Choose CHAT if you specifically want an actively managed generative-AI and technology theme; choose FTEC if you want index-based exposure across U.S. information-technology companies of different sizes. FTEC’s disclosed annual expenses are far lower, but neither fund is a whole-market portfolio—and the available figures do not establish which has performed better through a common recent date.
What you are buying with each ETF
CHAT: an active generative-AI and technology strategy
Roundhill describes CHAT as an actively managed generative AI and technology ETF. Its Investment Committee selects securities, so the portfolio reflects an active strategy rather than a fixed index. Roundhill’s fund page lists Nvidia, SK hynix, Alphabet, Knowledge Atlas Technology, and Advanced Micro Devices as its five largest holdings on June 30, 2026. Those are dated holdings, not a promise about what the fund will own later; the issuer says holdings and allocations may change.
CHAT began trading on May 18, 2023. Roundhill also states that options trading is available. These details describe the fund’s history and trading features, not whether it is suitable for a particular investor.

FTEC: index exposure within U.S. information technology
Fidelity’s November 29, 2025 summary prospectus says FTEC seeks returns corresponding, before fees and expenses, generally to the MSCI USA IMI Information Technology 25/50 Index. Fidelity’s March 31, 2026 fact sheet says the fund uses representative sampling and normally invests at least 80% of assets in index securities.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The index covers U.S. large-, mid-, and small-cap companies classified in the Information Technology sector under GICS. That gives FTEC a wider company-size range within the sector than a targeted AI strategy, but it does not make FTEC a broad U.S. stock-market fund: its stated scope is information technology, not all sectors.
How the costs compare
The available disclosures list CHAT’s gross expense ratio at 0.75% on Roundhill’s fund page, accessed October 7, 2026. Fidelity Covington Trust’s November 29, 2025 summary prospectus lists FTEC’s total annual operating expenses at 0.084%. The figures use different fee labels and come from documents with different dates, so check each fund’s latest prospectus before investing.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The difference is substantial: all else equal, a higher expense ratio reduces the portion of a fund’s returns that remains for investors. But a lower fee alone does not determine whether FTEC’s index exposure or CHAT’s active theme is the right match for an intended portfolio allocation.
Where their diversification differs—and where it does not
FTEC’s index spans companies of different sizes, while CHAT concentrates on an actively selected generative-AI and technology theme. That is a meaningful distinction in strategy and breadth. It is not a choice between a diversified whole-market fund and a concentrated sector fund: FTEC remains confined to U.S. information technology, and CHAT is narrower by theme.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Fidelity Covington Trust’s July 31, 2026 schedule of investments reports that FTEC held common stocks equal to 99.9% of net assets and that communications equipment accounted for 4.3%. These figures describe FTEC’s portfolio on that date; they are not a directly comparable concentration measure against CHAT. A like-for-like comparison would require both funds’ holdings and weights on the same date and consistent definitions.
Risks to weigh before choosing
- Technology-sector exposure: Both funds are equity investments tied to technology-sector fortunes. Neither avoids the possibility that technology shares fall together.
- Fast change and competition: Roundhill flags risks from rapid technological change, product obsolescence, regulation, and competition for technology companies. A company’s connection to AI does not guarantee it will benefit from AI adoption.
- Active selection versus index exposure: CHAT’s committee-selected portfolio can differ from an index and depends on active security selection. FTEC’s representative sampling seeks to track its stated index, but index-based exposure remains subject to the index’s sector scope and composition.
- Theme and concentration: A focused AI-and-technology strategy can behave differently from a broader information-technology basket. The available dated holdings do not support a precise same-date comparison of the funds’ concentration.
Which fund may fit your objective?
| Investor objective | Closer fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Target an actively managed generative-AI and technology theme | CHAT | Its mandate is AI- and technology-focused, with securities selected by the Investment Committee. |
| Track a U.S. information-technology index across company sizes | FTEC | Its benchmark covers U.S. large-, mid-, and small-cap IT companies, and the fund uses representative sampling. |
| Keep disclosed annual fund expenses lower | FTEC, based on the cited disclosures | Fidelity’s 2025 prospectus lists 0.084% total annual operating expenses, compared with Roundhill’s 0.75% gross expense ratio for CHAT. The labels and document dates differ. |
| Get exposure across the entire U.S. stock market | Neither | FTEC is limited to information technology, while CHAT targets a still narrower theme. |
Can the evidence identify a better performer right now?
No. The available information does not provide comparable total returns through the same end date, so it cannot support a current performance winner. To make that comparison, use matched periods ending on the same date, include reinvested distributions, and identify the benchmark clearly. Holdings snapshots and expense ratios are not substitutes for synchronized return data.

The practical choice is therefore about intended exposure, portfolio construction, and cost—not a claim that one fund has recently outperformed. Review current fund documents and holdings before acting, since allocations, fees, and market data can change.
