You can often lower a U.S. wireless bill by switching to an MVNO or a carrier-owned prepaid brand—but the right option depends on local coverage, data and hotspot needs, and the full recurring price. Compare the network and plan terms before moving your number; a low advertised rate is not necessarily the price you will pay after renewal, taxes, or add-ons.
What makes an MVNO a cheaper alternative?
A mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) sells wireless service using a major carrier’s network. Carrier-owned prepaid brands can also provide an alternative to a traditional postpaid plan. These options may cost less, but they can differ in data priority during congestion, included perks, roaming, device financing, and customer support. Prepaid service may offer less access to live support, so weigh that trade-off against the help you expect to need. NerdWallet’s 2026 prepaid-plan overview discusses these distinctions.
The network name alone does not tell you how service will perform at your home, workplace, or regular destinations. Coverage and congestion are location- and time-dependent; check the provider’s coverage information and, if possible, try service before porting your primary number.

Which cheaper providers use each major network?
The following network associations are listed in US Mobile’s August 2026 comparison and the cited comparison sources. Confirm the specific plan and network option before enrolling, since a provider can offer more than one network or change its arrangements.

The comparison notes that major-carrier headline rates typically require autopay, while prepaid providers commonly include taxes and fees. That distinction makes a simple price-to-price comparison imperfect. Before switching, compare the actual recurring total, whether the advertised rate depends on autopay or prepayment, how much you must pay upfront, and the rate at renewal.
How to compare plans beyond the advertised price
“Unlimited” does not mean identical service. A plan may have a high-speed data threshold, a speed cap, a different priority during congestion, or a limited hotspot allowance. These terms affect what happens when you use the phone heavily, even when the coverage map looks suitable.

- WHAT YOU GET: Three (3) months of unlimited talk, text, and data delivered on the nation's largest 5G network. Data speeds may slow after 50GB when network is busy but data is unlimited. Videos stream at 480p.

- WHO SHOULD GET IT: Anyone who hates their phone bill
- WHY YOU SHOULD GET IT: Mint Mobile took what’s wrong with wireless and made it right. We re-imagined the wireless shopping experience and made it easy and online.
- Data and congestion: Find the plan’s high-speed data conditions, any hard speed cap, and what happens after an allowance is used. Ask how the provider handles traffic during congestion; the effect depends on local network conditions.
- Hotspot: Check whether tethering is included, how much high-speed hotspot data is available, and whether a separate hotspot speed limit applies.
- Price and commitment: Compare recurring and renewal rates, taxes and fees, autopay requirements, introductory offers, multi-month or annual prepayment, and line-count restrictions.
- Features and support: Check roaming, international features, bundled perks, device financing, and whether support is available by phone, in a store, or primarily online.
- Device compatibility: Verify that your phone is unlocked and supported, and confirm whether the provider supports its eSIM or physical SIM. Many people can keep a compatible phone rather than buying a new one.
The FCC’s 2024 provider comparison (FCC 24-136) provides historical context on carrier pricing and reported data-deprioritization terms. It is not a current 2026 price list; use each provider’s current plan terms for a present-day decision.
How much might you save by switching?
There is no reliable single savings figure that applies to every customer. Your result depends on your current bill, number of lines, chosen plan, device payments, add-ons, discounts, taxes, fees, and any perks you would give up. A lower plan rate can be offset by losing a bundle discount or continuing to pay for a device on the old account.
Rank #4

Estimate your own difference by comparing the full monthly cost of the service you use now with the recurring total for the replacement plan, including applicable fees and any required prepayment. Treat broad savings estimates as estimates with assumptions, not a promised customer outcome. For example, LowerMySubs’ June 13, 2026 comparison presents its own estimates; they are not a universal or independently established result.
How to switch without disrupting your number
- Check coverage where you use your phone. Review the target network for home, work, and regular travel. If available, try a trial or temporary line before moving your main number.
- Check your phone. Confirm it is unlocked and compatible with the provider, then verify eSIM or physical SIM support. Resolve any carrier lock before attempting to activate service elsewhere.
- Calculate the real cost. Check the rate after promotions, required prepayment, taxes, fees, and any service you would lose by leaving your current account.
- Match the plan to your use. Review data priority, hotspot limits, roaming, support options, and multi-line terms against how you actually use your phone.
- Keep your current service active during the transfer. Follow the providers’ current number-porting instructions and wait until the new line works and the number transfer is complete before canceling the old service. Exact procedures vary by carrier.
Which option should you shortlist?
Start with the major network that works best in the places you depend on, then compare the plan’s full recurring cost and conditions. If you need a particular provider or support feature, include that in the shortlist rather than choosing on price alone. The named providers are examples, not a universal ranking: confirm current plan details and local fit before committing.
