Charles Edwards argues that Bitcoin’s quantum threat could paradoxically become bullish: a credible, time-bound plan to move the network to quantum-resistant cryptography could remove a major uncertainty discount and reprice BTC rapidly. In a 2026 interview discussion, he said such a roadmap could produce a move of “double digits” rather than merely prevent a technical crisis.

The upside case depends on mitigation arriving before a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC), not on quantum attacks succeeding. The threat is real in principle, exposure is concentrated in particular coins and address practices, and the timetable remains uncertain.

What Charles Edwards is arguing

Cointelegraph reported Edwards describing quantum risk as “somewhat counterintuitively an upside catalyst potential.” His scenario is straightforward: investors currently apply a discount for an unresolved, potentially catastrophic technology risk. If Bitcoin developers publish a credible schedule, technical design and migration process, that uncertainty could disappear quickly.

Edwards said that if Bitcoin Core developers announced a roadmap within a few months, with a commitment to solve the problem over roughly two years and clear implementation steps, it would be “amazing news.” He added that it could discount much of the risk “pretty much overnight” and said, “Double digits probably,” when asked about the potential market move.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

That is an investor interpretation, not a guaranteed price outcome. A roadmap could support a rally only if markets regard it as technically credible, politically achievable and early enough to protect exposed coins.

Can a quantum computer break Bitcoin?

Bitcoin relies on elliptic-curve digital signatures. ECDSA secures older transaction types, while Schnorr signatures secure Taproot spending. A sufficiently capable CRQC running Shor’s algorithm could derive a private key from a transaction output’s exposed public key and then authorize a competing spend.

No quantum computer today is known to pose an immediate threat to Bitcoin. The concern is the arrival of a machine with enough error-corrected, or logical, qubits to perform the attack reliably. Physical-qubit counts published by hardware companies are not directly comparable to logical-qubit requirements because error correction can require many physical qubits for each usable logical qubit.

Which Bitcoin coins are most exposed?

Quantum exposure is uneven. The clearest risk concerns outputs whose public keys are already visible on-chain:

  • Legacy pay-to-public-key outputs: the public key is recorded directly, giving an attacker the information needed for key derivation once a CRQC exists.
  • Reused addresses: after an address has spent once, its public key is revealed. Any remaining balance sent to that same address has a larger exposure than an address whose key remains hidden.
  • Recently spending outputs: even a hashed address reveals its public key during the spending window, creating a race between an attacker and the legitimate transaction before confirmation.

Coins held in common pay-to-public-key-hash addresses generally hide the public key until the owner spends. That does not make them permanently safe; it reduces the attacker’s available window and gives the network time to migrate to new rules.

Chaincode Labs estimated in a 2025 report that approximately 6.26 million BTC, worth about US$650 billion at the report’s valuation, could be vulnerable. The figure is an estimate of potentially exposed holdings, not a prediction that all of those coins will be stolen.

How soon could “Q-Day” arrive?

There is no agreed date. In a 2025 podcast transcript, Edwards discussed a possible two-to-nine-year window for breaking the relevant encryption and cited approximately 2,300 logical qubits as a threshold under discussion. He also contrasted IBM’s more conservative 2029 projection with more aggressive targets from other companies. Those statements are interview claims, and hardware roadmaps can change.

Chaincode’s 2025 analysis places the issue on a broader next-decade horizon. A survey it cites found that one-third of global experts assigned at least a 50% probability to CRQCs capable of breaking Bitcoin cryptography emerging between 2030 and 2035. The same report notes that NIST and U.S. government plans call for vulnerable cryptography to be deprecated by 2030 and disallowed by 2035.

Why a security roadmap could lift BTC

The bullish mechanism is risk removal. Bitcoin’s market value reflects not only adoption, liquidity and macroeconomic conditions but also the possibility that a future machine could seize exposed coins or undermine confidence in settlement. A dated migration plan would let investors model that risk instead of treating it as an open-ended tail event.

