Short answer: the lowest published entry prices in this comparison are DigitalOcean Droplets at $4 per month and Amazon Lightsail at $5 per month, but they are different bundles. DigitalOcean’s entry Droplet has 1 vCPU, 512 MiB memory, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB of outbound transfer; AWS lists a $5 Linux/Unix Lightsail bundle with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer.
This guide treats “cloud hosting” as an affordable, virtual private server (VPS) or virtual-machine service. DigitalOcean’s and AWS’s pricing pages list these figures, and a 2026 DigitalOcean comparison article lists the other example prices. Use the framework below to compare the complete monthly cost, network allowance and administration work for your own workload.

A low-cost cloud server is a virtual machine running in a provider’s data center. You select a region and an operating-system image, then receive allocated virtual CPU, memory, disk and network capacity. The provider operates the underlying physical hardware and virtualization layer; you generally remain responsible for the guest operating system, updates, applications, data, credentials and backups.
DigitalOcean explicitly describes Droplets as VPS/IaaS: virtualized compute, storage and networking that customers manage themselves. That makes a Droplet closer to renting a small server than to buying fully managed website hosting. Amazon Lightsail uses fixed bundles of memory, vCPUs and SSD storage for a monthly price and includes a guided console, but you still need to maintain software installed on the instance.

- UPGRADED COOLING FAN - The G3 Ultra has upgraded the cooling fan to reduce fan noise and thermals. We are using an upgraded thermal paste as well to help reduce heat on the CPU.
“Cheap” therefore has two dimensions. The first is the invoice for the instance. The second is the time and expertise required to secure, update, monitor and recover it. A $4 server that requires hours of administration can cost more overall than a higher-priced managed service for a nontechnical owner.
Verified entry bundles at a glance
The following are the published entry configurations on the providers’ official pages in 2026. Monthly prices are recurring list prices for the stated bundles, not a claim that either provider is always the cheapest for every region or workload.
| Service | Published monthly price | vCPU | Memory | Storage | Included outbound transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Droplet | $4/month | 1 | 512 MiB | 10 GiB SSD | 500 GiB/month |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux/Unix general-purpose bundle | $5/month | 2 | 0.5 GB | 20 GB SSD | 1 TB |
The memory figures are effectively similar (512 MiB equals 0.5 GB for practical planning), while Lightsail’s entry bundle lists twice as many vCPUs, twice the SSD capacity and twice the transfer allowance. CPU count alone does not predict application speed: workload, processor generation, storage performance and contention also matter, and the provider pricing pages do not provide a comparable benchmark.
How other entry prices should be interpreted
A 2026 DigitalOcean comparison article lists example starting prices of $4/month for DigitalOcean, $5 for Vultr, $4.09 for Hetzner, $5 for Linode/Akamai, $6.11 for Google Cloud and $6.13 for Azure. Those numbers are published by DigitalOcean, use different plan assumptions and are not an independent, apples-to-apples test.
| Provider named in the comparison | Example starting price published by DigitalOcean |
|---|---|
| DigitalOcean | $4/month |
| Vultr | $5/month |
| Hetzner | $4.09/month |
| Linode/Akamai | $5/month |
| Google Cloud | $6.11/month |
| Azure | $6.13/month |
Use this table as a prompt to inspect each provider’s current calculator, not as a ranking. A price can represent a different region, processor class, billing interval, operating-system image, transfer allowance or storage type. Confirm the live plan before committing money or publishing a cost estimate.
The costs hidden behind the base instance
Build a monthly estimate from every resource your deployment uses:
Recommended Free Tools
- Compute: the instance or bundle itself, including any minimum billing interval.
- Persistent storage: additional volumes, larger disks or faster storage than the entry tier.
- Backups and snapshots: recurring storage charges or one-time image charges where the provider applies them.
- Public addresses: an attached or reserved IP may have a separate charge, especially when it is not attached to a running server.
- Load balancing and databases: separate services can exceed the cost of the original VPS.
- Network egress: traffic above the included allowance is billed at the provider’s published rate.
- Regional price differences: the same nominal size can cost different amounts in different locations.
Do not assume that a feature is free because it appears in a console. Check the current price sheet for the exact region, billing unit and resource state. The base prices in this article do not include extras whose current amounts were not established by the cited pages.

