There is no universal privacy winner. ChatGPT offers the clearest separation between model improvement and chat history: you can turn off model improvement while keeping ordinary chats, or use Temporary Chat for a conversation that stays out of history. Gemini provides activity review, deletion, auto-delete and Temporary Chats, but Google still processes those chats for responses and safety, and reviewer-retained data follows separate rules. Meta’s Incognito Chat makes the strongest privacy promise—unsaved, disappearing conversations processed in an environment Meta says it cannot access—but the feature was announced for a rollout over coming months, so availability depends on your app, account and region.
This comparison covers consumer-facing controls and provider-published practices checked October 13, 2026. It is not an independent security audit. Settings, regional availability and product behavior can change.
What “best privacy controls” actually means
Privacy is not one switch. For an AI chatbot, check each of these separately:

- Model improvement: whether conversations can be used to train or improve models.
- History: whether chats remain visible in your account.
- Retention: how long the provider keeps temporary or deleted data.
- Human review: whether reviewers may inspect conversations and how long reviewer-related data remains.
- Personalization: whether chats influence memories, recommendations or advertising.
- Connected services: whether Google apps, plugins, search providers or linked social accounts receive or use the data.
- Scope: whether the setting applies to a personal account, a managed workspace, a particular app or only one chat mode.
“Not used to train,” “not in history,” “deleted,” “not reviewed” and “not used for ads” are different outcomes. A service can satisfy one while not satisfying the others.

ChatGPT privacy controls
Turn off model improvement while keeping chat history
For a personal account, open Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says new conversations made after the switch are not used to train its models. They can still appear in your normal chat history, and this switch does not erase existing conversations. To remove saved chats, delete them separately.
This is ChatGPT’s clearest distinction: model improvement and history are independent controls. Someone who wants searchable history but does not want new chats used for training can choose that combination.
Use Temporary Chat for a conversation outside history
Start a new Temporary Chat from the chat-mode control before entering sensitive material. OpenAI describes Temporary Chats as excluded from history, excluded from memory creation or updates, and not used to improve models while they are temporary. The company may retain them for up to 30 days for safety and abuse monitoring.
Temporary does not automatically mean unpersonalized. If personalization is enabled, a Temporary Chat may use existing memories, custom instructions and plugins. Disable those features separately when the conversation must not draw on prior profile information or connected tools.
Keep memory, training and deletion separate
- Turning off model improvement does not delete chats already in history.
- Deleting a chat does not necessarily change information retained under separate safety or legal processes.
- Memory controls govern remembered facts and personalization, not the model-improvement toggle.
- Plugins or other connected services can have their own data handling rules.

Business and managed workspaces
Do not assume personal-account instructions apply to a managed workspace. OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Workspace owners can set retention, access and feature availability, so an administrator’s policy may be stricter—or different—from your personal settings.
Gemini privacy controls
Review activity and choose auto-delete
Open Gemini Apps Activity from your Google account controls to review or delete activity, choose auto-delete and decide whether activity can be used to improve Google AI. Google’s current choices described in its Gemini Apps Privacy Hub are three months, 18 months (the stated default), 36 months or indefinite retention.
Deleting Gemini activity does not delete data held by other Google services, and it does not erase data retained because a conversation was reviewed by a human reviewer.
Turn off Keep Activity
With Keep Activity off, Google says future chats are not used to improve AI models unless you submit feedback. Google still uses chats to provide responses and to protect Google, users and the public. If you send feedback, it can include recent conversation context and uploaded or Connected App content, so do not treat the opt-out as an absolute no-processing switch.
Use Temporary Chat
Temporary Chats do not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity. Google says they are not used for personalization or model training and are retained for up to 72 hours to answer your request and process feedback. That 72-hour period is not instant deletion.

Understand human-review retention
Google says some chats may be reviewed by human reviewers for service and safety. Chats reviewed by those reviewers, along with related data, can be retained for up to three years and are not deleted when you delete Gemini activity. This is the most important qualification to Gemini’s short 72-hour temporary-chat statement: the general temporary retention period and reviewer-related retention are separate paths.
Check settings outside Gemini
Gemini controls do not change other Google settings such as Web & App Activity or Location History. Connected Google apps and third-party services follow their own privacy policies. Google also describes a separate control for using audio, video and screen-share data to improve services; its announcement says that control is off by default.
Meta AI privacy controls
Incognito Chat: the strongest claim, with availability limits
In a May 13, 2026 announcement, Meta described Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app as a conversation processed in a secure environment Meta cannot access. Meta says messages are not saved and disappear by default. The company said rollout would continue over coming months rather than publishing a universal availability table.
Check the current WhatsApp or Meta AI app for an Incognito option before relying on it. Availability can differ by app version, account and region. These are Meta’s product claims, not the result of an independent technical audit; do not extend them to every Meta AI conversation surface.
Ordinary Meta AI chats can affect recommendations and ads
Meta announced that, starting December 16, 2025, it would use interactions with AI features to personalize content and ad recommendations in most regions. Meta says Ads Preferences and feed controls can adjust what you see. It also says conversations on specified sensitive topics—including religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs and trade-union membership—are not used to show ads.

