For everyday tasks that involve controlling an Android phone, Gemini is the clearest choice in the available documentation. Google describes it as a mobile assistant that can respond to on-screen content and, when enabled with the necessary settings and permissions, handle actions such as alarms, timers, notifications, media, and selected device settings. For web research with cited sources, Perplexity is the strongest fit. Claude has documented connections for several personal-app tasks, while the available evidence does not establish how ChatGPT compares on Android system actions.

That is a feature-fit verdict, not a claim that one assistant gives the best answers overall. There is no controlled four-way test here, and published evidence does not support ranking all four by accuracy, speed, or overall quality. The better choice depends on what you want the assistant to do: operate the phone, find and cite information, or work with particular apps.

Quick comparison: which assistant fits which Android task?

Assistant Best-supported fit Documented Android capabilities Important limits in the available documentation
Gemini Quick phone actions and help with on-screen content Can take typed, spoken, or photo input; answer questions about on-screen content; and, with relevant access enabled, manage alarms, timers, notifications, media, app opening, and selected settings. Some actions depend on country, language, account, settings, and permissions. Some familiar Google Assistant features remain unsupported.
Perplexity Web research and answers accompanied by cited sources Its Google Play listing describes guided AI search, follow-up conversations, voice answers, and cited sources. The listing does not establish superior factual accuracy or broad Android system control.
Claude Workflows involving supported messaging, email, calendar, maps, alarms, or timers Anthropic documents Android actions involving those apps, plus a limited Health Connect integration for eligible users. Android reminders are unavailable; Claude has no direct access to contacts. Health Connect is read-only and has eligibility restrictions. Message and email tasks include user review.
ChatGPT A general assistant app when its documented app features meet your needs OpenAI confirms the official Android app, chat-history access, and response actions such as reading aloud, sharing, copying, and retrying. The sources available for this comparison do not provide a comprehensive, like-for-like list of Android system actions.

These are comparisons of documented capabilities, not test scores. Google Play ratings, review totals, and download counts would not establish which assistant performs best at a task, so they are not used as performance evidence here.

Choose Gemini when phone control matters most

What Gemini can do on Android

Google describes Gemini as a mobile assistant that accepts typed and spoken prompts as well as photo input. Its general assistance includes writing, translation, brainstorming, and summaries. When activated over another app, it can answer questions about the content on the screen, which is useful when you need help understanding or working with something already open rather than starting a separate search.

For phone operations, Google documents actions that include setting alarms and timers, opening apps, reading and replying to notifications, controlling media, and changing selected device settings. It can also connect with Google Home routines. These capabilities make Gemini the strongest documented fit in this comparison when “everyday tasks” means acting on the phone itself, rather than only answering questions in a chat window.

Do not assume that every action is available immediately or works in every situation. Google says some actions may require notification access or making the Google app the default digital assistant. Availability can also vary by country, language, account, and settings. A supported feature in Google’s documentation is not a guarantee that it will work with every app, device configuration, or request.

Gemini’s requirements and feature gaps

Google’s current Gemini availability page, accessed October 13, 2026, lists Android 9 or later and at least 2 GB of RAM as the minimum Android requirements. It says Android Go is not supported. The same page says Gemini mobile apps are available in more than 150 countries, while noting that availability can still exclude some locations, languages, accounts, and work profiles. These figures describe access, not response quality or the availability of every feature in every market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google also notes that some familiar Google Assistant features remain unsupported in Gemini. Examples include some media providers and Interpreter mode. If a task depends on a specific Assistant feature, check whether that feature is supported in Gemini in your setup before relying on it. A general statement that Gemini can control media or use voice does not settle compatibility with every provider or function.

How to make a fair first attempt

  1. Check that the phone meets Google’s stated Android and memory requirements, and that Gemini is available for your location, language, account, and profile.
  2. Open Gemini and try a simple task that matters to you, such as asking about visible on-screen content or requesting an alarm or timer.
  3. If a phone action does not work, review whether the required permission is enabled. For notification reading or replies, Google says notification access may be required.
  4. If you want Gemini to act as the phone’s assistant, check whether the Google app needs to be selected as the default digital assistant on your device. The exact settings path can differ by Android version and manufacturer.
  5. Test the specific app or service you expect to use. Do not infer support for a media provider, setting, or Assistant feature from a successful test of a different action.

