Short answer: None of these assistants is automatically “private” in every sense. ChatGPT lets consumer users switch off model improvement, while eligible business and API products say customer content is not used for training by default. Claude lets consumers choose whether chats improve the model and offers Incognito chats that are excluded from improvement. Gemini uses the Keep Activity setting: turning it off prevents future chats from being used to train models (unless you submit feedback), but Google still keeps those chats for 72 hours. Retention, human review, safety processing, administrator access, and deletion are separate questions from training.

For a sensitive one-off prompt, minimize identifying details, disable the applicable improvement setting, use a temporary or incognito mode, and do not submit feedback containing the sensitive conversation. For business use, compare the organization plan and contract—not the consumer app—because defaults and administrator controls differ.

What “privacy” means in an AI chatbot

When people ask whether a chatbot “trains on my chats,” they usually mean several different data practices:

  • Model training or improvement: whether conversation content can be used to develop or fine-tune generative-AI models.
  • Service retention: how long a provider keeps text, files, metadata, or logs to operate the service.
  • Safety and abuse monitoring: access or analysis used to detect attacks, fraud, policy violations, or threats.
  • Human review: whether trained reviewers can inspect a sample of conversations or feedback.
  • Account history: whether chats remain visible in your account and are removed when you delete them.
  • Derived copies: de-identified datasets, feedback records, safety logs, or model parameters that may not disappear immediately when a chat is deleted.

A “training off” switch addresses only the first item. It does not promise immediate deletion, zero operational storage, or that no authorized person or automated system can access data for security and service delivery. Each provider also changes its interface and policy wording over time, so check the current setting before entering sensitive information.

At-a-glance comparison

Question ChatGPT Claude Gemini
Consumer training control Data Controls can turn off model improvement. Privacy Settings include a Model Improvement choice. Keep Activity controls whether chats are saved and used to develop and train models; feedback is an exception.
Temporary or private mode Use the most restrictive temporary and history controls available in your current ChatGPT interface. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. Temporary Chat is available in Gemini; Keep Activity off is the principal account-level control.
Retention detail to know OpenAI separates ordinary service retention, deletion, and safety processing; there is no single consumer-retention number that applies to every case. Improvement-enabled data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years; commercial products have separate policies. Keep Activity defaults to 18-month auto-delete; activity-off chats are retained for 72 hours; some human-reviewed chats can remain up to three years.
Human review OpenAI describes service operations and authorized access; do not infer that training-off means no human access. Safety review can involve conversation analysis, and feedback conversations can be retained for up to five years. Google explicitly says human reviewers assess some data. Reviewed chats can be retained up to three years and disconnected from the account.
Organization products Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API content is not used to train models by default, according to OpenAI’s stated policy. Team, Enterprise, and API products have distinct commercial retention and administrative controls. Workspace administrators can control settings for work and school accounts.

ChatGPT: controls, retention, and review

Consumer training setting

On a personal ChatGPT account, open Settings → Data Controls and turn off the option for model improvement (the label can change as the interface is updated). This is a forward-looking preference: new content is excluded from the stated improvement use after the setting takes effect. It is not a promise that existing operational logs vanish instantly or that every safety and security process stops.

Data Controls also provide related choices such as chat history, data export, and account deletion. Treat each choice independently. Disabling history, for example, is not the same as requesting account deletion, and disabling model improvement is not the same as deleting a conversation.

Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API content

OpenAI states: “By default, OpenAI does not use content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces to train its models.” The same no-training-by-default language applies to API content in OpenAI’s organizational guidance. An organization can still have retention, logging, legal-hold, administrator-access, and security requirements, so a customer should read the product-specific terms and its own contract.

What retention means here

OpenAI’s privacy policy distinguishes service operation, deletion, and safety processing instead of giving one universal retention period for every ChatGPT conversation. A training switch therefore cannot be interpreted as “stored for zero days.” Content may remain while the service responds, protects accounts, investigates abuse, satisfies legal obligations, or completes deletion workflows. The exact period can depend on the product, account type, and reason for retention.

