ChatGPT for Teens is an experience for eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18. A linked parent or guardian can manage selected settings and schedules, but cannot read the teen’s chats or monitor activity in real time. The controls can reduce some risks; they do not guarantee that every response will be appropriate.
Why am I seeing ChatGPT for Teens?
OpenAI may automatically place an eligible account in ChatGPT for Teens when account-provided information, age verification, or age prediction identifies the account holder as under 18. The experience includes teen protections, and some features or content may be limited. OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens guidance and its age-prediction explanation describe how age classification can affect the experience.
OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13 and requires parental consent for children ages 13 to 18. It also cautions that ChatGPT’s outputs may not suit every age. Can parents read my ChatGPT conversations?

There are limited safety notifications in certain situations. These may describe a serious concern and a related account action, but do not include the conversation transcript. The notices are not real-time monitoring, and they may not identify every concern. OpenAI describes possible notices involving serious self-harm concerns, possible disordered-eating concerns, or certain violence-related account deactivations. They should not be treated as a complete view of a teen’s wellbeing or ChatGPT use.
How do I set parental controls on ChatGPT?
Link a parent or guardian account
- In the parent or guardian’s ChatGPT account, open Settings > Parental controls > Add family member.
- Invite the teen by email or phone. Alternatively, the teen can send an invitation to a parent or guardian.
- The person receiving the invitation must accept it to link the accounts.
Once linked, either person can unlink the accounts. Linking enables the controls described below; it does not open the teen’s conversations to the parent.

Choose the controls to manage
The available controls include settings for sensitive content, data use for model improvement, saved-memory references, Voice Mode, image generation, Study mode, Study hours, and Quiet hours. ChatGPT Work accounts also have controls for cloud browser and Codex network access. Availability and defaults can vary by control, so review the current Parental controls screen rather than assuming a setting is enabled or disabled. For example, Reduce sensitive content is enabled by default, while Study mode, Study hours, and Quiet hours are disabled by default, according to OpenAI’s current help page.
Some controls affect whether a feature is available; others affect how or when eligible conversations begin. The settings do not all function as general usage limits.

What is the difference between Study mode, Study hours, and Quiet hours?

These distinctions matter if a family’s goal is to encourage study, set a routine, or prevent use during particular hours: Study hours affect the starting mode, while Quiet hours restrict use within the schedule.
What do ChatGPT safety alerts mean?
A notice means OpenAI’s systems identified a limited type of concern and may have taken an account action. The types OpenAI says may lead to a notification include serious self-harm concerns, possible disordered-eating concerns, and certain violence-related account deactivations. The notice is not a transcript or a real-time alert, and a lack of notice does not establish that no concern exists. What does Reduce sensitive content do?
OpenAI says this setting may reduce exposure to graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay, and content promoting extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting, or body shaming. No. If age verification is available, the account holder must complete it in ChatGPT through Settings > Account > Verify age. OpenAI says its verification provider, Persona, may request a selfie, government ID, or both depending on the country. If the account holder believes ChatGPT has classified their age incorrectly, they can review the age category shown for the account and use the verification option if it is available.
What happens when my teen turns 18?
When OpenAI’s system identifies the account holder as 18 or older, teen protections and the linked parental-controls connection end. The change follows the account’s age classification, so it may not happen simply on the person’s birthday if the system has not yet identified the account as 18 or older. How can families use the controls well?
OpenAI’s family guidance recommends asking teens to demonstrate how they use AI, talking about how they check answers, and agreeing on expectations. It also suggests treating AI as something that can make mistakes and encouraging teens to speak with a parent, teacher, or trusted adult about concerns, especially sensitive health, relationship, or identity questions. This is OpenAI’s family guidance, not independent clinical advice.
