Neither service can be declared categorically more private from the published controls alone. ChatGPT for Teens gives a clear, documented answer about parent visibility: a linked parent or guardian cannot read conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. Google documents Family Link controls for supervised accounts, especially children under 13, but the materials do not establish one general rule for Gemini conversation visibility or retention for older teens across every account type and country.
The practical difference is scope. ChatGPT for Teens is an under-18 experience with optional account linking and selected in-product controls. Gemini guidance here centers on age eligibility and Family Link management for supervised children, while Google’s broader account-supervision tools cover devices and services rather than providing a Gemini transcript dashboard.

What “privacy” means in this comparison
There are two different privacy questions, and confusing them leads to bad advice.

This asks whether an adult who manages the account can inspect a teen’s prompts, replies, history, or activity as it happens. OpenAI directly addresses that question for linked ChatGPT teen accounts. Google’s Family Link documentation describes supervision of accounts, apps, devices, and filters, but the cited pages do not provide a comparable, all-teen rule about Gemini transcripts.

Provider data handling
This asks whether the company stores activity, uses it to improve models, retains it for a period, or discloses it under its policies. A parent being unable to open a conversation does not prove that the provider does not retain or process it. The product-control pages discussed here are not complete privacy-policy analyses, so families should review the applicable account and service policies separately.
How ChatGPT for Teens works
Eligibility and automatic placement
OpenAI describes ChatGPT for Teens as the regular ChatGPT experience with additional learning features, balanced-use cues, optional parental controls, and age-appropriate safeguards. When account-provided age information, verified age, or age prediction indicates that the account holder is under 18, an eligible account is automatically placed in the teen experience. OpenAI says this applies to eligible personal Free and paid plans.
That classification is an account decision, not a parent-selected switch. A parent cannot simply choose an adult experience for a minor, and a teen does not need to activate a separate “teen app” to receive the experience. Age-assurance processes and product availability can change, so the account’s current notices and settings are the authority for a particular user.

The teen experience can include study-focused prompts and flows, quizzes when available, homework reminders, study hours, break reminders, and reminders that ChatGPT is an AI system. Before some image uploads, a warning may encourage the user to check whether the image contains sensitive information.
These features are designed to shape use rather than provide a parent with a live feed. Study hours and quiet hours have different purposes:
- Study hours make eligible new conversations start in study mode. They do not block access, and OpenAI says they do not apply to GPT or Project conversations.
- Quiet hours can prevent ChatGPT use during scheduled periods.
Under-18 safety measures
In its August 18, 2026 announcement, OpenAI said under-18 protections address areas including self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit or graphic content. The announcement also described cues intended to reduce emotional dependence and romanticized interaction.

Those statements describe OpenAI’s design and policy commitments. They are not an independent guarantee that every response will be appropriate, that a harmful answer is impossible, or that the system can identify every crisis. A teen still needs a trusted adult or qualified professional for urgent safety concerns.

How linking works
A parent or guardian and teen link their accounts through an invitation. Either person may initiate the link, and either person can unlink later. The invitation model makes linking a shared account relationship rather than a hidden monitoring tool.
OpenAI’s current help material says the linked adult can manage selected settings. Interface labels and available controls can change, so use the options shown in the account’s current parental-controls screen rather than relying on an old screenshot or a fixed menu path.

What the parent cannot see
OpenAI’s Help Center states: “Parental controls do not let a parent or guardian read or monitor the teen’s conversations.” The same boundary covers chat history and real-time activity. Linking accounts therefore gives the adult control over selected settings without giving access to a transcript or a live status view.
Limited safety notifications
OpenAI says a linked adult may receive a notification in limited situations identified by specially trained reviewers. The documented examples include serious self-harm concerns, behavior possibly associated with disordered eating, and an account deactivation related to violence.
These notifications are not real-time monitoring and may not identify every concern. They do not include conversation transcripts or chat history. The notification can disclose that a concern and related account action were identified, but it is not a substitute for checking on a teen directly.

