Changing your Wi-Fi password disconnects devices that still have the old password saved. Phones, computers, TVs, printers, cameras, speakers, and other connected devices need the new password before they can use the network again. The router’s administrator password is a separate setting, and changing the Wi-Fi password does not change it.
What happens when you change your Wi-Fi password?
The router starts requiring the new password for Wi-Fi access. Devices with the old password saved lose their connection until you update their credentials. Google describes this as applying to all connected devices, and Wyze likewise says its devices disconnect after a Wi-Fi password or network-name change. Google Home and Nest Help · Wyze Support
The change affects access to that wireless network; it does not automatically alter the router’s administrator login or its Wi-Fi security mode. Those settings are managed separately through the router maker’s app or configuration page. Microsoft Support · Apple Support

Plan for a device-by-device update. The exact method depends on the product: a phone or laptop typically joins through its Wi-Fi settings, while smart-home devices may need their maker’s app. Google notes that some Nest or Home products may require a reset and setup to join the changed network. #1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Before the change: Make a list of devices on the network, especially ones that are hard to reach or configured through a phone app. This helps you identify what needs attention after the password changes.
- Change the password: Use the router maker’s app or configuration page from a device that can access it. The labels and menus vary by router; TP-Link, for example, documents changing wireless settings through its web interface or Tether app. TP-Link: Steps to Change Wireless Settings on a TP-Link Router
- Reconnect everyday devices: Open each device’s Wi-Fi settings, select your network, and enter the new password. If the saved connection does not work, forget the network and join it again. Apple notes that forgetting and rejoining may be needed after router setting changes. Apple Support
- Reconnect smart-home products: Follow the maker’s app-specific instructions for each speaker, display, camera, doorbell, or appliance. Do not assume every product uses the same reset or reconnection process.
- Check devices that still fail: Verify the password, then check whether the device supports the router’s Wi-Fi security mode. Compatibility can vary by model.
What to consider for cameras and doorbells
For most Nest cameras and doorbells, Google says the easiest option when replacing a router is to use the same Wi-Fi network name and password as before. If you cannot do that, update the device’s Wi-Fi details using Google’s instructions. Removing and factory-resetting a camera or doorbell can cause video history to be lost, so check the product-specific steps before resetting it. Replacing a router without reconfiguring every device
If you are replacing a router, reusing the old network name (SSID) and password can let previously connected devices join the new router without entering credentials again, provided the router and security settings are compatible. Google cautions that leaving the old router broadcasting the same network can cause confusing connections. Turn off its Wi-Fi or otherwise prevent it from continuing to broadcast that network. - Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Choose a secure mode that your devices support
A new password does not compensate for an outdated Wi-Fi security mode. The FTC recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. Microsoft recommends WPA3 where supported, while Apple describes WPA2/WPA3 Transitional mode as an option for newer WPA3 devices and older devices using WPA2 Personal AES. Check the router and device documentation: exact compatibility is model-specific. FTC: How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network · Microsoft Support · Apple Support

Change the router administrator password separately
The Wi-Fi password lets devices join the network; the administrator password controls access to router settings. Changing one does not change the other. If the router still uses its default administrator credentials, Microsoft recommends changing them separately. Microsoft: Setting up a wireless network in Windows
