The cheapest antivirus is not necessarily the lowest first-year offer. Compare protection-test results, the renewal cost, the number of devices covered and whether you will use the extras. For Windows users, Microsoft Defender is a no-extra-cost baseline; a paid subscription makes more sense when you need broader device coverage or specific additional features.
How to judge a cheap antivirus subscription
Compare the total cost over the period you expect to subscribe, not just the introductory price. Check the renewal amount and date, how many devices are covered, supported operating systems and whether the bundle’s extras are useful to you. A VPN, identity monitoring, a password manager, parental controls or cloud storage may add value, but they are separate from the core question of malware protection.
Independent lab results can help narrow the choices, but they are snapshots of particular products and test periods—not a permanent ranking for every device or user. AV-Comparatives assessed 20 consumer products in its March 2026 Consumer Malware Protection Test; several products, including Bitdefender Total Security and Microsoft Defender Antivirus, received Advanced+ recognition. In a separate February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test, AV-Comparatives assessed 20 home-user security programs and awarded Advanced+ to seven products: Avast, AVG, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Microsoft, Norton and TotalAV. Shortlist: candidates to compare
Bitdefender Total Security: a tested candidate with a broad bundle
Bitdefender Total Security received Advanced+ recognition in both the March 2026 Consumer Malware Protection Test and the February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test. It is a reasonable candidate to compare if you want a paid product, but the available test results do not establish that it is the cheapest. Before buying, check the local price, renewal terms, device count and supported operating systems for the exact subscription.
Microsoft Defender: the built-in Windows baseline
Microsoft Defender Antivirus also appeared among the Advanced+ products in the cited 2026 AV-Comparatives tests. It is included with Windows rather than requiring a separate antivirus subscription. TechRadar describes Windows Security and Defender as useful built-in protection, particularly when kept updated. Norton: check the renewal price, not just the offer
Tom’s Guide displayed Norton 360 Deluxe at $49.99 per year in an article last updated September 22, 2026, and warned that a first-year rate may be followed by a price increase. That is a dated editorially reported offer, not a price confirmed for your location or a current vendor quote. The same article reports Norton 360 received 6/6 in AV-TEST’s Protection, Performance and Usability categories for February 2026. AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 test included Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free, among other products. TechRadar also notes that a free Avast One tier is available, while its review describes F-Secure Total as combining security features with a potentially noticeable system impact. These are options to investigate rather than a claim that every free tier or bundle will suit your devices. Confirm the current edition, supported systems and included functions before choosing. Why rankings and prices can disagree
Different reviews may evaluate different test types, dates, product versions and configurations. A result from a real-world protection test is not interchangeable with one from a malware protection test, and neither determines the local subscription price or whether a bundle’s extras are worthwhile to you.
AV-Comparatives’ 2025 annual report names Avira, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, McAfee and Norton among the vendors whose products had the best overall results across that year. Its pricing material reflects Austria in December 2025 and cautions readers against using the table to compare products directly because package scope differs. When a paid subscription may be unnecessary
If you use Windows and want core built-in protection rather than a bundle of additional services, start by checking that Windows Security and Microsoft Defender are enabled and kept updated. TechRadar identifies them as useful built-in protection. Whether that is enough depends on your devices, habits and needs; a Windows feature does not provide a paid subscription’s additional coverage or services, and it is not a substitute for updates and cautious security practices.

A free antivirus tier may also fit if its supported devices and features meet your needs. Compare what is included in the specific free edition with what you would actually use in a paid bundle, rather than assuming that a paid package is automatically better value.

Check these terms before you buy
- Write down the full price. Record the introductory charge, renewal amount, billing frequency, tax and currency shown for your country. Treat a dated review price as a reference point, not a live quote.
- Match coverage to your devices. Confirm the subscription’s device limit and operating-system support, including whether the exact plan covers every computer or mobile device you intend to protect.
- Separate protection from extras. Decide whether you will use the VPN, identity monitoring, password manager, parental controls or cloud storage included in the plan. Do not pay extra for features you do not need.
- Understand renewal and cancellation. Check whether auto-renewal is required or enabled by default, when billing occurs, and how to turn renewal off or cancel. - Compare against your existing protection. If you use Windows, consider whether Defender already meets your needs before adding a subscription; if you need broader coverage or paid features, compare those benefits with the full renewal cost.
