The cheapest Discord bot hosting is not automatically the best value. You can spend $0 by using a computer you already own or an always-free cloud allowance, choose a managed free tier, or pay roughly $2–$4 per month for a small managed plan or VPS. The right choice depends on whether the service sleeps, how often free plans must be renewed, what happens to files after a restart, and whether you can administer Linux and security yourself.
For a bot that must stay connected around the clock, verify four things before deploying: always-on terms, persistent storage, automatic crash recovery, and acceptable-use rules. The headline price is only one part of the cost; your time spent patching, monitoring and recovering the service matters too.
Our top pick: Antihost
If you want a server that never sleeps and does not need a renewal every few days, our top pick is an Antihost VPS. It is a self-managed Linux VPS on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage and full root access, from 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB RAM, in the USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine. It comes with unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port, L3/L4 DDoS protection and a 14-day free trial, so you can test your bot before you commit; see the current plans for what fits your budget.

Discord bots maintain a persistent gateway connection. A host that pauses an application after inactivity, reclaims an idle virtual machine or requires a manual renewal can disconnect the bot even when its advertised price is zero. Some app-platform free plans only wake when they receive web traffic, which does not help a bot that primarily communicates through Discord’s WebSocket connection.

There are four practical ways to run a bot:
- Managed bot hosting: A control panel handles much of the runtime, files, secrets and process supervision. It is usually the least work.
- Always-free cloud virtual machine: The monthly bill can remain $0 while an allowance lasts, but you configure Linux, updates, firewall rules, restarts and monitoring.
- Low-cost VPS: You receive predictable resources and root access for a recurring fee, while remaining responsible for administration.
- Hardware you already own: A home PC or Raspberry Pi avoids a hosting invoice, but uptime depends on your electricity, internet connection and hardware.
“Free” therefore describes the cash charge, not necessarily the operational cost. A free host that sleeps or demands renewal every few days may cost more time than a small paid plan.
Compare the main hosting choices
| Option | Published price or allowance | Typical control | Main advantages | Main risks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Managed free tier | $0; examples include 256 MB plans | Panel, limited shell or no root access | Fast deployment, logs and provider-managed runtime | Sleep timers, renewals, tiny limits, advertisements or changing policies |
| Managed paid tier | About $2–$3/month in cited 2026 examples | Panel-based administration | More memory and usually an always-on commitment with little server work | Terms, backups, support quality and restart behavior still vary |
| Always-free cloud VM | $0 while the provider’s allowance and eligibility remain valid | Full operating-system access | Persistent process and broad software compatibility | You handle hardening, updates, monitoring and possible reclamation |
| Low-cost VPS | Basic examples: $4/month for 512 MiB, $6 for 1 GiB, $12 for 2 GiB | Root access | Predictable capacity and no application sleep timer | Recurring bill and complete server administration |
| Existing PC or Raspberry Pi | No hosting fee; electricity and internet still apply | Full physical control | No provider migration or monthly plan | Home outages, changing IP addresses, noisy hardware and security exposure |
The VPS figures above are Basic Droplet prices listed in a 2026 DigitalOcean pricing guide; they are reference prices, not a universal market rate. Cloud allowances and provider terms can change, so check the current offer in your region before committing.
Check always-on behavior before you pay
Sleep timers
Ask whether the container or virtual machine is stopped after a period without HTTP traffic. FadeHost, for example, describes a free address that sleeps after inactivity while its paid tiers remain awake. A Discord gateway connection is not the same as incoming web traffic, so an HTTP “keep-alive” workaround may violate terms and still fail when the platform enforces suspension.
Forced renewals
Some free plans require an explicit renewal. The bot-hosting and ACLClouds descriptions cite four-day renewal cycles. Missing one renewal can stop the process even though the account remains active. Put a calendar reminder in place only if the provider permits that use; do not assume a free plan is suitable for an unattended production bot.

