ChatGPT does not automatically browse your complete iMessage history through Apple’s documented integration. On a supported iPhone, you can enable Apple’s optional ChatGPT extension and choose what to send when using supported Apple Intelligence features. That distinction matters: Apple Intelligence can also summarize Messages conversations and suggest replies without those features being evidence that ChatGPT received your chat history.
The headline describes a personal experience, but no specific sharing method or firsthand result is established here. Rather than inventing an export, prompt, or outcome, this guide explains what Apple and OpenAI document, how the integration works, and what its privacy settings mean.
Can ChatGPT read your iMessage conversations?
Not automatically, according to the Apple and OpenAI documentation described here. Apple’s ChatGPT extension is optional and off by default. Apple says you choose what content to send to ChatGPT; the documentation does not describe granting it unrestricted access to the Messages database or the ability to scan your entire iMessage archive.

Apple’s privacy page states: “Before any information is sent to ChatGPT, you must enable the ChatGPT extension. This extension is off by default.” Apple says the request and any attachments, along with limited context such as your time zone, country, device type, language, and feature used, are sent to ChatGPT when you use the extension. This describes the supported Apple integration, not a general permission for ChatGPT to read all messages. Apple’s ChatGPT Extension & Privacy statement is dated September 14, 2026.

How the Apple ChatGPT extension works
Apple documents ChatGPT as an option within supported Apple Intelligence experiences, including Siri, Writing Tools, and visual intelligence. To set it up on iPhone, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. Apple says you can enable the extension without a ChatGPT account or sign in to an existing account. What happens when Siri uses ChatGPT
Siri may ask before sending a request to ChatGPT. Apple says you can turn off confirmation for requests, but it still asks before sending photos or files. You can disable the extension in the same ChatGPT settings area. A request routed through Siri is not the same as giving ChatGPT ongoing access to Messages.

What sharing a conversation would require
If you want ChatGPT to help with a particular exchange, the documented privacy model points to a user-initiated request and content you choose to send. The sources cited here do not establish one universal method for exporting, importing, or transferring an iMessage conversation into ChatGPT. The actual steps depend on how you share the content, so do not assume that enabling the extension transfers existing conversations.

Apple also offers Apple Intelligence features in Messages, including summaries of unread conversations and Smart Reply suggestions. These are Apple Intelligence features; their presence does not show that ChatGPT received the conversation. What happens to your data depends on account status
Using Apple integrations without signing in
OpenAI says that when you use ChatGPT through Apple integrations without logging in to a ChatGPT account, it processes requests to provide a response and comply with applicable laws. OpenAI says it does not receive your IP address, store those requests, or use them to train its models. In OpenAI’s words: “If you use ChatGPT through Apple’s integrations without logging into a ChatGPT account, your ChatGPT conversations are only processed by OpenAI to provide you with a safe response and comply with applicable laws.” See OpenAI’s explanation of data handling for Apple integrations.
Using a connected ChatGPT account
If you connect an account, its data preferences apply. Interactions may be saved in ChatGPT history, and whether they may be used to improve models depends on your account settings. OpenAI describes Temporary Chat in its ChatGPT apps or website as not being saved to the account or used to improve models. If you continue the exchange in ChatGPT itself rather than within Apple’s integration, OpenAI says that interaction is handled under its Privacy Policy.

What Apple says it handles
Apple says it obscures your IP address from ChatGPT and provides general location for fraud prevention and legal compliance. Apple also collects limited information, such as request counts and approximate request and response size, for operating the service and preventing fraud. So the integration is not accurately described as “no data is sent” or “Apple never sees anything.” The details are in Apple’s privacy statement.

Availability depends on more than enabling the setting
The setup instructions apply to Apple’s supported iPhone and Apple Intelligence features. Availability varies by device support, language, region, and ChatGPT service availability. Apple’s Messages guide notes that Apple Intelligence is not available on every iPhone, language, or region; the existence of a setting or feature on one device does not guarantee that it is available to every user.
