Yes. ChatGPT Enterprise administrators can choose a starting default model and reasoning level for Chat, or let each member’s new chats start with that member’s last available choice. They can configure Work & Codex separately. A default only controls what starts selected; it does not give anyone access to a model they are not otherwise allowed to use.
What an administrator can set
Workspace owners and administrators configure these options in Workspace settings, including the relevant product’s Models page. The precise controls can vary with the workspace and its configuration. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise workspace settings guide.
Chat: choose an admin default or a member’s last choice
For Chat, an administrator can set a default model and reasoning level, or select User’s last choice. With that option, a new chat starts with the member’s most recent choice that is still available to them. If a saved choice is an older model, ChatGPT may promote it to the current recommended generation.
Work & Codex: configure its default separately
Chat and Work & Codex have independent starting defaults, so setting one does not automatically set the other. Where supported, Work & Codex settings may also include speed, Fast Mode availability, and role-specific overrides. Review that product’s settings rather than assuming the Chat configuration applies.

Default selection is not model access
A default determines the starting selection; it does not enable a model for a workspace or member. Access depends on workspace eligibility, model-access settings, rollout status, limits, and any role-based controls. A member’s model picker reflects the choices available to that member. OpenAI explains this distinction in its guides to role-based feature access and Enterprise and Edu models and limits.
Availability and limits can change with workspace settings and rollout status. Before telling members that a particular model will be available, check both the workspace’s current access configuration and what appears in the relevant members’ model pickers.

Set a workspace starting default
- Open Workspace settings and go to the Models settings for Chat or Work & Codex.
- For Chat, choose the administrator-selected default model and reasoning level, or choose User’s last choice if members should start new chats with their last available selection.
- For Work & Codex, review and configure its own default and any supported speed, Fast Mode, or role-specific controls.
- Separately verify that the intended model is enabled and available to the relevant members or roles. Check a member’s model picker to confirm what they can actually select.
Why a member may not see the default model
If a member cannot select the model an administrator expected, the default setting alone is not evidence that access is enabled. Check the workspace’s model-access settings, the member’s role-based controls, and whether the model is available to that workspace under current rollout and limit conditions. The member’s picker is the practical check for their available choices.
