To change Facebook Messenger’s notification sound, check Messenger’s notification controls on your phone. On Android, open the Messenger notification settings and inspect the incoming-message category. On iPhone, start in Messenger’s Notifications & Sounds settings; an iPhone-wide alert-tone change does not necessarily change Messenger alone.
Change the sound on Android
-
Open Settings > Apps > Messenger > Notifications. The labels and route can vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.
-
If notification categories are listed, open the category for incoming messages and look for a sound selector. Choose a sound there if the option is available. Changing the sound for a different category may not affect the alert you hear.

If there is no sound selector, check Messenger’s own notification settings and make sure Android allows notifications for the app. The steps above are a practical starting point, not a universal path for every Android device. Android notification guidance

Test with a new incoming message. Do not assume that changing Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone will change Messenger alone. Apple documents general tone choices as applying to other apps with notifications enabled; its per-app sound example is for Messages, not Messenger. Apple’s iPhone notification and sound guide

Check that Messenger is current, then test with a new notification. These checks may help identify the issue, but do not guarantee that every build supports choosing a custom sound.
Changing a sound is not the same as muting notifications
A sound setting changes how an alert sounds when one is delivered. Muting or turning off notifications changes whether alerts are delivered. Meta’s help covers notification on/off controls and conversation-level muting; those options do not select a different tone. Meta’s Messenger notification help
