Fidelity is usually the better choice for long-term investors who make small recurring purchases, want $1 fractional investing, prefer Fidelity’s zero-expense-ratio index mutual funds, or keep substantial cash in the account. Charles Schwab is compelling when you value a broad mutual-fund marketplace, Schwab’s service ecosystem and tools, or access to futures.

Both brokers offer $0 online commissions on many common trades and no retail account minimums, so the better choice depends on the exact funds you will buy, how your cash is handled, your account type, and the service you expect. Compare those details before opening or transferring an account.

Quick verdict

For a straightforward buy-and-hold portfolio, either broker can work well. Fidelity has the clearest edge for investors starting with very small amounts or automating frequent purchases. Schwab has the stronger case for investors who want the breadth of its Mutual Fund OneSource marketplace, prefer its branch and service model, or need futures access.

Decision factor Fidelity Charles Schwab What it means for a long-term investor
Retail account fees and minimums $0 account fees and $0 minimums, according to Fidelity’s current pricing page No account or trade minimums, according to Charles Schwab’s current pricing material Neither requires a large opening balance for a standard retail brokerage account.
Online stock and ETF commissions $0 for online U.S. stock and ETF trades $0 online base commission for stocks and ETFs Commission cost rarely decides between them for ordinary U.S. buy-and-hold trades.
Fractional investing As little as $1 per fractional transaction; Fidelity’s comparison page lists a $1 minimum transaction value Specific fractional-share minimums and eligibility depend on the security and Schwab program Fidelity is easier to use when every contribution is small or you want to invest a precise dollar amount.
Proprietary index funds Includes Fidelity funds marketed as ZERO expense ratio index funds and no-minimum Fidelity mutual funds Offers a broad marketplace, including thousands of funds through Mutual Fund OneSource Compare the exact fund, expense ratio, transaction fee and portability before choosing.
Uninvested cash A 2026 broker comparison gives Fidelity an edge for uninvested-cash yield Yield depends on the selected core or sweep arrangement Check the current default core position and rate rather than relying on a permanent ranking.
Investment selection Broad stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds and CDs Schwab’s Mutual Fund OneSource provides access to thousands of funds; a 2026 comparison characterized Schwab’s overall selection as slightly larger Schwab may be preferable if a specific mutual fund or marketplace feature is central to your plan.
Futures Not the deciding feature in the comparison Futures access was identified as a Schwab advantage in the 2026 comparison Choose Schwab only if this capability fits your risk plan; it is unnecessary for a conventional index portfolio.

What the $0 headline actually covers

“Commission-free” does not mean every investing cost disappears. Fidelity states $0 online commissions for U.S. stocks, ETFs and options, along with $0 retail account fees and minimums. Schwab states $0 online base commissions for stocks and ETFs and no account or trade minimums. These are useful starting points, not a complete cost comparison.

Costs that can still apply

  • Fund expense ratios: Every mutual fund or ETF has operating expenses unless the fund specifically has a zero expense ratio. A fund’s expense ratio is deducted from its assets, so you do not receive a separate bill.
  • Bid-ask spreads: The difference between the price at which you can buy and sell is a real trading cost, particularly for thinly traded securities.
  • Transaction fees: Some mutual funds, including funds outside a broker’s preferred network, may carry transaction fees. Confirm the fee for the exact fund and share class.
  • Options and fixed income charges: A $0 stock commission does not establish that options contracts, bonds or CDs are free. Fidelity’s published figures include $1 per bond or CD for secondary-market trades and free online U.S. Treasury trades; verify current charges for the order you intend to place.
  • Advisory fees: A managed portfolio or planning service can charge an asset-based or other advisory fee even when self-directed trades are commission-free.
  • Regulatory and service charges: Regulatory assessments, wire fees, transfer fees or paper-statement charges can apply under particular circumstances.

For a long-term investor, a recurring expense ratio can matter more than a one-time commission. Calculate the annual dollar cost of the funds you expect to hold, then examine cash yield and any advisory fee.

Where Fidelity is strongest

Small recurring purchases and fractional shares

Fidelity says investors can “invest in fractional shares with as little as $1” on its brokerage-account page. Its comparison material lists a $1 minimum transaction value. That makes it practical to invest a fixed dollar amount every week or month, even when a full share of an ETF costs hundreds of dollars.

Fractional investing is most useful when contributions are irregular, you are starting with a small balance, or you want every dollar invested instead of waiting for enough cash to buy a whole share. Confirm which securities are eligible and how fractional positions are handled if you later transfer the account; fractional positions may not transfer in the same way as whole shares.

Zero-expense-ratio index mutual funds

Fidelity’s materials identify its ZERO expense ratio index funds and no-minimum Fidelity mutual funds. A zero expense ratio can reduce the ongoing drag on a long holding period, but it does not automatically make a fund the best choice. Check the index methodology, diversification, tax characteristics, trading rules and whether the fund can be transferred to another broker.

