container logs can consume a 10 GiB or 25 GiB boot disk even when the application itself is small.
  8. Enable a backup schedule: select weekly or daily coverage according to the data-loss window, then perform a restore test on a separate instance.
  9. Harden access: use key-based administration, remove unused services, restrict firewall ports and keep the operating system and images updated.
  10. Measure before resizing: observe memory pressure, swap activity, CPU saturation, disk latency, disk fullness and outbound transfer during the busiest expected period.

Common failure modes and fixes

The server runs out of memory during deployment

Image extraction and application startup can require more memory than steady-state operation. Remove unused images, build elsewhere, limit concurrent services and upgrade from 512 MiB to 1 GiB or more. Do not interpret a successful idle boot as proof that deployments will fit.

Disk fills even though the application is small

Inspect image layers, stopped containers, package caches and logs. Add rotation, remove unused artifacts and move persistent data to an appropriately sized volume. A 10 GiB disk leaves little room for repeated releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Users cannot connect

Check the server’s address family, DNS records, firewall rules, listening interface and published container ports. If the VPS is IPv6-only, confirm that clients and upstream services can reach IPv6 before treating the problem as a Docker configuration error.

Backups exist but recovery fails

A backup charge is not evidence of a tested restore. Restore to a new instance, verify database consistency and document the steps while the original server is still available.

The cheap plan feels slow

Separate CPU contention, disk latency, memory pressure and network limits with monitoring. Contabo’s reported disk trade-off is a reminder that abundant RAM cannot fix an I/O bottleneck. If shared CPU is the problem, compare a larger shared plan with a dedicated-CPU option and choose from measurements.

A practical buying checklist

  • Is the displayed price official and current for your region?
  • Does the plan include enough RAM for the operating system, Docker, images and peak application use?
  • How much SSD storage remains after the base image, logs and update headroom?
  • Is IPv4 included, and do all required clients support IPv6 if it is not?
  • What transfer allowance is included, and what happens at the limit?
  • Are backups extra, and can you restore them to a replacement VPS?
  • Is storage performance suitable for your database or build workload?
  • Do you need managed support, load balancing or object storage that changes the total?
  • Can you destroy and recreate the server without losing persistent data?
  • Have you checked 2026 pricing rather than relying on an older comparison?

Bottom line

For the lowest officially confirmed price, DigitalOcean’s $4 Basic Droplet wins, but the 512 MiB memory limit makes the $6, 1 GiB tier the more credible minimum for a small Docker host. Contabo is the paper leader for RAM per dollar if its third-party price and specification are still available, provided slower storage and support limitations are acceptable. Hetzner remains worth checking for European self-hosting, but 2026 increases invalidate older bargain pricing. Linode and Vultr can be competitive after you verify current plans, transfer and IPv4 costs. The cheapest VPS is the one that still meets your memory, storage, address and recovery requirements after every extra charge is included.
