ChatGPT and Gemini both work with web pages, but they attach to your browser in different ways. ChatGPT’s Chrome integration is designed to use the Chrome profile you already have open— including its signed-in sessions, tabs and extensions—when you install the supported Chrome extension and grant access. ChatGPT’s separate built-in desktop browser runs in its own browser state. Gemini in Chrome is a side panel inside Chrome: it shares the current tab with a new chat by default, lets you add up to 10 recent tabs, and connects browser work to Google services. Its optional auto browse feature can complete visible, multi-step tasks, but eligibility is restricted.
The practical choice is therefore about continuity versus Google-native assistance. Choose ChatGPT Chrome when the task depends on your existing Chrome login, internal sites or extensions. Choose Gemini in Chrome when you want explicit multi-tab comparison, Workspace context or Google-connected actions. For booking and other transactions, Gemini has the clearer documented automation controls, while the OpenAI documentation cited here establishes page interaction and form filling rather than identical auto-browse behavior.
At a glance: the browser difference
| Question | ChatGPT in Chrome | ChatGPT built-in desktop browser | Gemini in Chrome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | In your regular Chrome environment through the supported Chrome extension. | Inside the ChatGPT desktop app, with separate browser state. | As a Chrome side panel that stays available while you switch tabs. |
| Existing Chrome profile | Designed to use the profile, cookies, signed-in sessions, open tabs and extensions that you make available. | Does not use your normal Chrome profile; it has its own state. | Uses Chrome’s page context, with sharing controlled in the Gemini panel. |
| Tab context | Can work with browser context exposed through the extension; the exact pages available depend on permissions and the task. | Can work across multiple tabs in its own browser. | Shares the current tab by default for a new chat and allows up to 10 recent open tabs to be added. |
| Google service connections | Not the defining feature in the cited Chrome documentation. | Separate from your normal Chrome account state. | Documented connections include Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube and Workspace features. |
| Web automation | Documented examples include opening a tab, reading an internal dashboard, using page controls and filling a form after permission is granted. | Can navigate across tabs and download files inside the built-in browser. | Auto browse can compare products, search deals, add items to a cart, find and book travel, reserve restaurants and schedule appointments, subject to eligibility and takeover prompts. |
These are different product surfaces, not simply two names for the same browser plug-in. “ChatGPT Chrome” generally means ChatGPT operating through your existing Chrome context. “ChatGPT’s browser” can also mean the separate browser embedded in the desktop app. “Gemini in Chrome” means the side panel, while “Gemini auto browse” is an optional action-taking mode within that experience.

ChatGPT’s built-in desktop browser
OpenAI’s desktop browser is a browser inside the ChatGPT app. It maintains its own browser state, so it is not automatically carrying over the cookies, extensions or signed-in sessions from your everyday Chrome profile. That separation is useful when you want a clean environment or do not want an assistant operating inside a work account, but it means a site that is logged in on Chrome may ask you to authenticate again.

The built-in browser can work across multiple tabs and download files. Those tabs belong to the built-in browser, not to the Chrome window you already have open. If you need an existing Chrome session, OpenAI directs users to the supported Chrome extension instead.
ChatGPT through the Chrome extension
The Chrome integration is intended for tasks that depend on the browser you already use. OpenAI’s walkthrough describes ChatGPT starting a new tab, reading an internal dashboard, using controls on a page and filling out a form on a site where the user is already signed in. The extension must be installed, and you must approve the requested permissions.
That design answers the common question “Can ChatGPT see my open Chrome tabs?” with a qualified yes: it can work with the Chrome context that the extension exposes and that you authorize. It is not a promise that every tab is continuously sent to ChatGPT or that every page is readable regardless of permissions. The available context is tied to the extension’s access and the action you ask it to perform.

Gemini as Chrome’s side panel
Gemini in Chrome is native to the Chrome window rather than a separate browser application. The side panel remains available as you change tabs, so you can ask about the page in front of you without opening a second application. Google’s enterprise guidance describes this side-panel workflow and its ability to connect with Workspace.
When a new Gemini in Chrome chat starts, the current tab is shared by default. You can stop sharing it, add other tabs manually and review which pages are included. Google documents a limit of up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows for a chat. This explicit sharing model makes the scope easier to inspect before asking Gemini to compare pages.
How tab access actually works
ChatGPT: browser continuity first
ChatGPT’s Chrome value is continuity with the profile you are already using. If a work dashboard, customer portal or subscription site is open and authenticated in Chrome, the extension can operate in that context after you grant permission. The same principle applies to Chrome extensions that alter a page or provide a workflow the task depends on.

The trade-off is less explicit tab-count documentation in the cited OpenAI material. The documentation explains that the extension lets ChatGPT work in regular Chrome and that the built-in browser supports multiple tabs, but it does not establish a fixed maximum number of Chrome tabs that can be handed to one task. Treat tab access as task- and permission-dependent rather than assuming that every open page is available at once.

