Saved memory and chat-history reference are different ways an AI assistant can carry context into a new conversation. Saved memory keeps selected or synthesized details in a reusable form; chat-history reference can draw relevant information directly from earlier conversations. Each platform handles those sources, controls, and deletion separately, so deleting a conversation or turning off a setting may not erase every related detail. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google help documentation available on October 13, 2026 describes these distinctions; features and availability can vary by account, plan, region, app surface, rollout, and workspace policy.
What’s the difference between chat history and saved memory?
Saved memory is information an assistant retains as a reusable representation, such as a preference or a useful detail about a person or project. It can be explicitly requested by the user or selected by the assistant as useful context. A new conversation may use that information without searching through the original conversation where it first appeared.
Chat-history reference means the assistant can use or retrieve relevant information from earlier conversations. The previous chats remain the underlying source; the assistant need not turn every useful sentence into a distinct saved-memory item. Depending on the product, this can happen as background personalization, through a search the user requests, or through a feature that must be enabled.

These mechanisms can coexist. An assistant might use a saved preference for a familiar response style and also consult an older conversation for the details of a plan discussed there. Neither mechanism is the same as simply displaying a list of past conversations, and neither should be assumed to operate the same way across products.

The table describes documented feature behavior, not a guarantee that every account has every control. Confirm the current settings and feature availability in the account and product surface you actually use.
When does an assistant use saved information or earlier chats?
Saved memory is a selected, reusable representation
OpenAI describes ChatGPT saved memories as details a user explicitly asks it to remember or that it saves as useful context when the behavior is available. Those details are kept separately from chat history. This separation matters: the memory is not simply the original chat copied into a new conversation, and removing one does not necessarily remove the other.
Memory can be useful when a fact applies across many conversations: for example, a recurring preference, an ongoing project, or a detail the user does not want to explain repeatedly. A saved representation is selective, however. It should not be treated as a complete, verbatim archive or as proof that the assistant will recall every detail accurately.
Chat-history reference can draw from the original conversation
OpenAI says that when Reference chat history is included in a user’s settings, enabling it lets ChatGPT use relevant information from past conversations to personalize future responses. It also distinguishes these insights from saved memories: information drawn from chat history can change as the system updates what it considers useful. A person therefore may notice continuity even when a specific fact is not visible as a saved-memory entry.
Claude documents a more explicit retrieval interaction: “You can prompt Claude to search through your previous conversations to find relevant information across sessions and reference specific details when needed.” When it searches, the user sees a tool call and citations linking to the originating chats. That makes the source of retrieved context more inspectable than a response that simply feels personalized, though it does not mean every answer will search automatically.
Gemini’s personalization with memory of past Gemini chats uses earlier Gemini conversations under its stated conditions. Google also documents that a text chat can reference a past Gemini Live conversation. This is a feature for using prior Gemini interactions, not a claim that Gemini automatically has access to every conversation or data source in a Google account.

These are personalization features, not a universal data switch
A response can be influenced by more than one kind of context, and controls for personalization should not be confused with controls for safety retention or model training. The product documentation cited here does not establish that disabling memory disables all other data processing or retention. In particular, OpenAI’s Temporary Chat documentation describes a safety-related copy retention window, while its ordinary memory controls address personalization. Read the description of each control rather than assuming one toggle governs every purpose.
OpenAI’s product overview recorded an April 10, 2025 update saying ChatGPT had become more comprehensive in memory and, in addition to saved memories, referenced all past conversations to provide more relevant responses. That dated statement explains a product change at that time; it is not a promise that every account has the same current behavior or settings in 2026.
How do ChatGPT’s history and memory controls work?
ChatGPT separates saved memories from Reference chat history. Both can affect future answers, but they have different control and deletion implications. OpenAI Help Center documentation states: “Saved memories are details that you explicitly ask ChatGPT to remember or that ChatGPT saves as useful context when that behavior is available.”
Choose a temporary conversation before sending the first message
Temporary Chat has a choice between Personalized and Unpersonalized before the first message. In Unpersonalized mode, the chat does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins. Personalized mode can use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. Neither option creates or updates memories while the conversation remains temporary. This gives the user a choice about whether existing personalization applies, not a choice to create new persistent memory within that temporary session.
OpenAI says it may retain a copy of a Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety. That period applies to the safety copy described for Temporary Chat; it should not be read as a general retention period for all chats or all account data. If the user saves the chat, it changes to a regular conversation and ordinary account settings apply.

