ChatGPT is OpenAI’s conversational AI service; GPT is the name for a category of language model. A GPT model can power a ChatGPT conversation, but the two terms are not interchangeable. OpenAI also uses “GPT” for custom assistants configured inside ChatGPT, which is a separate meaning.
What’s the difference between ChatGPT and GPT?
ChatGPT is the product people use to ask questions, give instructions, and work with available AI models and tools. GPT refers to a kind of model that processes a prompt and generates text. In short, ChatGPT is the service; a GPT model is one type of technology that may be used within it.
The distinction is similar to the difference between an app and the engine it uses: the app provides the user-facing experience, while the model handles a part of the underlying work. ChatGPT’s available models and tools can vary by account, settings, and time, so it is not accurate to say every ChatGPT session uses one fixed GPT model.
What does GPT stand for?
GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer. OpenAI uses “GPT models” to describe text-generation models trained to understand language and produce text in response to prompts. “Generative” describes producing content, “pre-trained” refers to training that happens before a model is used for a particular prompt, and “transformer” names the model architecture.

What does ChatGPT refer to?
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI assistant and service. People can use it for tasks such as brainstorming, writing, studying, planning, math, coding, and analyzing images or files. Which capabilities are available depends on the account, product settings, and current offering.
When someone says they are “using ChatGPT,” they usually mean the service or its web and app experience—not the name of a particular model. Model names and access in ChatGPT are distinct from the model catalog and access used by developers through OpenAI’s API.

What is a custom GPT?
OpenAI also calls purpose-configured assistants inside ChatGPT “GPTs” or “custom GPTs.” A custom GPT can combine instructions, knowledge, and selected capabilities for a particular task. It is a configured assistant within ChatGPT, not another name for the whole ChatGPT service and not a synonym for every GPT model.

OpenAI describes these GPTs as no-code assistants built and used inside ChatGPT. They differ from API integrations: those are developer-built applications or features that use OpenAI models outside the ChatGPT interface.

| Term | What it means | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI’s user-facing AI assistant and service | ChatGPT’s web and app experiences, subject to availability |
| GPT model | A generative pre-trained transformer model that processes prompts and generates text | ChatGPT, API products, and other integrations, depending on model access |
| Custom GPT | A ChatGPT assistant configured for a particular purpose | Inside ChatGPT; access depends on plan and workspace rules |
| API-built assistant | A developer-built integration using OpenAI models | Outside ChatGPT, such as in an external application or service |
Can you create a custom GPT?
As described in OpenAI’s help documentation checked October 7, 2026, personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts cannot create or publish new GPTs. Access in Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces depends on workspace settings and the user’s permissions.
OpenAI’s documentation also describes planned changes to custom GPTs. It names December 11, 2026 as the planned retirement date for affected Enterprise workspaces and says other plans are expected to follow. The page describes a migration experience targeted for September 17, 2026; because these are documented plans and account rules can change, check OpenAI’s current help information and your workspace settings before relying on a date or eligibility detail.

Are ChatGPT and GPT the same thing?
No. ChatGPT is the service; GPT usually refers to a model category. The term can also mean a custom assistant inside ChatGPT, so context matters. If someone says “a GPT,” ask whether they mean a GPT model or a custom GPT.