Gemini: visible, user-selected tab scope
Gemini makes tab selection part of the chat interface. A new chat starts with the current tab shared; you can remove that share and add recent tabs, up to 10. This is well suited to questions such as “compare the specifications on these product pages” or “combine the key points from these research tabs.” Because the tabs are listed as shared context, you can see which pages Gemini is meant to use before it answers.
Sharing a tab does not mean Gemini has unlimited access to everything in your account. The assistant receives the page context that Chrome makes available to the chat, while pages may still require sign-in, block automated reading or contain content that cannot be extracted reliably. If an answer depends on a page that was not shared, add that tab explicitly or start a new chat with the correct current tab.
Does ChatGPT use your existing Chrome login?
With the Chrome integration, that is the intended use case: ChatGPT can work on sites where you are already signed in to the regular browser, subject to the extension’s permissions and the site’s behavior. You do not generally need to copy a password into the chat. The browser session supplies the authenticated context while you remain responsible for approving actions.
The built-in desktop browser is different. Its state is separate, so a login saved in your normal Chrome profile is not automatically present there. You may need to sign in again inside the built-in browser, and browser extensions installed in Chrome are not assumed to be installed in that separate environment.
For sensitive accounts, check the account and tab before granting control. A task that reads a dashboard or fills a form can expose information visible in that session to the assistant. Use a dedicated profile or sign out when the job does not require your primary account.

Can Gemini compare multiple tabs?
Yes. Gemini in Chrome is specifically documented for cross-tab comparison and summarization. Start a chat on one of the relevant pages, keep the current tab shared or remove it, then add the other recent tabs you want included. You can share up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows.
- Open the pages you want Gemini to examine in Chrome.
- Open Gemini in Chrome and start a new chat from the page that should be the initial context.
- Check the shared-tab indicator. The current tab is included by default for a new chat.
- Remove any tab that should not be used, then add the remaining recent tabs manually, staying within the 10-tab limit.
- Ask for a comparison that names the fields you care about, such as price, return policy, compatibility or publication date.
Gemini’s cross-tab feature is more than a request to summarize one page at a time: Google describes it as comparing or consolidating pages. Results still depend on what each page exposes. Dynamic content, paywalls, sign-in screens and pages that change while the chat is running can produce an incomplete comparison, so verify important figures on the source tabs.
Which is better for browser automation?
Gemini auto browse: broader documented action-taking
Gemini’s optional auto browse mode is the clearest documented example of multi-step web automation among the capabilities described here. It can compare products, search for deals, add items to a cart, find and book travel, make restaurant reservations and schedule appointments.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Auto browse is designed to remain visible and interruptible. Google says you review the plan before the task starts. Gemini performs the work in the browser, pauses for sign-in, a CAPTCHA or another sensitive step, and lets you take over or stop it. That makes it an assistant that carries out a proposed sequence, not an invisible background agent with unrestricted authority.
Auto browse eligibility and limits
| Requirement or control | What Google documents |
|---|---|
| Age | You must be 18 or older. |
| Region | Available in the United States at the time of the cited help page. |
| Language | The device language must be English. |
| Account | Requires a personal Google account. |
| Plan | Requires Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra. |
| Browser | Requires a current version of Chrome. |
| Rollout | Availability is gradual, so meeting the listed conditions does not guarantee immediate access. |
| Unsupported contexts | Not available in Incognito and, on the cited page, not available on iPhone or iPad. |
| User control | Review the plan first; pause for sign-in or CAPTCHA; take over or stop the task. |
Because auto browse can reach checkout, booking and scheduling pages, review the final details yourself. Confirm dates, names, quantities, prices, cancellation terms and payment information after any takeover prompt. A capability to add an item to a cart is not the same as permission to complete a purchase without your approval.
What ChatGPT’s Chrome documentation establishes
The OpenAI Chrome walkthrough documents practical page interaction: opening a new tab, reading an internal dashboard, using controls and filling out a form after the extension is installed and permissions are approved. That is meaningful browser control, especially when the page requires your existing login.

The cited OpenAI material does not establish the same auto-browse eligibility, booking flow or standardized takeover behavior described for Gemini. It would therefore be inaccurate to promise that ChatGPT Chrome can autonomously complete every travel, shopping or scheduling task. For a task that involves a logged-in business system or a form in your normal profile, ChatGPT’s continuity may be the deciding advantage; for a visible, plan-first sequence across consumer sites, Gemini has the more explicit documented workflow.
Google services and account workflows
Gemini in Chrome is strongest when the browser task touches Google’s ecosystem. Google documents integrations and workflows involving Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube and Workspace. Examples include drafting Gmail messages, checking or using calendar information, working with Maps or YouTube context, and using a side panel while moving among tabs.
Those connections can reduce copying between applications, but they also increase the importance of account boundaries. A work profile, personal profile and managed Workspace account may expose different tools or policies. If an integration is missing, check which Google account is active, whether the administrator allows the feature and whether the feature has reached your account during the rollout.
ChatGPT Chrome is not positioned in the cited material as a Google-service side panel. Its distinctive benefit is access to the pages, sessions and extensions already present in Chrome, regardless of whether the site is an internal dashboard, a web application or a public article.
Setup: using ChatGPT with your existing Chrome profile
- Install the supported Chrome extension described in OpenAI’s browser documentation.
- Sign in to the Chrome profile that contains the site, tabs or extensions needed for the task.
- Approve the extension permissions. Read what browser access is being requested before accepting.
- Open the target page and confirm that the correct account and workspace are active.
- Give ChatGPT a bounded instruction, such as reading a dashboard, navigating to a specific control or filling named fields in a form.
- Watch the page as it works. Review values before submitting anything, especially forms that change records, send messages or create orders.
If ChatGPT cannot see the page, first check that the extension is enabled for that tab, the site is not blocking access and the requested permission was approved. If the task needs a Chrome extension or a saved session, do not switch to the built-in desktop browser expecting that state to follow you.

