No: cheap 5G phones have not disappeared from India, but the squeeze is clearest at the lowest end of the market. A Gadgets 360 catalog updated 7 October 2026 still listed several 5G models below ₹15,000. Separately, IDC’s Q1 2026 figures show a steep decline in smartphones priced below US$100 and growth in the US$100–200 tier. Those are overall smartphone price bands, not 5G-only measurements or direct rupee equivalents of the ₹10,000–₹15,000 range.
What does “the end of cheap 5G phones” really mean?
It depends on what “cheap” means. If it means that a buyer can still find a 5G phone listed below ₹15,000, the answer is yes: the 7 October 2026 catalog included multiple models in that bracket. If it means the market is under pressure to move away from its cheapest devices, IDC’s Q1 2026 data points in that direction.
The distinction matters. IDC’s price tiers are denominated in US dollars and cover smartphones generally. They do not establish how many 5G phones India sells at ₹10,000, ₹15,000, or any specific price between them.

Why is the cheapest end under pressure?
IDC reported 31.0 million smartphone shipments in India in Q1 2026, a 4.1% year-over-year decline. Yet smartphone market value grew 5.8%, and the average selling price reached a record US$302, up 10.4% year over year. The figures describe a market selling fewer phones but generating more value overall; they do not mean every buyer is paying US$302.

The sharpest movement was in IDC’s sub-US$100 segment: shipments fell 59% year over year, and its share of the market dropped from 18% to 8%. By contrast, the US$100–200 mass-budget tier grew 10%, with share rising from 39% to 45%. These are market-wide results, not a direct measurement of India’s under-₹15,000 5G selection.
IDC attributed entry-level pressure to global memory-cost inflation, subdued consumer demand, and less room for aggressive promotions. Its analysts also described higher component costs and limited discounting as factors behind rising average prices. IDC’s Upasana Joshi forecast on 12 May 2026 that prices could rise further across segments, citing a memory shortage expected to continue into 2027 and rupee depreciation. That is a forecast, not a guarantee of how any particular phone’s price will change.

Other market shifts offer context, but not proof of what will happen to this specific price band: IDC reported a 14% year-over-year fall in online-channel shipments, with share declining from 42% to 38%. Mid-premium phones priced US$400–600 grew 29%, while premium US$600–800 phones grew 32%.

Yes. A Gadgets 360 catalog marked updated 7 October 2026 listed examples including the iQOO Z10x at ₹13,267, Lava Virat V1 5G at ₹13,099, and Samsung Galaxy A16 5G at ₹12,796. These are catalog prices on that date, not assurances of local stock, the amount due at checkout, or a recommendation based on comparative testing.

How should you compare phones near the ₹15,000 limit?
Compare the exact RAM and storage variant, not just the model name. A phone’s listed price can change with configuration, retailer, stock, bank or exchange conditions, and date. Record the price you can actually pay at checkout and check the offer terms before treating a model as within budget.

Then compare the features that affect your own use. Samsung’s Galaxy M17 5G announcement claims a Super AMOLED display, optical image stabilisation (OIS), and six generations of OS upgrades plus six years of security updates. OPPO’s K13x 5G announcement lists an IP65 rating, a 6,000mAh battery, and 45W charging. These are manufacturer specifications or support claims, not independent findings about day-to-day performance. Verify current availability and support terms with the manufacturer.

- Performance: Look for processor details and independent tests that match the specific variant you are considering.
- Display: Check the panel type, resolution, and refresh rate rather than assuming all phones at a similar price are alike.
- Battery and charging: Compare capacity and charging specifications, while treating stated figures as specifications rather than a promise of real-world battery life.
- Camera: Check whether the camera hardware includes stabilisation, and seek independent sample-based testing before judging image quality.
- Durability and support: Distinguish a manufacturer’s ingress-protection or software-support claim from independent verification and confirm the terms for your exact model.
The available price snapshots and manufacturer announcements do not provide a consistent independent test across these phones, so they are not enough to declare a best choice.

What is the practical verdict for buyers?
The end of the road is too strong a claim: under-₹15,000 5G listings were still present on 7 October 2026. But the wider smartphone market is shifting away from its very cheapest tier, and IDC’s figures identify cost inflation and subdued demand as pressures. For a buyer, the useful question is not whether every cheap 5G phone is gone; it is whether a current listing, in the right variant and on acceptable offer terms, meets the needs that matter most.