Google cautions: “Gemini may give inaccurate or inappropriate information, including about people, so double-check responses.” That warning matters even when an answer appears in the context of a phone task: verify consequential details rather than treating the assistant as an authority.

Choose Perplexity when research and citations are the priority

Perplexity is the clearest match for readers who routinely ask questions that require exploring the web and following source links. Its Google Play listing, updated September 28, 2026, describes guided AI search for deeper exploration, follow-up conversations, voice answers, and cited sources. Those features support recommending it for research-oriented use: you can pursue a topic through follow-up questions and inspect sources associated with an answer.

Citations are useful for checking claims, but their presence does not prove that an answer is correct, complete, or supported by every linked source. Open the cited material and confirm that it actually backs the point you care about, especially for high-stakes or fast-changing information. The Play listing describes product features; it is not an independent accuracy benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listing also does not show that Perplexity can control Android settings as broadly as Gemini, nor does it establish that it is more accurate than the other assistants. If your main request is “set a timer,” “manage a notification,” or “change a device setting,” this evidence does not make Perplexity the leading choice. Its strongest documented role in this comparison is research, not system-level phone control.

Consider Claude for supported app-based tasks

Messages, email, calendar, maps, alarms, and timers

Anthropic’s Android help article dated August 25, 2026, describes a substantial set of app-related actions. Claude can draft or send messages through a default or third-party messaging app, prepare emails in the device’s mail app, use location for suggestions, display locations and directions on maps, read and manage a calendar, and set alarms or timers.

Those capabilities may fit a workflow better than a general phone-control feature if the task is specifically about a supported app. For example, someone who wants help preparing a message or email may value the documented workflow, while someone mainly seeking quick access to phone settings may prefer Gemini’s more explicit device-assistance coverage. The distinction is about documented fit; it is not a test of which assistant completes the same task more reliably.

Anthropic describes user review and action cards for message and email tasks. Do not characterize these workflows as universally silent or fully autonomous: review what Claude has prepared and use the action presented in the app to confirm or proceed. The documentation does not mean every messaging or mail app, account, or action will behave identically.

Health Connect is a narrow, restricted feature

Claude’s Health Connect integration is in beta. Anthropic says it is limited to Pro and Max plans, Android 14 or later, and users in the United States. Health data access is read-only, so it should not be mistaken for a way to write or change health records.

Anthropic states: “We are not a medical device and cannot provide medical guidance.” Treat any Health Connect interaction as access to personal health data for the feature described, not as diagnosis or clinical advice. If you need medical interpretation or a decision about care, consult an appropriate healthcare professional.

Two limitations to account for

  • Android reminders: Anthropic says reminders are unavailable on Android. Do not choose Claude on the assumption that its other calendar or alarm actions imply reminder support.
  • Contacts: Claude has no direct access to contacts. If your task depends on selecting or looking up a saved contact, that limitation may add steps or make the workflow unsuitable.

What the available ChatGPT evidence does—and does not—show

OpenAI’s Android FAQ confirms the official ChatGPT app and describes response actions including read aloud, sharing, copying, retrying, and access to chat history. Google Play describes the official app as free, with history sync and image generation. OpenAI’s FAQ also provides country-availability guidance and links to the Android Plus cancellation process.

Those details establish that ChatGPT is a viable Android assistant app with useful chat and response features. They do not establish a comprehensive list of actions it can perform across Android settings, notifications, alarms, or personal apps. For that reason, this comparison cannot fairly rank ChatGPT against Gemini on phone control, or conclude that ChatGPT lacks a particular action. Before making it your choice for a specific Android operation, verify that the current app supports that operation on your device and account.

OpenAI says precise-location sharing is optional and that the app does not otherwise access the device’s location, Bluetooth, or similar services to collect or approximate precise location by default. If location matters to a task, check the current app permission and sharing controls rather than assuming the assistant can infer or use your location automatically.