Usage caps and reclamation
Read monthly hour, credit, CPU and bandwidth limits. An always-free VM may be reclaimed when an account exceeds an allowance or when capacity is needed. The provider’s definition of “always free” and its eligibility rules take precedence over marketing language.
How much RAM and CPU does a Discord bot need?
There is no single number: a small command bot, a music bot that buffers audio, and a bot with image processing have very different footprints. The important measurement is the process’s peak memory and CPU usage under the events and jobs your bot actually handles.
Published entry-level examples show the scale of the smallest plans:
Recommended Free Tools
- bot-hosting lists 256 MB RAM, 0.20 vCPU and 512 MB storage for its free deployment.
- FadeHost lists a 256 MB free plan and a paid plan with 1 GB RAM and one vCPU from $2 per month.
- Basic VPS examples list 512 MiB, 1 GiB and 2 GiB tiers at $4, $6 and $12 per month respectively.
These are plan capacities, not guarantees that every bot will fit. A runtime, libraries, logs, cache and temporary files consume memory before your own code does. Leave headroom for reconnects, dependency updates and short-lived spikes. If your process approaches the limit, the operating system may kill it or the host may throttle it.

A practical sizing process
- Run the bot locally with production dependencies and representative commands enabled.
- Record normal and peak resident memory, CPU and storage growth over several hours.
- Add headroom for reconnects, scheduled jobs and log rotation rather than sizing to the lowest reading.
- Choose the smallest plan that leaves that headroom, then recheck after every major feature or library change.
Storage is easy to overlook. A bot that stores a database, image cache or large logs can fill a 512 MB allocation even when RAM usage is low. Confirm whether storage persists across redeploys and whether logs count against the quota.
Persistence, backups and crash recovery
Persistent files
Container filesystems may be replaced during a redeploy. Verify that databases, configuration files and uploaded assets live on persistent storage, not only inside the running instance. ACLClouds advertises persistent files and live logs; bot-hosting advertises off-deployment backups, hidden secrets, logs and databases. Those are provider claims, so read the retention period and restoration procedure before relying on them.
Automatic restarts
A bot can disconnect because of a transient network error, an exception or a host reboot. Look for a supervisor that restarts the process, and confirm whether it distinguishes a crash from an intentional stop. ACLClouds describes automatic restarts. On a VPS, you must configure your own service manager and test it by stopping the process and rebooting the machine.

Keep an off-host copy of the database and source code. A backup stored only on the same deployment does not protect against account deletion, a failed disk or an accidental redeploy. Test restoring the backup to a clean directory; an untested backup is only an assumption.

