Chandler Riggs, who played Carl Grimes on The Walking Dead, has written, directed and stars in Biohazard, a 19-minute fan short adapting Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The film is scheduled to arrive online October 14, 2026. Riggs has also said he would welcome the chance to work with director Zach Cregger if Cregger continues developing the Resident Evil universe, but there is no announced sequel, offer or casting deal.
What Chandler Riggs’ Resident Evil short is
Biohazard is an independent fan production based on Capcom’s game Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, not a confirmed official film from Capcom or a studio feature. GamesRadar+ reports that Riggs wrote and directed the short and plays its lead character, Ethan Winters.

The story follows Ethan as he searches for his missing wife and becomes trapped in the nightmare surrounding the infected Baker family—the central setup of Resident Evil 7. The reported runtime is 19 minutes, making the project a compact adaptation rather than a feature-length remake.
Cast and production approach
Riggs leads the cast as Ethan Winters. GamesRadar+ reports Jason Douglas as Jack Baker, with Mary Rachel Quinn, Eugenie Bondurant, Johnathan O’Neil and Sam Coyles also appearing.
#1 Best Overall
- The delayed Not a Hero DLC content will be available to download for free for owners of any version of Resident Evil 7 biohazard
- End of Zoe is a shocking instalment of the Resident Evil 7 biohazard saga where players discover what Zoe's fate will be. Players will face off against new enemies and explore new swamp filled areas
- Taking place after the horrific events that befell Ethan Winters in Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Not a Hero brings a brand new experience playing as Chris to face new threats not met in the main game.
- As a member of New Umbrella, Chris and team quickly set up a strategy to counter this latest threat. Will Chris once again solve the mystery of this latest outbreak?
- Battery: no battery used
The production reportedly relies on practical sets and effects with limited visual effects work. That approach is especially relevant to Resident Evil 7, whose tension comes from confined interiors, physical props and a hostile family rather than large-scale spectacle.
When Biohazard is expected online
GamesRadar+ reported an online release date of October 14, 2026. Because the available reporting is dated October 13, that date is still in the future; availability should be checked on the release day rather than treated as confirmed early access.

Why the short is being discussed alongside Zach Cregger’s movie
Riggs’ project overlaps with a separate official Resident Evil production. Sony Pictures lists Zach Cregger as director of its Resident Evil film and credits Cregger and Shay Hatten as writers. Sony’s film page gives the theatrical release date as September 18, 2026.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

He also explained that the short had been trying to meet an earlier target: “We were trying to beat the clock and get it out about a month ago, but parts just didn’t align that way.”

The timing creates an unusual parallel: a fan-made adaptation of the seventh game is arriving around the same period as a new studio interpretation of the franchise. The two projects are separate, however. Riggs’ short does not establish a connection to Sony’s film, and it should not be described as an official tie-in.

He has expressed interest, but that is not the same as an offer or confirmed casting. Discussing the possibility of Cregger continuing in the franchise, Riggs said: “So, if [Cregger] wants to continue in the universe, I’m all for it. Listen, my phone is open. Hit my line!”

That comment communicates enthusiasm for future collaboration. It does not announce that Sony has commissioned a sequel, that Cregger has contacted Riggs, or that Riggs would reprise Ethan Winters in an official production. Sony’s film page lists the first movie’s director, writers and release date but does not announce a sequel.