Transfer allowance and overage: the bill that surprises new users
DigitalOcean says Droplet outbound transfer starts at 500 GiB per month and lists public egress overage at $0.01 per GiB on its pricing page. If a server sends 600 GiB of billable public traffic in a month, the first 500 GiB are within that stated allowance and the additional 100 GiB would equal $1 at that published rate, before considering any other account rules.
“Outbound” means data leaving the provider toward visitors or another network. It is different from disk capacity and from inbound uploads. A media site, software mirror, image-processing service or API returning large files can exhaust an allowance quickly, while a small personal site may use very little. Estimate monthly bytes served, not just the number of page views.
DigitalOcean’s comparison article discusses an AWS allowance of 100 GB shared across services and regions, but that is vendor-authored comparative material. AWS allowances can vary by service and offer terms, so verify the current AWS conditions before using that figure in a budget. The Lightsail page separately lists 1 TB of transfer for the $5 Linux/Unix bundle.

- Describe the workload. Record the software, expected concurrent users, database size, file sizes, monthly outbound traffic, availability target and growth over the next year.
- Set a minimum resource floor. Choose required memory first, then CPU and disk. Leave headroom for the operating system, caches, logs, updates and traffic spikes; an entry plan that barely boots the application is not a sustainable choice.
- Normalize the price. Convert hourly or promotional figures to a recurring monthly estimate and add storage, backup, IP, load-balancer and expected egress charges.
- Check the network math. Compare included outbound transfer with your traffic estimate and apply the provider’s stated overage rate. Separate visitor traffic from replication, backup and inter-region traffic.
- Choose a region. Prefer a data center close to most users and to dependent services. The cited provider pages do not publish comparative latency or reliability results, so do not select a provider on an unsupported performance claim.
- Price administration time. List who will patch the OS, rotate keys, configure the firewall, watch disk space, respond to alerts and restore backups. If nobody can do that work, a self-managed VPS is the wrong tier regardless of price.
- Read offer conditions. Distinguish a recurring list price from a free credit, trial or promotional allowance. Confirm eligibility, duration, renewal behavior and what happens when the credit ends.
- Recheck before purchase. Pricing, regions, transfer policies and included features change. Open the provider’s current calculator and terms on the day you create the account.
DigitalOcean Droplets: the lowest listed entry price
What the $4 plan provides
DigitalOcean’s Droplets page lists a starting price of $4 per month for 512 MiB memory, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB of transfer. That compact specification can suit a lightweight Linux service, development sandbox, low-traffic static site or small monitoring endpoint when the software fits comfortably in 512 MiB.
Where the trade-off appears
Half a gigabyte of memory leaves little room for a database, control panel and several application processes at once. Memory pressure can cause swapping or out-of-memory failures, so measure actual usage and move to a larger size before the system becomes unstable. The entry disk also leaves limited space for logs, uploaded files and database growth.
Operational responsibility
DigitalOcean states that Droplet customers manage the operating system, applications and data. You must therefore select a supported image, apply security updates, restrict administrative access, protect secrets, configure backups and test restoration. The provider’s underlying infrastructure does not replace those tasks.
Amazon Lightsail: a fixed bundle with more included capacity
What the $5 Linux/Unix bundle provides
AWS lists a $5/month general-purpose Linux/Unix Lightsail plan with 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB of transfer. AWS also lists static IP, DNS management, console access, SSD storage and monitoring among Lightsail features. The bundle is easy to compare because the principal resources and price are presented together.