Setup: using Gemini in Chrome
- Use a current Chrome desktop installation and sign in with the Google account whose pages or services you want to use.
- Open Gemini in Chrome as a side panel.
- Start a chat from the page you want as the initial context. A new chat shares the current tab by default.
- Review the shared-tab list. Stop sharing the current tab if it is not relevant, then add other recent tabs manually, up to 10.
- Ask for a focused summary, comparison or action. Name the criteria and the desired output so the assistant does not treat every page detail as equally important.
- For auto browse, read the proposed plan before starting. Take over when Gemini pauses for sign-in, CAPTCHA or another sensitive step, and stop the task if the plan changes.
If tab comparison is incomplete, confirm that every page is among the shared tabs and that the pages are still open. If auto browse is missing, check age, United States availability, English device language, personal-account status, Google AI Pro or Ultra eligibility, current Chrome and rollout status. Incognito and the cited iPhone or iPad experience are not supported for auto browse.

Privacy, permissions and failure points
Keep the scope narrow
Share only the tabs needed for the question. In Gemini, the explicit tab list makes this straightforward: remove unrelated pages before asking for a comparison. In ChatGPT Chrome, use a dedicated window or profile when a task involves sensitive work, and avoid leaving unrelated authenticated tabs exposed to an action-oriented instruction.
Expect sign-in and CAPTCHA pauses
Automation cannot reliably bypass every identity or anti-bot check. Gemini auto browse is designed to pause for these steps so you can take over. ChatGPT’s Chrome workflow similarly depends on the session and controls that the page permits; a form may still require your direct confirmation or an additional verification step.
Verify dynamic and high-impact results
Prices, inventory, appointment times, account balances and dashboard data can change while an assistant is working. Treat an assistant’s extracted value as a working result until you check the live page. Before submitting, booking or scheduling, verify the final page rather than relying on an earlier summary.
Separate browser state when you want isolation
Use ChatGPT’s built-in browser when you specifically want a separate browser state and do not need the cookies or extensions from Chrome. Use the Chrome integration when continuity is the requirement. Confusing these two modes is a common reason a site appears logged out or a needed extension is missing.
Which one should you choose?
| Your priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Use an existing login on an internal web app | ChatGPT Chrome | It is designed to operate in the regular Chrome profile after permissions are granted. |
| Keep Chrome extensions available | ChatGPT Chrome | The workflow uses the browser environment where those extensions are installed. |
| Compare several research or shopping pages | Gemini in Chrome | The current tab is shared by default and up to 10 recent tabs can be selected explicitly. |
| Draft or coordinate work involving Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube or Workspace | Gemini in Chrome | Those Google connections are documented parts of the Chrome experience. |
| Have an assistant propose and execute a visible booking or shopping sequence | Gemini auto browse, if eligible | It has documented plan review, takeover, pause and stop controls, plus examples covering travel, carts, reservations and appointments. |
| Work in an isolated browser state | ChatGPT built-in desktop browser | It runs inside the ChatGPT app rather than inheriting your normal Chrome profile. |
| Download files while navigating across assistant-managed tabs | ChatGPT built-in desktop browser | OpenAI documents multi-tab work and file downloads in that browser. |
For many people, the decision is task-specific rather than permanent. Use ChatGPT Chrome for a logged-in work portal, Gemini in Chrome for a ten-tab comparison or Google Workspace workflow, and the built-in ChatGPT browser when isolation matters. Keep the assistant’s access limited to the pages and actions required for the job.
The bottom line
ChatGPT Chrome is about using your existing Chrome environment: its profile, sessions, open pages and extensions, with access granted through the extension. Gemini in Chrome is about an explicit side-panel relationship with your tabs and Google services: the current tab is shared by default, up to 10 recent tabs can be added, and Workspace-related workflows are built into the experience. Gemini auto browse goes further for eligible US users by carrying out visible, multi-step web tasks with review and takeover controls. Neither approach is universally better; match the assistant to whether your priority is session continuity, tab comparison, Google integration or documented automation.