What happens at 18
When OpenAI identifies the account holder as 18 or older, the account can move out of the teen experience. OpenAI says teen protections and linked parental controls end and the account holder receives adult settings. The transition depends on the service’s age determination; it is not a decision a parent makes manually.
How Gemini and Family Link work
Age requirements for Gemini
Google’s Gemini mobile help says users generally must be 13 or the applicable local age. A user under 13 needs parental approval. The same material described mobile availability in more than 150 countries at the time it was accessed, while warning that country and language availability can change.
On the web, Google’s help says some Gemini features can be used without signing in. Additional features, including saving Gemini Apps activity, require a Google Account. A Family Link manager can turn off Gemini Apps access for a user under 13 or the applicable local age.
Enabling or disabling access for a supervised child
Google’s child-focused guidance says a parent can turn Gemini access on or off for a supervised child under 13 through Family Link. The exact labels can change as Google updates Family Link, so the reliable procedure is:
- Use the Family Link manager account that supervises the child.
- Open the child’s supervision controls and locate the Gemini or Gemini Apps access setting when it is available.
- Choose whether access is enabled or disabled, then confirm the change shown by Family Link.
- Have the child reopen Gemini or sign in again if the change does not appear immediately.
Access may not appear even after a parent enables it. Google says supervised Gemini access is rolling out gradually, so availability can lag behind the setting.
Filters and activity limits
Google describes filters intended to limit inappropriate content for supervised children. Its Gemini Apps Help page cautions: “Our filters try to limit inappropriate content from appearing, but they’re not perfect.” A child may still encounter material a parent would not want them to see.

The child guidance says Keep Activity is unavailable to users under 13 or the applicable local age. That statement is specific to the under-13 supervised setup. It should not be generalized to older teens, different account types, or every country.
Regional and rollout limits
Google says supervised-account access is gradually rolling out and may not yet be available even when Family Link appears to support it. It also states: “Gemini Apps are not available for supervised accounts in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.” Families in those regions should not assume that an enabled control will produce access.
What Family Link can and cannot show
Family Link is a broader Google account and device-supervision system, not a ChatGPT-style teen dashboard. Google’s general supervision guide says parents may manage certain account settings, app access, screen-time limits, device location, and content filters.
For existing accounts under the conditions described by Google, the guide says parents cannot remotely check the child’s screen, find past searches, inspect Chrome browsing history, read emails or messages, or listen to calls. Those boundaries describe the general supervision product. They do not establish that Gemini conversations are never retained, never reviewed by the provider, or never visible through a separate Gemini account feature.
For older teens, personal accounts, and different regions, the cited materials do not settle whether a parent can view Gemini prompts or replies. Check the specific account’s current Gemini and Google Account settings before promising a particular level of visibility.

Setup checklists for families
If you are using ChatGPT for Teens
- Confirm that the account is a personal Free or paid plan eligible for the teen experience.
- Review the age-related notice and the settings currently shown for the account.
- If you want shared controls, have the parent or teen send and accept the account-linking invitation.
- Review sensitive-content, model-improvement, memory, voice, image-generation, study, and quiet-hours settings one by one.
- Explain that linking does not give the adult access to chats or live activity.
- Discuss what a limited safety notification could mean and agree on how the family will respond to a concern.
- Recheck settings after major product updates or when the account holder’s age status changes.
If you are using Gemini with Family Link
- Verify the child’s age and the local minimum-age rule for the Google Account.
- For a child under 13 or the applicable local age, use the Family Link manager account to locate Gemini access controls.
- Enable or disable Gemini Apps access as appropriate, then allow time for the setting to propagate.
- Check whether the account is in a country where supervised Gemini is supported; the EEA, Switzerland, and UK are excluded in Google’s cited guidance.
- Review content filters, app permissions, screen-time rules, and other Family Link settings separately from Gemini.
- Tell the child that filters are imperfect and identify a trusted adult to contact if a response is disturbing or unsafe.
- For an older teen, inspect the current Gemini and Google Account activity settings directly rather than assuming that under-13 rules apply.
Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them
“No parent transcript access” does not mean “no company retention”
OpenAI’s parental-visibility promise answers who can see a linked teen’s chats inside the family relationship. It does not, by itself, answer every question about provider storage, model improvement, legal retention, or account security. Those are separate policy questions.

Family Link supervision is not automatically Gemini transcript access
Managing apps, screen time, location, or filters does not prove that a parent can open Gemini conversations. Google’s general supervision guide specifically lists several kinds of information parents cannot inspect. Treat Gemini chat visibility as an account-specific question unless Google documents otherwise.
Under-13 rules should not be applied to older teens
The Keep Activity statement and the strongest Gemini child-access guidance concern supervised users under 13 or the applicable local age. They do not establish how every 13-to-17-year-old account behaves.
Safety filters are not a substitute for supervision
Both companies describe safeguards, but neither promises perfect responses. A teen should know how to stop a conversation, report a problem through the service’s available tools, and contact a trusted adult when content involves self-harm, violence, sexual exploitation, dangerous activities, or other immediate risks.

Age classification, country, language, account type, and gradual rollout can change what a family sees. A setting that is documented for one account may be absent for another without indicating that the parent configured it incorrectly.

Whichever service a family uses, verify the current account settings, country eligibility, and age classification. Treat filters and safeguards as risk reduction rather than guarantees, and make a direct family agreement about what to do when an AI response is unsafe or upsetting.