Proprietary mutual funds are different from portable ETFs. If you move a taxable account to another brokerage, an ETF or widely available mutual fund may be easier to keep than a proprietary fund that the receiving firm does not support. Selling an appreciated fund in a taxable account can create a capital-gains tax bill, so evaluate portability before buying solely for a lower expense ratio.

Cash-management flexibility

A 2026 broker comparison gives Fidelity an edge for uninvested-cash yield. The practical result depends on the core position selected for your account, the prevailing rate and whether the balance is held in a bank sweep or a money-market fund. Rates and sweep rules change, so inspect the current account disclosures rather than treating an old yield comparison as permanent.

Fidelity can be a good fit when you keep cash between investments, maintain an emergency reserve in the brokerage ecosystem, or want automatic investing that moves idle cash into your selected funds. Confirm liquidity, settlement timing, insurance structure and the steps required to change the core position.

Where Charles Schwab is strongest

Broad mutual-fund marketplace

Charles Schwab’s Mutual Fund OneSource provides access to thousands of funds. The breadth can matter if your employer plan, tax strategy or existing portfolio uses a particular mutual fund rather than a commonly traded ETF. A 2026 comparison characterized Schwab’s overall investment selection as slightly larger than Fidelity’s and identified futures access as an additional Schwab advantage.

Marketplace size is not the same as free availability. Before purchasing, check whether the fund is in OneSource, whether a transaction fee applies, the minimum initial and subsequent investment, and whether automatic purchases are supported. Compare the fund’s expense ratio with an equivalent ETF or index fund available at either broker.

Service ecosystem and tools

Schwab’s appeal may be strongest for investors who value its service model, branch access or Schwab-specific research and planning tools. Those features are personal rather than numerical: a nearby branch, a preferred phone-support experience or a particular planning workflow can be worth more than a small difference in fund expenses.

Do not choose a broker because it offers more active-trading tools if you intend to hold a simple diversified portfolio. Extra charting, order types or futures capability can add complexity without improving a disciplined long-term plan.

Choosing by account type

Taxable brokerage account

For a taxable buy-and-hold account, compare three items before opening: the exact securities, cash treatment and tax consequences of transferring existing holdings. Broad-market ETFs are generally portable, while proprietary mutual funds may not be. If you will invest a fixed small dollar amount, Fidelity’s $1 fractional-share minimum can reduce uninvested cash. If you need a specific mutual fund available through OneSource, Schwab may be more convenient.

Also compare tax-lot controls, dividend-reinvestment settings and the process for transferring assets in kind. These operational details can affect taxes and realized gains more than a small difference in trading commissions.

Traditional or Roth IRA

In an IRA, selling an investment generally does not create the same immediate capital-gains tax event as selling in a taxable account, but fund expenses, trading costs and cash yield still affect long-term results. Fidelity’s low-dollar automation and proprietary index funds may suit regular contributions. Schwab’s marketplace breadth and service preferences may matter more if you already use a particular mutual fund or want consolidated support.

Review beneficiary designations, contribution processing, required-minimum-distribution support for traditional IRAs, and the procedure for moving an IRA by trustee-to-trustee transfer. Confirm current eligibility rules and any account-specific fees directly with the broker.

Health savings account

HSA availability, investment menus and eligibility depend on the account arrangement and your health-plan situation. Do not assume that a workplace HSA and a retail brokerage HSA have identical features. Verify whether the account accepts contributions, what investment options are offered, how cash is handled and how beneficiaries are recorded.

Cash handling can change the long-term result

Two investors can hold identical funds and earn different results if one leaves a large balance in a low-yield default position. The relevant questions are:

  • What is the account’s default core position?
  • Is idle cash placed in a bank sweep, a government or other money-market fund, or another vehicle?
  • What yield is currently available, and how often can it change?
  • How quickly can cash be used for a trade or withdrawn?
  • What insurance or investor-protection structure applies to that position?
  • Can you change the core position, and are there eligibility or settlement restrictions?

Neither broker’s cash rate should be treated as permanent. Check the live disclosure and prospectus immediately before opening the account, especially if you expect to hold months of contributions in cash.

Fund implementation: ETFs, mutual funds and automation

When an ETF is the better implementation

An ETF can be a strong default for a taxable account when you want a portable, transparent index investment and the ability to trade during market hours. Compare its expense ratio, spread, tracking quality and fractional-share eligibility. A $0 commission does not remove the spread or the fund’s operating expenses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a mutual fund is the better implementation

A mutual fund can simplify automatic dollar-based investing and may be the only practical way to access a particular strategy. Fidelity’s no-minimum funds and ZERO expense ratio index funds are relevant here, while Schwab’s OneSource marketplace may provide the specific fund you already use. Check purchase minimums, transaction fees, redemption rules and portability before committing.