For the roadmap to have the effect Edwards describes, it would need to answer practical questions:

  • Which post-quantum signature scheme and script rules will Bitcoin support?
  • How will existing balances move without forcing rushed or unsafe transactions?
  • What deadlines apply to exposed outputs, and what happens to coins that do not migrate?
  • How will wallets, exchanges, miners and custodians coordinate software upgrades?
  • How will developers respond if quantum hardware improves faster than expected?

A vague promise would not remove the discount. A tested design, staged activation and enough time for holders to move funds could.

What a Bitcoin migration would involve

Chaincode describes two broad tracks: contingency measures that could be deployed in roughly two years and a more comprehensive path taking about seven years. The exact implementation remains a governance question, but the engineering work would likely include:

  1. Define quantum-resistant signatures and scripts. Bitcoin would need new spending conditions using schemes believed to withstand quantum attacks, with acceptable transaction size, verification cost and security assumptions.
  2. Activate protocol support. Developers and node operators would test a soft fork or another compatible mechanism, publish reference implementations and establish activation rules.
  3. Provide a migration window. Wallets and custodians would move funds from exposed outputs into quantum-resistant outputs before an attacker can exploit revealed keys.
  4. Handle stranded or non-migrated coins. Governance would have to decide whether old output types remain spendable, become restricted after a deadline or require additional safeguards.
  5. Coordinate the ecosystem. Exchanges, payment processors, miners and hardware wallets would need compatible software and clear user instructions.

Address reuse is avoidable today. Users should generate a fresh receiving address for each payment and avoid spending from outputs whose public keys have already been exposed unless their wallet and the network’s migration plan provide a reason to do so.

How the competing scenarios compare

Scenario What happens Likely market interpretation
Credible roadmap arrives before a CRQC Developers publish design, deadlines and migration tooling; holders have time to move exposed coins. Uncertainty discount could shrink, creating the upside repricing Edwards describes.
Roadmap is delayed or vague Technical risk remains difficult to price and exposed balances continue accumulating concern. Persistent discount and greater sensitivity to quantum-related news.
Quantum breakthrough precedes migration An attacker can target exposed public keys before broad adoption of new output types. Severe downside risk, including theft attempts and confidence damage.
Slow, comprehensive redesign A roughly seven-year path prioritizes testing and broad compatibility over speed. Potentially stronger long-term security, but less immediate reassurance.

Why mining is a secondary quantum concern

Quantum algorithms might also offer miners computational advantages, but Chaincode characterizes that risk as less clear than signature theft. Physical constraints, error-correction overhead, energy costs and Bitcoin’s difficulty adjustment limit the practical benefit of a quantum mining system. The more direct danger is unauthorized spending from outputs whose public keys are exposed.

What the 2026 Bitcoin Magazine discussion adds

A Bitcoin Magazine video published October 15, 2026 places the quantum-roadmap discussion at the 14:50 chapter mark and addresses AI and encryption risk at 17:21. The interview frames quantum progress alongside Federal Reserve policy, possible U.S. government buying, stimulus, exchange-traded-fund flows, interest rates, liquidity, hash rate, production cost and the MVRV ratio as potential drivers of Bitcoin’s next all-time high.

That context matters because quantum risk is one variable in a larger market, not an isolated price model. Even a technically strong roadmap would compete with macroeconomic liquidity, regulatory decisions and investor positioning for influence over BTC’s price.

What Bitcoin holders should watch next

  • A published Bitcoin Core proposal naming the signature scheme, script changes and activation method.
  • Wallet releases that identify exposed public keys, discourage address reuse and support migration to quantum-resistant outputs.
  • Testnet deployments, audits and performance measurements for larger post-quantum signatures.
  • Deadlines for moving legacy pay-to-public-key and reused-address balances.
  • Independent assessments of logical-qubit progress rather than headline physical-qubit counts.

Edwards’s thesis is therefore conditional: quantum risk can be bullish when developers convert an open-ended threat into a credible, funded and testable transition. Until such a plan exists, the same risk remains a potential source of sharp downside.
