Yes. Chair44 is a reported single polyhedral tile that can fill three-dimensional space only in a strongly aperiodic way: its copies fit together, but the resulting tilings do not repeat periodically. “Einstein” is a pun on the German ein Stein, meaning “one stone”—one tile shape—not a reference to Albert Einstein.
What the Chair44 discovery establishes
An October 2026 arXiv note by Dmitry Kamenetsky describes Chair44 as a strongly aperiodic polyhedral monotile in three-dimensional Euclidean space, and credits the discovery to I. Tsiokos in 2026. The note says the result was announced in September 2026. Its own contribution is an independent computational re-presentation of how Chair44’s matching-rule mechanism works; it does not claim to derive the specific polyhedron.
“A monotile” means that copies of one shape can tile the space. It does not mean Chair44 is the only shape capable of doing so, or the unique solution among all possible 3D tiles. The available account supports the claim that this particular shape forces aperiodic tilings, not a claim of global uniqueness.

What “aperiodic” means in this case
In everyday terms, an aperiodic tiling has no repeating pattern that can be shifted over and over to cover the whole space. The stricter mathematical idea matters too: a strongly aperiodic construction rules out not just a perfectly repeating infinite arrangement, but arbitrarily large patches that repeat periodically. That distinction helps explain why a pattern can look orderly or contain local repetitions without being periodic overall.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A mathematical claim about all permitted tilings is not a report that someone physically assembled Chair44 tiles in a room, tested a material, or demonstrated a practical application. The result concerns the geometry and the rules governing how copies fit.
What the 3D tile looks like
Kamenetsky describes the underlying chair polytope as the cube [0,2]3 with the unit corner cube (1,2]3 removed. In simpler terms, divide a 2-by-2-by-2 cube into eight unit cubes and remove one corner cube: the seven that remain form a three-dimensional chair-like shape.

The shape’s surface encodes which neighboring placements are allowed. According to Kamenetsky’s account, those local matching constraints organize copies into larger “supertile” arrangements. Repeating that hierarchical assembly is the mechanism behind the aperiodic behavior: the tile is not simply a block that can be placed freely in any orientation or neighbor arrangement.

- There are 2,388 bare contacts between candidate placements.
- The rule allows 44 contacts; 30 of those occur in infinite tilings.
- The analysis identifies 33 one-shell clusters. Of these, 15 extend to a second shell, and all 15 force the same supertile.
These are counts in a mathematical verification, not physical measurements, performance figures, or experimental results. They describe how candidate local arrangements are filtered and how some clusters determine the larger assembly.
How Chair44 differs from the Hat and Spectre
Chair44 is not another name for the Hat or Spectre. Those are separate planar monotiles, while Chair44 is a reported 3D polyhedron. The comparison is useful because the phrase “Einstein tile” became widely known through the planar Hat.

| Tile | Dimension and shape | Reflections | What the cited account says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chair44 | 3D chair-like polyhedron made from seven unit cubes | Not stated in Kamenetsky’s account | Reported as a strongly aperiodic polyhedral monotile in R3 |
| Hat | 2D planar shape | Admitted tilings use reflected and unreflected copies | Smith, Myers, Kaplan, and Goodman-Strauss proved the planar aperiodic monotile result; their project page says the journal article appeared in Combinatorial Theory in June 2024 |
| Spectre | 2D planar chiral monotile family | Does not require reflected copies | A separate planar aperiodic monotile family |
The Hat’s name comes from its resemblance to a hat, though its outline can look like a T-shirt when rotated. Its “Einstein” label is the wordplay on ein Stein. The Spectre is a later, distinct planar family; neither is a 3D version of Chair44.
What is known about the result’s publication status
Kamenetsky’s note is dated September 30, 2026, and was posted to arXiv on October 1, 2026. It attributes Chair44 to Tsiokos and describes the result as already known. The note provides an account of the matching-rule verification, but the original Tsiokos paper is not directly available in the source record summarized here. That means the exact details of the original proof and its peer-review or journal-publication status cannot be confirmed from this account.

Is Chair44 an experimental or printable tile?
No physical demonstration or retail Chair44 set is established by the cited accounts. Printable resources associated with the Hat concern that separate 2D shape and should not be treated as Chair44 files.
A University of Tokyo release dated July 30, 2026, describes a separate optical experiment using nanoscale patterns based on the planar Hat. It reports chiral pinwheel-like diffraction patterns and optical responses that vary with incoming light direction and polarization. That photonics work is not a test or application of Chair44.
