A certification’s exam fee is only part of its cost. This calculator also counts a possible retake, study time, and other expenses, then estimates how many months of a hypothetical salary increase would cover that total. The result is a scenario—not evidence that earning the credential will raise your pay.

Use the calculator

Enter values in the same currency. Use a decimal for the chance of one additional paid exam attempt: for example, enter 0.25 for 25%. Study hours and hourly value are estimates; extras can include books, practice tests, labs, or travel.

expected_exam_cost = exam_fee * (1 + retake_probability)
time_cost = study_hours * hourly_value
total_cost = expected_exam_cost + time_cost + extras

if monthly_salary_lift > 0:
    payback_months = total_cost / monthly_salary_lift
else:
    payback_months = infinity

Round payback to one decimal place for display. If the monthly salary lift is zero or negative, there is no finite payback under this model.

  • Exam fee: The price of one attempt, in your location and currency.
  • Retake probability: Your estimate of the chance you will pay for one extra attempt. This is not a universal pass or failure rate.
  • Study hours: The time you expect to spend preparing.
  • Hourly value: What an hour of study costs you in foregone paid work or other valuable time. If you study outside work hours, applying your full wage may overstate this cost.
  • Extras: Other expenses you want included.
  • Monthly salary lift: Your assumed additional monthly earnings attributable to the credential. Treat this as a personal scenario unless you can support it with evidence for your role and labor market.

What the estimate includes—and what it leaves out

The expected exam cost counts the first attempt plus the cost of one possible additional attempt weighted by your probability estimate. For example, a 25% estimate adds one-quarter of the exam fee. It does not model several possible retakes. You can adapt the model if you want to include multiple attempts, taxes, renewal, financing costs, or the time value of future earnings.

The calculation assumes a steady monthly salary lift and divides total cost by that amount. It does not account for when a raise might begin, whether it will last, or whether the credential caused it. A short payback period can therefore be misleading if the salary-lift input is optimistic.

Worked examples: useful arithmetic, not salary evidence

The examples below reproduce illustrative assumptions and reported outputs from Sherdil IT Academy’s indexed article. The PKR fees and salary lifts are not independently validated local prices or wage effects, and the figures do not establish that either certification causes the stated increase.

Scenario Exam fee Retake estimate Study time and value Extras Assumed monthly lift Reported total cost Reported payback
AZ-104 PKR 46,000 25% 80 hours × PKR 400 PKR 8,000 PKR 35,000 PKR 97,500 2.8 months
Google Cloud Professional-level exam PKR 56,000 35% 140 hours × PKR 400 PKR 12,000 PKR 45,000 PKR 143,600 3.2 months

The second example’s modeled cost is nearly 50% higher, while its reported payback is about half a month longer. That result follows from the chosen salary-lift assumptions; it is not a comparison of actual labor-market returns. These values are from Sherdil IT Academy’s indexed article: Sherdil IT Academy.

Check the credential’s current fees and rules

Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)

Microsoft describes AZ-104 as an intermediate exam covering Azure identities and governance, storage, compute, networking, and monitoring. Its listed exam fee depends on location; the page displayed $165 USD, which does not validate the illustrative PKR fee above. Microsoft says the first retake can be taken after 24 hours and directs candidates to its full retake policy. The page also links an AZ-104 study guide and practice assessment, and states that renewal is required every 12 months through a no-cost online assessment. Check the current details for your location before booking: Microsoft AZ-104 exam page.

Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect

Google Cloud lists the standard Professional Cloud Architect exam at $200 plus applicable tax, with a two-hour exam and certification validity of two years. It recommends at least three years of industry experience, including one or more years designing and managing Google Cloud solutions. Preparation options include an exam guide, learning path, online training, in-person classes, and hands-on labs: Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect page.

Google Cloud’s exam terms say payment is required for each attempt. Associate and Professional candidates may attempt an exam no more than four times in a two-year period. After a failure, the stated waiting periods are 14 days, then 60 days, then 365 days before the fourth attempt. Professional certifications are valid for two years and renewal requires passing the applicable exam. Terms can change, so confirm them before booking: Google Cloud certification exam terms.

How to make a comparison more useful

Compare credentials using the same currency and geography, and verify each exam’s fee, taxes, retake rules, and renewal requirements. Estimate study hours and opportunity cost consistently; include materials or labs you actually expect to buy. Then assess whether each credential fits the role you want and whether your salary-lift estimate is supported for that role and labor market. Keep the arithmetic separate from questions the calculator cannot answer, such as whether the work interests you or whether demand for the credential will last.