How to reduce exposure in ChatGPT

  1. Open Settings, then Data Controls.
  2. Turn off the model-improvement option and confirm the change.
  3. For a sensitive task, start a temporary or otherwise non-history conversation mode if your current interface offers it.
  4. Remove names, account numbers, exact addresses, secrets, and unnecessary attachments before sending a prompt.
  5. Do not paste the conversation into feedback forms when it contains confidential material.
  6. Delete the conversation or export and delete the account when your retention requirement calls for it; remember that deletion and training exclusion are separate operations.

Claude: Model Improvement, Incognito, and five-year retention

Consumer Model Improvement choice

Claude’s consumer documentation says chats may be used to improve Claude when the user enables the Model Improvement setting. In Claude’s privacy controls, turn that option off if you do not want eligible new conversations used for improvement. As with other services, the setting does not mean the provider can never process the conversation for security, support, or service delivery.

Incognito chats

Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito is therefore the clearest choice for a one-off sensitive conversation when you do not want to change the account-wide preference. It should still be treated as a hosted service: avoid entering information that would cause harm if retained for a limited operational or safety purpose.

How long improvement-enabled data can remain

Anthropic’s Privacy Center says data used for improvement may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years. Feedback conversations can also be stored for up to five years. “De-identified” does not mean that the original account history remains visible to you, nor does it guarantee that every derived copy is erased when you delete a chat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Anthropic says changing the training preference or deleting chats excludes the affected data from future training use under its policy. That should be read cautiously: it does not imply that a model already trained on earlier data is instantly retrained from scratch, or that safety and legal records are erased at the same moment.

Commercial and API products

Claude API and enterprise offerings follow separate commercial policies. Organizations can configure retention in ways that are unavailable to a personal user. Anthropic documents six-year defaults for some local session transcripts, but that figure is product- and policy-specific, not a universal rule for every Claude conversation. Confirm the exact product, region, contract, and administrator setting before adopting a retention schedule.

How to reduce exposure in Claude

  1. Open Claude’s Privacy Settings.
  2. Turn off Model Improvement for the account, or use Incognito for a single sensitive task.
  3. Do not provide thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or written feedback that reproduces confidential text unless your organization has approved that process.
  4. Delete the conversation when it is no longer needed and follow your organization’s retention policy for exports or shared transcripts.
  5. For API or Team/Enterprise use, ask the administrator which commercial retention policy and logging settings apply.

Gemini: Keep Activity, 72-hour retention, and human review

Keep Activity on

Gemini’s Keep Activity setting controls whether chats are saved to activity and may be used to develop and train Google’s generative-AI models. Google says human reviewers may assess some data. The default auto-delete period is 18 months, and users can change it to three months, 36 months, or indefinite. These are activity-history settings, not guarantees that every safety, feedback, or legal record follows the same timer.

Keep Activity off

With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to train models unless you submit feedback. Google still retains those chats for 72 hours so Gemini can respond, process feedback, and protect users and the public. Google’s wording is explicit: “Future chats are still saved for 72 hours so that Gemini can respond to you, process your feedback, and protect Google, its users, and the public.” Turning the setting off therefore reduces long-term use but does not create zero-retention, instant deletion, or a no-review guarantee.

Reviewed chats and deletion limits

Google says chats selected for human review can be retained for up to three years. Those reviewed conversations are disconnected from your Google Account and are not deleted when you delete Gemini activity. This is the clearest example of why account deletion and deletion of every derived copy are different promises.

Temporary Chat and feedback

Use Gemini’s Temporary Chat when the option is offered for a short-lived conversation, and keep Keep Activity off for the account-level setting. Do not send feedback on a sensitive chat: feedback can create an additional record and is specifically identified as an exception to the activity-off training restriction.

Work and school accounts

For Google Workspace accounts, an administrator may control Gemini settings, retention, and availability. A work account can therefore behave differently from a personal Google account even when the interface looks similar. Ask the Workspace administrator which data region, retention rule, audit log, and model-use policy applies.

