AI-agent payments on Base have shifted from a small experiment to a high-volume micropayment system, but Chainalysis still describes the market as experimental rather than mature.
What Chainalysis measured
Chainalysis reports that cumulative transactions using Coinbase’s x402 payment protocol on Base increased from roughly 1,500 in mid-2025 (the report’s Q2 2025 starting point) to more than 138 million by the end of the period identified as Q3 2026. The figure counts protocol transactions, not unique agents, users, merchants, or profitable businesses.
| Measure | Reported result | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| x402 transactions on Base | About 1,500 in mid-2025 | The early experimental baseline |
| x402 transactions on Base | More than 138 million by Q3 2026 | Rapid growth in machine-payment activity |
| Payments in the 16 months ending September 2026 | More than 87% were between one-hundredth of a cent and 10 cents | The system is dominated by very small payments |
| Most common payment band | 1 cent to 10 cents | Typical usage favors low-cost, pay-per-use access |
Chainalysis presents the increase as evidence that agentic commerce is moving beyond demonstrations, while cautioning that transaction volume alone does not prove broad consumer adoption or sustainable profits.

What Coinbase’s x402 protocol does
x402 is a Coinbase-developed machine-payment protocol. It lets software agents pay for a web resource as part of an HTTP request, allowing an API, data service, model-inference endpoint, or other digital service to charge automatically when an agent asks for access.

How an agent payment works
- An agent requests a resource. The request can target data, an API response, a computation, or model inference.
- The endpoint asks for payment. Instead of requiring a human checkout flow, the service returns payment instructions associated with the request.
- The agent authorizes a small transfer. Its wallet or payment policy signs and sends the required amount, typically using a stablecoin.
- The service verifies settlement and responds. Once the payment is accepted, the endpoint supplies the requested resource.
This design gives autonomous software a native way to buy individual services. An agent does not need a monthly subscription or a human to approve every low-value request, provided its wallet has funds and spending rules permit the transaction.
Why the payments are mostly under 10 cents
Card networks were designed around transactions large enough to absorb authorization, interchange, fraud, and merchant-processing costs. Those economics are poorly suited to sub-dollar purchases and especially to sub-cent charges. A fee structure that is tolerable for a consumer purchase can exceed the value of a tiny API response.

Stablecoin settlement can cost less than a cent, according to the Chainalysis report. That makes a pay-as-you-go model practical: an agent can pay separately for a single data lookup, a short computation, or one inference rather than buying a large prepaid package.

What the growth says about AI-agent usage
The payment distribution points to a high-frequency, low-value pattern rather than conventional online shopping. The likely economic unit is an individual request: a price check, retrieval call, API field, generated result, or other machine-readable output. Millions of such calls can accumulate even when each payment is only a few cents.
Chainalysis also found signs that some wallets return for additional funding. Among wallets first funded in Q3 2025, 70.6% received a second funding within 30 days. For wallets first funded in Q2 2026, the corresponding share was 89.3%, after their 30-day observation window had closed.

Those figures suggest stronger persistence among newer cohorts, but they do not identify who controls the wallets, how much each wallet spent, whether the activity was commercial, or whether the underlying services made money. A funded wallet can support testing, incentives, or automated activity without representing a retained consumer.

Does 138 million transactions mean agentic commerce is mature?
No. Chainalysis explicitly characterizes agentic commerce as still being in an experimentation phase. The count demonstrates that the infrastructure can process large numbers of machine-initiated payments; it does not establish a settled business model or mass-market demand.

What the number does establish
- Base has become the principal network in the cited x402 activity.
- Machine-to-machine payments can be executed at price points that are difficult for card processing.
- Developers are testing services that charge per request rather than per subscription.
- Some newly funded wallets show repeat funding within 30 days.
What remains unknown
- How many distinct agents, developers, companies, or end users generated the transactions.
- Whether the activity is concentrated in a small number of automated services.
- Revenue, margins, fraud losses, refunds, and the proportion of paid calls that deliver lasting value.
- How reliably merchant endpoints operate and how often agents encounter failed or disputed requests.
- Whether regulatory and geographic constraints will limit stablecoin machine payments at scale.
How x402 compares with ordinary payment rails
The relevant distinction is not that one rail replaces every other rail. It is that each rail fits a different payment size and trigger.
| Criterion | x402 on Base, as described by Chainalysis | Card payments |
|---|---|---|
| Typical use in this report | Machine-to-machine purchases of data, APIs, inference, and other digital resources | Consumer-prompted purchases and agent payments initiated by a person |
| Very small payments | Designed for sub-dollar and sub-cent amounts; stablecoin settlement can cost less than a cent | Economics are poorly suited to sub-dollar and especially sub-cent transactions |
| Autonomous execution | Payment can be attached to a software request and governed by wallet rules | Usually relies on a customer checkout, stored credential, or intermediary authorization |
| Evidence supplied for adoption | More than 138 million cumulative Base transactions by Q3 2026 and repeat-funding rates of 70.6% and 89.3% for the cited cohorts | Not stated in the cited Chainalysis material |
| Broader reach, regulation, and endpoint reliability | Not established by the cited figures | Not established by the cited figures |
The comparison shows why x402 can be useful without making a universal replacement claim. Cards remain practical when a person is choosing a purchase and the amount supports card fees; stablecoin machine payments target the long tail of tiny automated transactions.
What developers and businesses should watch next
The next test is whether transaction volume converts into dependable services that agents use repeatedly. Important signals include repeat usage by independent customers, transparent spending controls, predictable settlement costs, reliable endpoint uptime, handling for failed requests, and evidence that providers earn more from each call than they spend to serve it.
For now, the strongest conclusion is narrower: Base and x402 have demonstrated rapid growth in automated micropayment activity, especially at prices below 10 cents. The available figures support infrastructure adoption and experimentation, not a verdict that agentic commerce has reached mainstream or profitable maturity.