Cross-account use depends on Accounts Center links. Meta’s example says WhatsApp AI interactions are not used to personalize experiences across Meta products when the WhatsApp account is not added to Accounts Center. Review linked accounts if keeping one service’s AI activity from informing another service matters to you.
Reset information shared in some AI chats
Meta’s general privacy explainer says information shared with its generative AI features may be used to improve products and for other purposes. It also says some questions may be shared with trusted partners such as search providers. In Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp, the /reset-ai command can delete information shared in some AI chats. The command is not a substitute for Incognito Chat and does not establish a universal deletion schedule for every Meta AI surface.
In a group chat, Meta AI reads messages that invoke @Meta AI or replies that invoke it, rather than silently reading every message in the conversation, according to Meta’s explainer.
How to configure each service for the least exposure
ChatGPT: history without model improvement
- Open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- For sensitive one-off questions, start a Temporary Chat instead of a normal chat.
- Review Memory, custom instructions and connected plugins if the temporary conversation must not use existing personalization.
- Delete ordinary chats separately when they no longer need to remain in history.
Gemini: minimize activity and feedback exposure
- Open your Google Account’s Gemini Apps Activity page.
- Turn Keep Activity off if you do not want future chats used to improve AI models.
- Do not submit feedback on a sensitive conversation; feedback may include recent chat context and uploaded or connected-app content.
- Choose the shortest available auto-delete period if you need ongoing activity controls.
- Use Temporary Chat for a conversation that should stay out of recent chats and Gemini Apps Activity.
- Review Connected Apps and separate Google activity settings, because Gemini’s controls do not override them.
Meta AI: use Incognito when available, then check account links
- Update WhatsApp or the Meta AI app and look for Incognito Chat.
- Confirm that the chat is actually marked Incognito before entering sensitive information; do not assume a normal AI thread has the same protections.
- Open Meta’s privacy and account settings and review Accounts Center links.
- Use Ads Preferences and feed controls to adjust recommendation and advertising personalization.
- For eligible existing chats, send
/reset-aito request deletion of information shared with Meta AI. - In group chats, invoke Meta AI only when you are comfortable with the invoked message and reply being processed.

Common privacy mistakes
Assuming an opt-out deletes existing data
ChatGPT’s model-improvement switch does not remove history. Gemini activity deletion does not remove reviewer-retained data or information held by other Google services. Meta’s /reset-ai command applies only to some AI chats. Always identify whether you need to stop future use, hide a chat, or request deletion.

Treating “temporary” as “never retained”
ChatGPT may retain Temporary Chats up to 30 days for safety. Gemini keeps temporary and off-activity chats for up to 72 hours, while reviewer-related data can remain up to three years. Temporary modes reduce routine persistence; they are not proof of immediate destruction.

Ignoring connected tools
A chatbot can pass information to a connected app, plugin or search provider under that service’s own policy. Disable integrations or review their policies before entering confidential material.
Using the wrong account or surface
A personal ChatGPT setting may not control a business workspace. Gemini’s app controls do not change other Google activity settings. Meta’s Incognito promise does not automatically cover a standard Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp or Meta AI chat. Verify the account, app and mode displayed on screen.
Relying on a provider’s strongest marketing sentence
Meta’s statement that Incognito conversations are inaccessible to Meta is specific to Incognito Chat. Google’s 72-hour statement is separate from its three-year reviewer-retention statement. OpenAI’s no-training setting is separate from history and memory. Read the surrounding conditions before comparing a single headline claim.

Choose ChatGPT if your main need is a clear, user-controlled split between model improvement and saved history, or if you want a well-defined Temporary Chat mode with explicit memory behavior. Choose Gemini if activity review, auto-delete choices and a temporary mode that excludes personalization and model training are most important—but account for ongoing response and safety processing and possible reviewer retention. Choose Meta AI Incognito Chat only when the option is actually available in your app and your priority is Meta’s strongest claimed unsaved, disappearing mode; do not generalize that protection to ordinary Meta AI chats.
The practical answer is therefore priority-based, not a single privacy score. Before sharing sensitive information, check the current control, account type, region, connected services and retention language for the exact chat mode you are using.