Compare assistants by the task, not by a single “best AI” score

“Best” can mean a fast phone action, a sourced research answer, a draft prepared in a personal app, or a general conversational tool. A single ranking hides those differences. Use the following checks before settling on one assistant.

1. Does the task require an Android action?

For device actions, distinguish an assistant that answers a question from one that can carry out the requested operation. Gemini has the clearest documented coverage here, but actions can depend on permissions and default-assistant settings. Claude documents particular app actions. The current evidence does not establish an equivalent, comprehensive action inventory for ChatGPT or Perplexity.

2. Do you need web research and inspectable sources?

If source links are part of the job, Perplexity’s listing explicitly describes cited answers and guided search. That is a stronger documented match for research than a generic claim that an assistant can answer questions. Still inspect citations: source visibility helps verification but does not guarantee that an answer interpreted the material correctly.

3. Which input and output modes will you actually use?

Gemini’s documentation describes typed, spoken, and photo input, along with questions about on-screen content. Perplexity’s listing describes voice answers. ChatGPT’s documented Android response controls include reading an answer aloud. These features are not identical, and the supplied official descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison of voice recognition, image understanding, or output quality across the four apps.

4. Does it connect to the personal app your task depends on?

Claude has documented actions involving messaging, email, calendar, and maps, with the limitations already noted. Gemini documents notification and media actions as well as selected settings. For ChatGPT and Perplexity, the evidence here does not establish a comparable inventory of personal-app integrations. Verify a specific workflow instead of assuming a general assistant label means the app can reach your calendar, contacts, mail, or messages.

5. Will it work with your device, language, region, and account?

Gemini’s documented access and actions vary by country, language, account, and settings; its Android minimums are Android 9 and 2 GB of RAM, with Android Go unsupported. Claude’s Health Connect feature has narrower requirements: US users, Android 14 or later, and Pro or Max. ChatGPT has country-availability guidance. Check the current service documentation for your situation, because broad app availability does not ensure every feature is available to every user.

6. Is the needed feature free, or does it require a paid plan?

The available sources do not establish a comparable, current table of prices, free-tier quotas, or usage limits across all four services. Claude’s cited Health Connect article is explicit that this beta feature requires Pro or Max, but that does not establish the cost or limits of other features. Prices and plan terms can vary by country and change over time; check each provider’s current offer in your market before paying for a subscription.

A practical way to choose on your own phone

  1. Write down your three most frequent tasks. Be specific: “ask questions about what is on screen,” “find a web answer and inspect its sources,” or “prepare an email in my mail app” is more useful than “help me be productive.”
  2. Match each task to documented capability. Start with Gemini for phone actions, Perplexity for cited web research, or Claude for the particular supported app workflow you need. Treat ChatGPT as a general assistant option, but verify any Android action that would determine your choice.
  3. Check eligibility and access before changing your routine. Look at Android version, device type, location, language, account or work-profile restrictions, and any paid-plan requirement relevant to the feature.
  4. Test the real workflow, not a nearby substitute. If you need to send a message, test that process; if you need an alarm, test an alarm. A successful answer to a general question does not prove an app action works.
  5. Inspect permissions and review steps. Grant only the access needed for your task. Where a workflow presents a draft, action card, or confirmation, review the content before proceeding.
  6. Keep a fallback for important actions. If an assistant cannot perform a task, use the relevant Android app or system control directly. Do not rely on an assistant for an action that you have not verified on your device.

Verdict by everyday use case

  • Pick Gemini if your priority is having an assistant act on Android—especially for documented quick actions, notification handling, media, selected settings, or on-screen help—and the required feature and permissions are available to you.
  • Pick Perplexity if your routine centers on exploring web questions and following citations to sources.
  • Consider Claude if its documented messaging, email, calendar, maps, alarm, or timer actions fit your workflow, and its Android reminder and contact limitations do not block it.
  • Consider ChatGPT as a general assistant app if its chat, history, and response features suit you; verify current Android system actions before choosing it for phone control.

No assistant is established here as the overall winner for answer quality. The most defensible decision is task-specific: Gemini for the clearest documented Android integration, Perplexity for cited search, and Claude for supported app workflows. ChatGPT remains an option, but the available Android action evidence is not detailed enough for a fair system-control ranking.