OpenAI says turning off Reference chat history schedules remembered information from past chats for deletion from its systems within 30 days. The original conversations remain unless the user deletes them separately. Turning off this reference does not delete saved memories, so users who want to remove a particular detail may need to address both the memory and the source conversation.

For a full removal effort, consider every place the information could be held or accessed: saved-memory controls, the originating conversation, archived chats, Library files, and connected apps where relevant. The exact controls depend on the account. Deleting just the chat may leave a separately stored memory; deleting a memory may leave the source conversation intact.
Can Claude search previous conversations?
Yes. Claude’s Help Center documents searching previous conversations to find relevant information across sessions. When it performs a search, it shows a tool call and citations linking to the original chats. This helps distinguish a retrieved detail from a saved summary, because the user can inspect which conversation Claude referenced.
Use account-level or per-chat memory controls
Claude provides an account memory setting and allows the user to switch memory off for one conversation before sending its first message. A chat with memory switched off still remains in chat history and may be found by searches initiated from other chats. Therefore, the per-chat memory choice should not be treated as an exclusion from future retrieval.
Incognito chats are different: they are not saved to chat history and are excluded from later past-chat search. That exclusion is specific to the documented Incognito behavior; check the current interface and organization settings before relying on it for a particular account.
Memory and conversation deletion are separate actions
Claude’s memory can be reviewed, edited, or deleted in its memory controls or through a chat. The Help Center describes experiences in which deleting the underlying conversation and deleting a memory item are distinct controls. It would be unsafe to assume that deleting one object always erases every derived representation across all accounts or legacy configurations; inspect both controls if a specific detail needs to be removed.
Memory and past-chat search may vary with rollout, plan, platform, and organization settings. In a managed workspace, the organization’s policies can affect what is available, so an individual account’s instructions may not match a personal-account guide.

Does Gemini remember past chats automatically?
Gemini can personalize using past Gemini chats through its documented “personalization with memory of your past Gemini chats” feature, but the feature has explicit eligibility conditions. Google states that the user must be at least 18, signed into a personal Google Account, and have Keep Activity turned on. It is not available for work, school, or supervised accounts, and is unavailable in some product surfaces, including Gems and Live chats. A text chat can still reference a past Gemini Live conversation.

Check both the account type and the surface where the conversation is happening. Feature rollout and regional availability can also change, so a missing control does not necessarily mean the account is configured incorrectly.
Check whether a response used past chats
Google’s suggested check is direct: “To check if Gemini used your past chats, just ask Gemini, ‘Did you use any info from past chats?’” This is a useful way to ask about a particular response, although it is not a replacement for reviewing the account’s Personal Intelligence settings when changing the feature itself.
Account for connected apps when removing context
Gemini’s documentation warns that information may also be available through a connected app. If the user deletes only the relevant chat, the connected source may still provide the information; if the user disconnects only the app, the chat can remain. Google instructs users to delete relevant chats and disconnect the connected app when both sources need to be addressed. Google also notes that deletion may take a short delay to affect personalization.

It can, depending on the assistant and where the information is stored. A chat, a saved-memory item, a generated summary, and a connected-app source are separate objects in the documented systems. Deleting one does not universally erase the others, and the resulting behavior differs by platform.