Automating contributions

  1. Choose the account type and confirm annual contribution or eligibility rules.
  2. Select the exact fund or ETF, including its ticker and share class where applicable.
  3. Set a recurring transfer amount and frequency that your cash flow can support.
  4. Specify whether the contribution buys a dollar amount or a whole number of shares.
  5. Turn on dividend and capital-gains reinvestment if it fits your plan.
  6. Review the first two or three transactions to confirm that cash moved to the intended core position and the investment order executed as expected.

Automation is useful only when the chosen security, cash position and tax treatment are appropriate. Recheck the settings after a transfer, address change or change in bank instructions.

Service, platform and support considerations

Compare the parts of the service experience you will actually use:

Feature Questions to ask
Branches and phone support Is a local branch important? What support hours and escalation options fit your situation?
Research and planning Do you need fund screeners, retirement calculators, portfolio analysis or a human planning conversation?
Mobile and desktop tools Can you easily schedule transfers, review tax lots, change beneficiaries and download statements?
Active-trading features Will advanced order types or futures access help your strategy, or encourage unnecessary trading?
Account administration How are beneficiaries, trusted contacts, checkwriting, wire transfers and estate documents handled?

A platform that you understand and can access reliably is more valuable than a feature you never use. If two brokers offer the same funds at similar costs, choose the one whose support and interface make it easier to maintain your plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision process

  1. List your accounts. Separate taxable, traditional IRA, Roth IRA and any HSA needs because rules and transfer procedures differ.
  2. List your actual investments. Write down each ETF or mutual-fund ticker, not just the asset-class name.
  3. Check availability and fees. Verify expense ratios, transaction fees, minimums, fractional eligibility and automatic-investing support at both brokers.
  4. Estimate your cash balance. If you routinely keep cash uninvested, compare the current core-position yield, liquidity and structure.
  5. Evaluate portability. Determine whether the securities can transfer in kind and whether fractional positions or proprietary funds would need special handling.
  6. Value service needs. Decide whether branches, phone support, planning tools or a specific platform feature are worth more to you than a marginal cost difference.
  7. Choose the simpler durable plan. Select the broker that lets you make the intended contributions, hold the intended funds and manage taxes with the fewest workarounds.

How to open or move an account

Opening a new account

  1. Choose the correct registration: individual, joint, traditional IRA, Roth IRA or another eligible type.
  2. Provide identity, employment and tax information required by the application.
  3. Designate beneficiaries where the account type permits it.
  4. Link a bank account and make a small test transfer if you are unsure about the instructions.
  5. Select the core position and review the cash disclosure.
  6. Enter investments only after confirming the ticker, fund share class, transaction fee and fractional rules.
  7. Save the account agreement and monitor the first statement for accuracy.

Transferring an existing account

  1. Ask the receiving broker whether your current securities are eligible for an in-kind transfer.
  2. Identify proprietary mutual funds, fractional shares, options positions and assets with special restrictions.
  3. Confirm transfer fees, expected timing and whether the transfer will be full or partial.
  4. Keep the old account open until all positions, cash and cost basis appear correctly at the new broker.
  5. Compare tax lots and unrealized gains before selling anything that could create a taxable event.
  6. Reestablish recurring deposits, dividend reinvestment and beneficiaries after the transfer.

Do not sell a taxable holding merely to make a transfer easier without first calculating the tax cost. A transfer that preserves the investment and its cost basis may be preferable to a sale, even when the receiving broker has a more attractive fund menu.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing on commission alone: Fund expenses, spreads, cash yield and advisory fees can dominate a $0 trade commission over decades.
  • Assuming all funds are interchangeable: Similar names can hide different indexes, tax treatment, minimums and transaction fees.
  • Ignoring the default cash position: A large idle balance can lose potential return if it remains in a low-yield option.
  • Buying a proprietary fund without considering portability: Check what happens if you later move the account.
  • Expecting every fractional share to transfer: Ask how fractional positions are liquidated or transferred before switching brokers.
  • Overvaluing advanced tools: Futures, complex orders and active-trading features are not necessary for a diversified long-term strategy.
  • Failing to update beneficiaries: Account registrations and beneficiary instructions should be reviewed after marriage, divorce, births, deaths or other major changes.
  • Treating a historical rate or fee as permanent: Cash yields, fund availability and pricing schedules can change; verify them at the time you act.

Bottom line

Choose Fidelity if your priority is investing tiny amounts on a recurring schedule, using $1 fractional transactions, accessing Fidelity’s ZERO expense ratio index mutual funds, or improving the treatment of idle cash. Choose Charles Schwab if a specific fund in its broad OneSource marketplace, Schwab’s service ecosystem, or futures access is central to your plan. For either broker, make the final decision using the exact securities, account type, cash position and transfer consequences—not the brand name or the $0 commission headline.
