To change the name Windows uses to identify your PC, open Settings > System > About, select Rename this PC, enter a new name, and restart when prompted. This changes the computer’s device name—not the Wi-Fi network name broadcast by your router. If you mean the Wi-Fi name shown when devices connect, change it in your router’s settings instead.
Rename your Windows PC
Microsoft documents this process for Windows 11 and Windows 10. The Windows device name can help you tell computers apart or manage them consistently.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > About.
- Select Rename this PC.
- Enter the new name, then select Next.
- Choose Restart now to finish immediately, or Restart later to apply the change after a restart. Save open work before choosing Restart now.
Microsoft’s full instructions are in Rename Your Windows Device.

What the name change does—and does not do
The procedure changes the name assigned to the Windows device. It does not rename the Wi-Fi network; that name is configured on the router. Renaming a PC may also obscure clues contained in a default device name, but a name change alone is not meaningful overall security protection.