Training, retention, and human review are different decisions

Statement What it does mean What it does not mean
“Not used for training” The content is excluded from the provider’s stated model-development use under that setting or product policy. It does not guarantee immediate deletion, no safety processing, no legal retention, or no authorized access.
“Temporary” or “Incognito” The chat is handled under a more restrictive history or improvement rule. It is not an offline notebook or a promise that the service never stores short-lived operational copies.
“Deleted from activity” The visible account history is removed according to the provider’s deletion process. It does not necessarily remove de-identified datasets, feedback records, safety logs, legal holds, or reviewed copies already disconnected from the account.
“Human review” A subset of content or feedback can be inspected by authorized reviewers for safety, quality, or policy enforcement. It does not mean every conversation is read by a person.

Which assistant is safest for sensitive information?

There is no universal winner because “safest” depends on whether you mean training exclusion, shortest stated retention, administrative control, or contractual protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want the shortest stated consumer operational window

Gemini with Keep Activity off has the most specific short window in this comparison: 72 hours. That period is for service response, feedback processing, and protection, so it is not zero storage. Do not submit feedback on the sensitive conversation, and remember that a reviewed chat can be retained separately for up to three years.

If you want an explicit private-chat mode

Claude’s Incognito statement is unusually direct: Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when the account-wide Model Improvement setting is on. Anthropic nevertheless states that improvement-enabled data and feedback can be retained up to five years, so use Incognito and minimize data rather than relying on a blanket “private” label.

If you use an organization plan

ChatGPT’s Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API products have the clearest no-training-by-default language in the supplied policies. Claude Team, Enterprise, and API and Gemini Workspace can also provide administrative controls, but the actual answer depends on the contract, configured retention, region, audit settings, and administrator decisions. Obtain those terms in writing before sending regulated or confidential data.

A practical decision checklist

  • Classify the data: public, internal, confidential, personal, regulated, or legally privileged.
  • Choose the right product: do not send company secrets through a personal consumer account when an approved enterprise environment exists.
  • Disable improvement: ChatGPT Data Controls, Claude Model Improvement, or Gemini Keep Activity off.
  • Use a temporary mode: Claude Incognito, Gemini Temporary Chat, or the most restrictive temporary/history option available in ChatGPT.
  • Minimize the prompt: redact names, identifiers, credentials, exact locations, and unnecessary files; replace them with neutral labels.
  • Avoid sensitive feedback: feedback can preserve the conversation or create a separate review record.
  • Delete deliberately: remove visible history, then check exports, shared links, browser downloads, team logs, and administrator retention.
  • Recheck after changes: interfaces and policies change, so verify the toggle before each high-risk workflow.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Mistake: treating a toggle as a deletion command

Turning off model improvement or Keep Activity changes future use; it does not necessarily erase prior chats or derived records. Delete the conversation separately and consult the applicable product policy for remaining operational and safety retention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming temporary means inaccessible to everyone

Temporary and Incognito modes still require the provider to process a message. They may retain short-lived copies for response, abuse prevention, debugging, or feedback. Never use them as a substitute for an approved offline workflow when disclosure would be unacceptable.

Mistake: sending feedback on a confidential answer

Feedback can attach the conversation to a quality or safety review process. If you need to report a problem, redact the sensitive text first or use an internal incident channel approved by your organization.

Mistake: comparing a personal account with an enterprise contract

Consumer defaults and organization controls are different products. Check whether your account is personal, Business, Enterprise, Team, API, or Workspace, then read the matching retention and training terms.

Bottom line

For personal use, disable model improvement or Keep Activity before entering sensitive material, use Incognito or Temporary Chat where available, redact aggressively, and avoid sensitive feedback. ChatGPT provides a clear consumer training switch and no-training-by-default language for several organizational products; Claude offers an explicit Incognito exclusion and documents up to five years for some improvement-enabled data; Gemini provides the most specific activity-off period at 72 hours but can retain reviewed chats for up to three years. None of these controls means “never stored” or “never reviewed,” and an organization’s contract and administrator settings can change the result.
