OpenAI began rolling out GPT-Live-1.1 and the smaller GPT-Live-1.1 Quip in ChatGPT Voice on October 15, 2026. The update adds language-specific voices for French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish, plus a new English voice called Bubbie. Your available choices depend on your account, region, plan and app version.
What GPT-Live-1.1 changes
GPT-Live-1.1 is the current Live voice model for eligible plans, while GPT-Live-1.1 Quip is the mini version used on lower-access tiers. OpenAI describes the release as an improvement to accent naturalness across languages rather than a separate ChatGPT product.
Live uses a full-duplex architecture: it listens continuously while generating speech. That lets it decide many times per second whether to speak, pause, keep listening, interrupt, or call a tool. It can hand search, reasoning or agentic work to another model without ending the spoken conversation. This is why an interruption or a short pause can feel more like a human exchange than a strict question-and-answer turn.
OpenAI says more than 150 million people each week talk to ChatGPT using Voice and Dictation features. The October rollout is staged, so two accounts in the same country may not show the same catalog immediately.

New language and voice choices
The current catalog lists these options. OpenAI notes that the voices displayed can vary by region and account.

Brazilian Portuguese appears in the voice list alongside the six newly highlighted language areas. “Mexican Spanish” is a regional choice, not a claim that every Spanish variety has the same voice set. If a listed voice is missing, the rollout may not have reached your account, or workspace and parental-control settings may be restricting it.

How to change the ChatGPT Voice
- Open the voice settings. In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Voice → Voice.
- Select an available voice. The list shown there is the authoritative catalog for your account.
- Start or return to a conversation. On a phone, tap the Voice icon and allow microphone access when prompted. On the web, select the Voice icon in the prompt window.
- Change calls carefully. Selecting a different voice during an active conversation starts a new voice call in the same chat; it does not continue the existing audio session.
If the Voice icon is absent, update the ChatGPT app, verify that microphone permission is enabled in the operating system, and check whether your plan or workspace administrator allows Voice.

The hours are plan allowances, not a guarantee that every account receives the same voice catalog at the same time. Workspace policies, region, app version and parental controls can also affect availability.
What Live can and cannot do
Supported in the same chat
- Web search and memory, when those features are available to your account.
- Visual results through supported widgets.
- Text and image messages.
- Plugins and connected apps supported by your account.
Still unavailable in Live
Live cannot currently share video or your screen. Eligible subscribers can use Advanced for those functions, but that is a different mode. Do not start a Live call expecting the assistant to see a camera feed, app window or desktop.

Why ChatGPT may interrupt you
Interruptions are a consequence of the full-duplex design, not necessarily a malfunction. Live is evaluating incoming audio while it speaks and may infer that you have finished, that a pause is intentional, or that it should yield the floor. Background conversations can also be picked up because Live is designed primarily for one-on-one use.

- Use headphones to reduce speaker feedback and nearby speech.
- Move to a quieter room and keep the microphone unobstructed.
- Check the operating system’s microphone input and permission settings.
- Allow a short pause before speaking again if Live has not detected the end of your sentence.
- Check your network connection; packet loss can make turn-taking and recognition appear erratic.
Voice transcripts are not verbatim records. Audio clips from Live and Advanced conversations are retained with the transcript for 30 days, subject to OpenAI’s stated security, legal and training settings. Avoid treating an automatically generated transcript as a legal, medical or meeting record without checking the audio and correcting errors.

Which voice should you choose?
There is no universal best voice. Choose within the language or regional variety you actually speak, then test pronunciation of names, numbers and specialist terms. For French, compare Aube and Rivage; for German, Sonna and Miko; for Hindi, Leher and Neer; for Japanese, Himari and Rindō; for Korean, Haetsal and Hanul; and for Mexican Spanish, Tinta and Arrullo. The account-level preview and your own listening experience matter more than a voice’s name because availability and behavior can change as the rollout continues.