Managed hosting versus a VPS
Choose managed hosting when
- You want to deploy from Git or upload files without learning Linux administration.
- You need a panel for environment variables, logs and a file editor.
- Your bot fits the provider’s runtime, memory and storage limits.
- You value a small, predictable monthly payment over root access.
Managed services reduce routine work, but they do not remove responsibility for token security, backups or policy compliance. Confirm how secrets are stored, who can view logs and what support covers.
Choose a VPS or cloud VM when
- You need custom system packages, a database server or a runtime the panel does not support.
- You can apply security updates, configure a firewall and supervise a long-running process.
- You want to host multiple services and can isolate them safely.
- You accept that an inexpensive server shifts incident response to you.
On a self-managed machine, protect the bot token as a password, disable unnecessary network services, use a non-root account for the process, apply updates promptly and restrict inbound ports. Keep credentials in environment variables or a secret store rather than committing them to a repository.
Deployment checklists
Managed panel
- Create the project and select the supported runtime version.
- Import the repository or upload the bot files.
- Add the bot token and other secrets as environment variables; never paste them into public source files.
- Set the start command and working directory exactly as required by the panel.
- Deploy, open live logs and confirm that the bot logs in without token or dependency errors.
- Restart the deployment manually, then verify that files, databases and environment variables remain available.
- Read the free-plan renewal, sleep and acceptable-use clauses and record the next renewal date if one is required.
VPS or always-free cloud VM
- Create a non-root user and enable key-based SSH authentication.
- Apply operating-system updates and configure a firewall that exposes only the ports you actually need.
- Install the bot’s runtime and dependencies from a locked dependency file.
- Store secrets outside the repository with permissions readable only by the bot user.
- Create a supervised service that starts on boot and restarts after failure.
- Configure log rotation and an external uptime or alert check.
- Reboot the VM, simulate a crash and restore a backup before inviting the bot to important servers.
Existing home hardware
- Use a dedicated user account and keep the operating system and runtime patched.
- Reserve a stable local address and configure router forwarding only when necessary.
- Measure outage frequency and upload limits; a residential connection may be unsuitable for a high-volume bot.
- Use a UPS or automatic restart where practical, and keep an off-device backup.
Policies, trust and geography
Read acceptable-use rules before uploading code. CogitHost’s terms, for example, restrict free slots to Discord bots and require a Discord presence or activity advertisement; limits may change. An advertising requirement, account verification rule or prohibition on certain workloads can matter more than a few cents of monthly savings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Treat phrases such as “true 24/7” and latency promises as claims to verify. Check incident history, support response and what happens when a host has an outage. HeavenCloud lists locations in the USA, India, Singapore/Johor and Germany, illustrating why region choice can affect WebSocket latency and data residency. For most bots, workload and host reliability matter more than shaving a few milliseconds, but choose a nearby region when Discord interaction speed or data location is important.

Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bot goes offline after quiet periods | Sleep policy or reclaimed free instance | Plan terms, inactivity timer and renewal status; move to an explicitly always-on tier if required |
| Bot disappears after redeploy | Ephemeral filesystem | Persistent-volume setting and backup restore; move data off the deployment |
| Process repeatedly restarts | Out-of-memory kill, unhandled exception or bad start command | Live logs, memory graph, dependency versions and supervisor configuration |
| Commands respond slowly | CPU throttling, distant region or overloaded host | CPU usage, provider status, region options and application workload |
| Account is suspended | Acceptable-use or free-plan violation | Terms, required activity advertisement, renewal records and support notices |
| Token stops working | Token exposed or rotated | Regenerate it in Discord, update the secret variable and remove it from logs and repositories |
Which option is cheapest for your situation?
For a learning or hobby bot
Start with an existing computer, an always-free VM or a managed free tier. Accept that a free managed plan may sleep or require renewal, and avoid putting an important community’s only moderation bot on an untested service.
For a small community that needs dependable uptime
A managed paid plan in the $2–$3 range can be the least expensive in total effort. Verify its memory, restart behavior, backups and terms rather than buying solely on the advertised number.
For several bots or custom infrastructure
A $4–$12 VPS range gives more predictable capacity than multiple restricted free deployments, provided you can perform updates, hardening, monitoring and recovery. A managed plan may still be cheaper when your time or Linux experience is limited.
Final buying checklist
- Does the plan remain running without web traffic?
- Are there renewal dates, monthly hour caps or reclamation rules?
- Do RAM, CPU and storage match measured peak usage with headroom?
- Do files and databases survive restarts and redeploys?
- Are backups off-deployment, restorable and retained long enough?
- Is automatic crash recovery included or must you configure it?
- Can you protect secrets and apply security updates?
- Are the region, support channel and data-residency terms acceptable?
- Does the acceptable-use policy permit your bot and its activity?
- What will the plan cost after any trial or promotional period?
SnowServers lists a seven-day Flurry trial followed by $3 per month, while bot-hosting lists a $1.99 monthly premium starting price and FadeHost lists a paid 1 GB, one-vCPU plan from $2 per month. These are 2026 provider prices and can change. Recheck the provider’s current billing page immediately before purchase.
If you can handle basic Linux administration, our top pick for an always-on bot is still an Antihost VPS: root access, no application sleep timer and a 14-day free trial to test your bot and your restart setup first.