Deletion and disabling are also different. Turning off a feature can stop future use of one source while leaving stored data in place; deleting an item can remove that item without changing other settings. OpenAI’s documented “within 30 days” schedule concerns remembered information from past chats after Reference chat history is turned off, not a universal erasure clock. Its “up to 30 days” Temporary Chat copy is a separate safety-retention statement.

How do I stop an AI assistant from using past chats?
Start by identifying which behavior you want to stop: ongoing personalization from previous conversations, use of a saved detail, retrieval of source chats, or all access to a connected source. A single setting may not control all of them. The product labels and paths can change, so use the account’s current privacy, personalization, memory, and activity controls as the source of truth.
- Check account eligibility and workspace policy. Confirm that the feature exists for your plan, region, account type, product surface, and organization. This is particularly important for Gemini’s personal-account and Keep Activity requirements and for Claude or ChatGPT workspace controls.
- Turn off the relevant ongoing feature. In ChatGPT, distinguish Reference chat history from saved memories; disabling history reference does not clear saved memories. In Claude, distinguish its account memory setting from search over chats that remain in history. In Gemini, use the Memory control in Personal Intelligence settings if the feature is available.
- Choose a per-chat mode before typing, when offered. ChatGPT Temporary Chat offers Personalized or Unpersonalized before the first message. Claude lets users switch memory off for a specific chat before the first message. These options are not interchangeable: Claude’s chat may still be in history and searchable, while ChatGPT Temporary Chat has its own retention and save-to-regular-chat behavior.
- Remove particular stored details separately. Review and delete saved-memory items if the goal is to remove a fact, not merely to stop future chat-history reference. For a source conversation, delete the relevant chat as a separate action. Also consider archived conversations and files where the platform’s documentation identifies them as possible sources.
- Disconnect other sources where applicable. If Gemini used a connected app, handle both the relevant chats and the connection. Otherwise the remaining source may still make information available.
- Allow for documented processing delays and verify. OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days after Reference chat history is turned off. Google says deletion may take a short delay to affect Gemini personalization. Check the relevant account controls again and, for Gemini, ask whether a response used information from past chats.
Do not interpret a memory toggle as a universal privacy, retention, or training control. If your goal concerns data use beyond personalization, consult the platform’s separate controls and current privacy documentation for that purpose.
Which approach is more transparent or controllable?
There is no single winner across all accounts because the features answer different needs. A visible saved-memory list can make selected details easier to inspect and edit. Search with citations can make the source of a particular answer easier to trace. Background personalization can reduce repeated explanations, but may be less obvious when a past conversation—not a visible memory item—shapes a response.
- Prefer a reusable memory when a compact, recurring preference or stable detail should carry forward without reopening the original discussion. Review the saved representation periodically rather than treating it as a full transcript.
- Prefer source-chat retrieval when the exact context matters, such as locating what was decided in an earlier planning conversation. A citation or visible search call can help verify the source when the product provides one.
- Use a temporary or per-chat option when the current conversation should not create or use persistent context, but read precisely what the mode excludes and whether the conversation remains in history.
- Use separate deletion steps when the aim is to remove a detail rather than merely stop personalization. Search for copies or connected sources identified by the service, then address each applicable object.
Official OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google help documentation available on October 13, 2026 does not provide a comparable cross-assistant recall-accuracy statistic, memory-capacity comparison, or standardized test. It is therefore not possible to rank ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini by a defensible numerical measure of how reliably they remember. The practical comparison is about mechanism, visibility, eligibility, and control—not an unsupported score.
What to check in your own account
- Is the setting about saved memory, chat-history reference, search, or a connected app?
- Is it enabled for this account and this specific app surface?
- Can you inspect or edit a saved representation, or see citations to source conversations?
- Does a per-chat mode stop memory only, or also keep the chat out of later history search?
- Will deleting the chat also remove a saved memory, or must those be removed separately?
- Does your account require a particular age, account type, activity setting, plan, region, or workspace permission?
- Does the service document a delay or safety-related retention period, and does that period apply to the exact data item you are concerned about?
