If ChatGPT unexpectedly signs you out, start by signing in with the same method you used to create your account. If that fails, test a private browser window, check browser cookies and extensions, and then look at network, service, or account-status issues. There is no single cause established for every unexpected logout.
Why can’t I log in to ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s troubleshooting guidance covers several possible causes: using a different sign-in method from the one linked to the account, browser data or extensions interfering with authentication, network settings, a temporary service problem, or an account restriction. Work through these checks in order so you can isolate the cause rather than changing several things at once.
Sign in with the account’s original method
Go to the official ChatGPT sign-in page and use the method originally linked to your account. For example, if you registered with Google, Microsoft, or Apple, select that provider instead of entering an email and password. Using another method can result in an authentication error even when you enter the same email address. OpenAI’s guide, Why can’t I log in to ChatGPT?, gives this advice for people who previously could sign in but now cannot.
Isolate browser problems
Try a private window
Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window and try signing in. If it works there, the issue may be related to the regular browser’s stored data or an extension. Next, try another browser or device and temporarily disable extensions that could affect sign-in, such as privacy, script-blocking, or security extensions.

Check cookies and JavaScript
Make sure cookies—including third-party cookies—and JavaScript are allowed for the relevant ChatGPT and OpenAI sign-in domains. Verification loops can occur when these are blocked. If you clear data, target ChatGPT/OpenAI site data rather than wiping all browser data; clearing all data can also sign you out of other websites.
For the specific iOS error “Cookies are disabled” during Google sign-in, OpenAI says to turn off Safari’s “Block Cookies” setting. That documented case does not establish cookies as the cause of every unexpected logout. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT iOS app troubleshooting guidance.

Check your network and OpenAI service status
If sign-in fails across browsers or devices, consider whether a VPN, proxy, secure DNS feature, or network security filter is interfering. Temporarily disable the relevant setting, if appropriate, or try another network. These are diagnostic checks for certain errors, not universal fixes.
For a generic error or a problem affecting multiple users, check OpenAI’s status page. OpenAI’s error-message troubleshooting guide also recommends refreshing or restarting, trying private browsing or another browser/device/network, and clearing browser data when relevant. If ChatGPT opens to a blank or endlessly loading page, signing out and back in is among its suggested steps.

Respond to suspicious-login warnings carefully
If you see “We have detected suspicious login behavior,” OpenAI recommends clearing browser cache and cookies, switching networks, and turning off an active VPN. Avoid repeated immediate attempts: OpenAI advises waiting up to one hour before retrying because multiple failed attempts can trigger temporary restrictions. Contact Support if the problem persists
If the same issue continues across browsers, devices, and networks, OpenAI recommends contacting Support with diagnostic details. Its error guide asks users in persistent cases to collect a HAR file and browser console errors, including timestamps. These diagnostics can help Support investigate what is happening during the failed sign-in.

OpenAI says a chat started while logged out remains accessible only during the current session in the same browser; it is not saved as account history. Do not assume that signing back in will recover it. See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.
