If ChatGPT or Codex appears to update but no desktop window opens, first check which app you now have: OpenAI says the Codex app updates into the new ChatGPT desktop app, while the earlier ChatGPT app may remain installed as ChatGPT Classic. That migration can explain a changed app name or entry, but OpenAI’s guidance does not establish one universal cause for an invisible window. Try the Windows app’s reset option, then use blank-screen troubleshooting steps only when they fit what you see.
Why the app name or window may look different
OpenAI’s migration guidance says that after the update, the Codex app becomes the new ChatGPT desktop app, which includes Chat, Work, and Codex. The previous ChatGPT desktop app may remain installed as ChatGPT Classic. OpenAI’s July 16, 2026 release notes add that Codex remains a separate view within the updated desktop experience, with its workflows and history unchanged.
So, an updated Codex installation may now launch under the ChatGPT name rather than the old Codex app name. This explains a possible change in what you see in Windows; it does not explain why a particular installation displays no window. The official guidance does not identify a single cause for that symptom.

OpenAI’s Windows app guide lists Windows 10 (x64 or ARM64), version 17763.0 or higher, as the system requirement. Compare that with your Windows version if compatibility may be relevant. Meeting the requirement does not guarantee that the app will open, and falling short is not a diagnosis of the specific failure.

Reset the ChatGPT Windows app
OpenAI documents a reset option for the Windows app. Use this path:
- Open Windows Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed Apps.
- Find ChatGPT and open its menu.
- Select Advanced Options, then Reset.
This is an official reset procedure, not a guaranteed fix for every case where no window appears. If Windows lists ChatGPT Classic or another app entry instead, note the exact name you are launching; the documented reset path is for ChatGPT.
Choose blank-screen steps that match the symptom
OpenAI’s general guidance for blank, frozen, or endlessly loading experiences includes several steps that are primarily aimed at web rendering. They may help if the desktop app opens to a blank or stuck view, but they may not apply when the desktop process never displays a window.
- If a window appears but its contents are blank or frozen: try reloading or force-reloading the experience, then sign out and back in if you can reach the account controls.
- If the problem looks tied to web content: clear site data and disable extensions or content blockers in the relevant browser context.
- To isolate a broader loading issue: try another browser profile, browser, network, or device as appropriate. These comparisons can help distinguish a web or network problem from a desktop launch problem, but they do not prove the cause.
Do not treat browser-focused steps as a required repair sequence for an app that never shows a window. If you cannot access the app’s controls, move on to the app-specific or support options instead.

For a Codex-specific problem, use the Codex guidance
OpenAI directs users with Codex-specific issues to its Codex platform guide. The Codex Doctor mentioned on the Codex plan page is a Windows command-line diagnostic for startup, connectivity, and performance. It is for the CLI; it is not documented as a repair utility for the ChatGPT graphical desktop app.
What to send OpenAI Support if the window is still missing
Contact OpenAI Support with enough detail to identify the affected installation and reproduce the sequence. Include:
- The exact app name shown in Windows and the app version, if available.
- Your Windows version and whether the app produces an error or stays entirely invisible.
- When the issue began and what happened immediately before it, including the update and any steps already tried.
- Relevant diagnostic details or screenshots of any error message.
For persistent browser issues, OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance recommends collecting browser console logs and a HAR file. Those browser diagnostics are not necessarily available or relevant when a desktop window never opens, so provide them only when the problem involves a browser-rendered experience.
