Choose based on where your workbook lives and what you need the assistant to do. ChatGPT offers spreadsheet-native experiences in Excel and Google Sheets as well as file-based analysis; Claude can analyze uploaded data and create downloadable Excel workbooks; Gemini’s documented spreadsheet-native tools work inside Google Sheets. The available product documentation does not establish which tool is most accurate. To compare results for your work, test each on the same copy of a representative workbook and verify its formulas, references, totals, and edits.
How the three spreadsheet workflows differ
The main distinction is not a proven accuracy ranking; it is the working surface and output. ChatGPT and Gemini can work inside spreadsheet apps, while Claude’s documented spreadsheet workflow centers on uploaded files and generated workbook output. ChatGPT also supports file-based analysis separately from its spreadsheet-native experiences.

Choose ChatGPT if you want to work in Excel or Google Sheets
ChatGPT’s spreadsheet-native experiences are the clearest fit when you want an assistant in the application where you already work. OpenAI describes the experience as using the prompt, attachments, and relevant spreadsheet context to provide analysis and update a workbook. It also offers a separate file-analysis workflow, so the choice is not limited to working inside a spreadsheet app.

OpenAI describes availability across Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 offerings. That does not mean every feature or usage allowance is identical across those plans. Connected apps and data sources can be affected by plan entitlements, workspace administration, permissions, and account capabilities. Check what is enabled in your own account before designing a workflow around an integration.
Choose Claude if you want an uploaded dataset or a generated Excel workbook
Claude is relevant when you want to provide data and ask for analysis, or have an Excel workbook created or edited as an output. Anthropic documents spreadsheet outputs that can include formulas, formatting, and charts, alongside Python-based analysis and visualization from files such as CSV and TSV. Its help documentation also describes generated PNG visualizations and a workflow for downloading files or saving them to Google Drive.
The file limit is 30 MB per file for upload and download in the documented workflow. Consider both the size of the source file and the size of the output you expect. Anthropic announced file creation on September 9, 2025, and said it became generally available for paid plans with network and egress controls on October 21, 2025. Those historical availability details do not guarantee that a particular account or organization has the feature enabled today; check current plan access and administrative settings.

Choose Gemini if you want supported actions in Google Sheets
Gemini’s documented spreadsheet experience is in Google Sheets. It is a particularly direct match for tasks such as asking a question about sheet data, generating a formula, fixing a formula error, creating a chart, or making supported changes to the sheet. Google describes a preview card and an Apply step for direct actions, which gives you a chance to inspect a proposed change before it is applied.
Google says Gemini works best with native Google Sheets files. If you have an Excel .xlsx workbook, save or convert it to Google Sheets to use Gemini Sheets features. Conversion changes the working file format, so preserve a copy of the original if you need to keep an Excel version unchanged. Google requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan; eligibility can vary, so verify it for your account.
What each tool can do to a spreadsheet
The following is a feature-oriented map based on the vendors’ documentation. “Documented” means the capability is described by the provider, not that every plan, file, or workbook will support it equally.

For ChatGPT uploads, OpenAI says connected sources such as Google Drive, OneDrive, and SharePoint may be available through connectors. That is separate from the in-sheet experience and depends on the user’s plan and workspace configuration. Treat a connector as an account-specific option rather than assuming that every user can access every source.