When the bundle is attractive
The extra disk and transfer allowance can matter more than the additional nominal CPU for a small site serving images or downloadable files. Lightsail can also be a gentler entry point for someone who wants a guided AWS console instead of assembling individual infrastructure services. You still administer the software installed on the virtual server.
Check the boundary with broader AWS billing
Lightsail is a bundled service, but related AWS resources or traffic paths can introduce separate charges. Keep DNS, storage, snapshots and any connected services inside the same cost review. Read the current Lightsail pricing page rather than assuming every AWS feature shares the bundle’s price.
Self-managed VPS versus managed hosting
A self-managed VPS gives you root-level control and predictable base resources, but you are the system administrator. Managed hosting shifts more patching, platform configuration and routine operations to the host, normally for a higher recurring price or with narrower software choices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose a self-managed server when you can perform updates, understand basic Linux security, monitor the service and recover from a failed disk or bad deployment. Choose a managed option when uptime and reduced maintenance matter more than root access, or when the site owner cannot respond to security alerts. Current provider pages do not list established prices for managed alternatives, so compare their actual service scope and renewal cost rather than assuming a fixed premium.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Match the plan to a real workload
Personal site or learning project
A 512 MiB or 0.5 GB instance may be adequate for a low-traffic static site or a small test application if logs and software remain compact. Use source control and an external copy of important data; the cheapest server is not a backup strategy.
Small content site or API
Count the memory used by the web server, runtime, database, cache and monitoring agent together. The Lightsail bundle’s 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer can provide more initial space and network headroom than DigitalOcean’s entry Droplet, while the Droplet’s $4 price may win when traffic and storage are minimal.
File delivery or media workload
Model outbound gigabytes before choosing. A plan with a lower sticker price but a smaller allowance can cost more once egress is billed. Consider object storage or a content-delivery service separately when files dominate the traffic; do not place large media collections on a tiny boot disk without a retention plan.

Production database or business-critical application
Do not select the entry tier solely because it is cheap. Verify memory headroom, backup frequency, restoration time, regional redundancy and monitoring. The cited provider pages contain no independent reliability or latency measurements, so obtain those service commitments directly from the provider before treating a plan as production-ready.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use SSH keys or another strong authentication method and disable unused login paths.
- Apply operating-system and application security updates on a defined schedule.
- Allow only required inbound ports through the host firewall and review rules after every deployment.
- Run the application with the least privilege practical; avoid using a permanent administrator account.
- Store secrets outside source code and rotate credentials after staff or vendors change.
- Monitor CPU, memory, disk fullness, process health and outbound traffic.
- Keep backups in a separate failure domain and perform a test restore before trusting them.
- Set billing alerts so an attack, runaway process or traffic spike is visible before the invoice arrives.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing by price alone
Symptom: the server becomes slow as soon as the database, control panel or logging agent is installed. Correction: size for measured memory use and reserve headroom; compare the next tier’s complete price, not just the entry tier.
Ignoring outbound traffic
Symptom: a file-heavy site generates an unexpected charge. Correction: estimate monthly gigabytes, identify which services send the data and calculate overage using the provider’s current rate.
Treating a trial as a permanent plan
Symptom: the bill changes when credits expire. Correction: record the credit amount, eligibility, expiration and post-credit rate before deployment. AWS says Lightsail can be accessed through Free Tier credits, but offer conditions apply and must be checked in the current terms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming the provider manages the application
Symptom: an outdated package or exposed service is discovered after deployment. Correction: assign ownership for patching, firewall rules, monitoring and incident response, or move to a genuinely managed service.
Skipping recovery practice
Symptom: a snapshot exists but cannot restore the complete application. Correction: document the rebuild process, keep data and configuration copies separately and run periodic restoration drills.
Which cheap cloud hosting option should you choose?
- Choose DigitalOcean’s entry Droplet when the $4 recurring price and 500 GiB allowance fit a genuinely small, self-managed workload and you value a straightforward VPS model.
- Choose the $5 Lightsail bundle when 20 GB of SSD and 1 TB of included transfer are more useful than saving one dollar, or when a fixed AWS bundle and guided console suit your workflow.
- Investigate other providers when a required region, processor type, transfer policy or ecosystem integration is unavailable in these two plans. Treat published comparison prices as leads, not proof of a winner.
- Use managed hosting instead when you cannot take responsibility for operating-system maintenance, security updates, monitoring and recovery.
Final buying checklist
- Write down required memory, CPU, disk and monthly outbound gigabytes.
- Open the provider’s live pricing calculator for the intended region and operating system.
- Add persistent storage, backups, addresses, load balancing and realistic egress.
- Confirm renewal pricing and any free-credit expiration date.
- Assign an administrator and document patching, monitoring and restoration.
- Deploy a small, noncritical workload first and watch resource and traffic metrics before migrating important data.
No provider can be identified as the independently verified market-wide “cheapest” option from the published provider pages. On the published 2026 figures, DigitalOcean offers the lowest listed entry price, while Lightsail supplies a larger fixed bundle for one dollar more. The right choice is the bundle whose resources, transfer allowance and administration requirements match your workload after all recurring costs are counted.