How to use each workflow
Use ChatGPT in Excel or Google Sheets
- Check access first. Open the spreadsheet experience available in your Excel or Google Sheets environment and confirm that your plan and workspace permit it. If you need a connected app or data source, confirm that it is enabled and that you have permission to use it.
- Work on a copy for consequential edits. Preserve the source workbook before requesting changes to formulas, layout, or data. This makes it possible to compare the result with the original.
- State the task and its constraints. Name the relevant sheet or range, the intended result, and any rules that must remain true—for example, which columns are inputs, which contain formulas, and whether existing formatting should be preserved.
- Review the workbook after the update. Inspect changed cells, formula references, totals, and formatting. Do not assume that an answer in chat proves that every relevant part of the workbook was updated.
Analyze an uploaded file with ChatGPT
- Choose a supported file type. OpenAI’s data-analysis documentation lists .xls, .xlsx, and .csv among spreadsheet formats. Supported types can vary with model, plan, workspace settings, and account capability.
- Upload the file or use an available connector. Google Drive, OneDrive, or SharePoint access may be available through connectors, subject to account and organizational rules.
- Ask a bounded question. Specify which measures, columns, period, or calculation you want examined. If exact values matter, use the spreadsheet or text-based data rather than a scanned or image-based table.
- Check completeness against the source. OpenAI warns that very large, complex, image-heavy, or poorly structured files may not be fully analyzed. If an answer seems incomplete, inspect relevant sections separately or split the file into smaller, understandable portions.
Create or edit a file with Claude
- Check the file size and account access. The documented upload and download ceiling is 30 MB per file. Confirm current Claude plan access and any organization-level controls before relying on file creation.
- Upload the workbook or data file. For an analysis task, Claude documents CSV and TSV among the supported inputs. Describe the purpose of the file and the output you need.
- Specify the desired workbook structure. If you want an Excel output, state the required sheets, formulas, formatting, and charts. If the workbook is used for decisions, identify which source values and assumptions should remain unchanged.
- Download or save the generated file, then inspect it in a spreadsheet app. Verify formulas and references, check totals against the input, and make sure the formatting and charts communicate the intended result.
Apply Gemini actions in Google Sheets
- Open the native Google Sheet. If the source is an .xlsx, convert or save it as Google Sheets first to use Gemini Sheets features. Keep an original copy if preserving the Excel file matters.
- Ask for an analysis or a specific edit. Google’s help examples include “Summarize this spreadsheet.” and “Identify trends in this table.” For a change, specify the relevant range or desired outcome as clearly as possible.
- Review the preview card for direct changes. Gemini’s documented flow provides an action preview and an Apply step. Check that the proposed action matches the intended cells and operation before applying it.
- Verify the result in the sheet. Check the affected range, formulas, totals, filters, formatting, and any inserted or deleted rows or columns.
How to compare accuracy for your own work
Official feature pages explain workflows and capabilities, but they do not establish a shared accuracy ranking for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. No independent controlled comparison using the same workbook, prompts, plans, and scoring criteria is established here. OpenAI reported 43.7% with GPT-5 and 87.3% with GPT-5.4 Thinking on its internal investment banking benchmark in 2026, for tasks including building a three-statement model with formatting and citations. That is an OpenAI-reported result on an internal benchmark, not a head-to-head test against Claude and Gemini and not a general spreadsheet-accuracy score.
If the choice matters, run a small comparison using the same non-sensitive workbook, task wording, and evaluation rules. A copied workbook is safer than a live business file because it lets you inspect edits without risking the original.

- Select a representative file. Use a workbook that resembles your real work in layout, formulas, data types, and complexity. Remove confidential or personal data unless your organization has explicitly approved the tool and data flow for it.
- Choose tasks with checkable answers. Examples include reconciling a subtotal to its component rows, explaining a formula, identifying a trend in a defined period, or applying a specified formatting change. Avoid judging an open-ended summary alone.
- Use the same prompt and starting data. Keep the instructions, workbook content, and requested output consistent. Record the tool, account plan or relevant access mode, and whether the work happened in an app or via file upload; those differences can affect the workflow.
- Score the result against the source. Check arithmetic, formula logic, references, inclusion and exclusion criteria, range coverage, and formatting. For edits, compare changed cells with the request and look for unintended changes outside the target range.
- Repeat with another realistic task before deciding. One successful result does not prove that a tool handles other workbook structures or tasks reliably. Use the outcomes to choose a workflow that you can review and safely maintain.
File complexity, access, and governance to check
Complex workbooks can produce incomplete analysis
Spreadsheet structure matters. OpenAI specifically warns that very large, complex, image-heavy, or poorly structured files may not be fully analyzed. Merged cells, long or irregular layouts, and embedded image tables can make it harder to establish which data belongs together; the practical response is to make the relevant area explicit, use text-based data for exact values, or break a large task into manageable sections. This is a reason to validate coverage, not a guarantee that splitting a file will fix every issue.
Access is not the same as universal availability
OpenAI’s stated plan coverage for ChatGPT’s spreadsheet experiences spans Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 offerings, but limits and available features differ. Administrators can manage workspace access, and connected sources depend on permissions and entitlements. OpenAI also documents organizational controls including role-based access and, where available, data and inference residency and Enterprise Key Management. It says some data logs may be stored for 30 days for safety and integrity. Organizations should check the current controls and retention terms applicable to their own workspace before using business data.

Keep a reviewable source of truth
For any assistant that edits data, retain an untouched source copy and make changes in a version you can inspect. Before using an edited workbook operationally, compare formulas and references to the original, test totals against a known result, and review the changed cells. If the output will feed reporting, finance, or another consequential process, use the organization’s ordinary approval and reconciliation steps rather than treating a generated workbook as validated merely because it opens successfully.
A practical decision
- You work mainly in Excel or Sheets and want an assistant in that app: examine ChatGPT’s spreadsheet-native experience for the app and account access you have.
- You need to analyze uploaded data and receive an Excel workbook: Claude’s file workflow is a plausible fit, provided each file is within the documented 30 MB limit and your plan allows it.
- You want formulas, sorting, pivots, formatting, or other documented actions in Google Sheets: Gemini’s native Sheets workflow directly matches those tasks, provided your account is eligible and the workbook is in Sheets format.
- You need the most accurate result: the documented facts do not identify a winner. Compare tools on the same representative workbook and verify each result against the source.
There is no universal winner across every spreadsheet task in the available evidence. The practical choice is the workflow that fits your spreadsheet app, file constraints, account access, and review process—and that performs acceptably on your own repeatable test tasks.
