CERN and Mistral announced a statement of intent on 15 October 2026 to create a long-term AI partnership for scientific discovery. Its first proposed project is a Large Physics Model for collider physics; no production model or public service has been released.
What the partnership covers
The collaboration begins with high-energy physics and is intended to develop foundation-model technology around CERN’s scientific workflows. CERN describes the goal as “the ambition to develop a single pretrained Large Physics Model – the first foundation model for collider physics.” The project is therefore a planned research and infrastructure programme, not an announced commercial product.
The model is meant to become shared scientific infrastructure through CERN’s Lighthouse Initiative. That initiative describes a CERN-anchored foundation model trained on unique high-energy-physics data and made available as infrastructure for the research community. The initial work is centred on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its particle-collision data pipeline.

CERN says the proposed model would be trained on billions of simulated proton-proton collisions associated with the LHC. “Simulated” matters: the announcement describes a training corpus generated for physics studies, not a promise that the model has already learned from every collision recorded by the operating experiments.

The design objective is one pretrained model that can support several stages of collider analysis. Instead of training an entirely separate system for each step, researchers want a model that learns relationships across the reconstruction chain and can be adapted to multiple scientific tasks.
How AI could be used on LHC collision data
Collision reconstruction
LHC detectors record electronic signals rather than a ready-made list of particles. Reconstruction algorithms infer tracks, energy deposits and other analysis objects from those signals. A foundation model could learn patterns across these transformations and help turn detector measurements into a coherent event description.
Particle identification
Once an event has been reconstructed, physicists must determine which observed signatures are consistent with particular particles. The planned model is intended to support particle identification as part of the same broader representation of an event.

Finding unexpected signals
The programme also targets the detection of unusual or unexpected signatures. This is relevant to searches for new physics, where the most interesting events may not match the assumptions built into a narrowly targeted classifier. The announcement specifies the intended use, but it does not provide anomaly-detection accuracy, false-positive rates or a benchmark.
Evaluating detector designs
CERN lists detector-design evaluation as another workload. A model trained on simulated collisions could help researchers study how proposed detector configurations affect reconstruction and physics sensitivity before hardware is built. That is a planned application, not evidence that a particular future detector has been evaluated with the system.
Why CERN wants a foundation model instead of only specialised algorithms
Current LHC reconstruction uses a chain of specialised algorithms. Each stage progressively converts detector signals into particles and other objects used in analysis. The proposed approach would try to learn across that chain in one pretrained system, so the same underlying representation could serve reconstruction, identification, unusual-event searches and design studies.

A single model could reduce duplicated training and make it easier to transfer information between tasks. It could also introduce new engineering challenges: experiments would need to validate uncertainty estimates, preserve physical interpretability where required and integrate the model with established reconstruction software. CERN has not published results showing that the proposed architecture is faster, more accurate or cheaper than existing pipelines.

CERN’s published programme separates the wider AI effort into phases. The schedule currently attached to those phases is:

The 2029 entry refers to first models, not a guaranteed public launch date. CERN says the models are expected to mature beyond 2030, and the cited programme material does not state when an external researcher, experiment or company could access a hosted endpoint or downloadable release.

Is the CERN–Mistral model open source?
There is no announced answer yet. The public material does not specify whether model weights, training code or evaluation data will be released, nor does it name a licence. It also does not describe a public API, a release schedule or rules for accessing the training corpus.
The absence of those details means the project should not be described as open source, closed source or publicly accessible at this stage. CERN’s AI strategy does set direction: systems should be trusted and transparent, scientifically reliable, explainable where required, open and collaborative, and sustainable by design. Those are governance objectives, not a published software licence or release commitment.

These gaps are especially important for a scientific model. Researchers will need to know how simulated events were generated, how closely they represent each detector and physics process, what uncertainty information the model produces, and whether independent groups can reproduce published results.

How to assess later versions
When CERN and Mistral publish technical details, the most useful comparisons will focus on:
- Training-data provenance and scale: which simulations, detector conditions and physics processes are represented, and how many events are used.
- Coverage of the reconstruction chain: whether one model genuinely supports several tasks or simply wraps separate specialist components.
- Performance and uncertainty handling: accuracy, calibration, failure modes and uncertainty estimates on held-out data.
- Compute and environmental cost: training and inference requirements compared with existing reconstruction workflows.
- Openness and reproducibility: availability of weights, code, documentation, licences and evaluation data.
- Interoperability: how the model connects with CERN experiments’ software and production systems.
- Path to production: whether research prototypes become dependable tools for real detector operations and analysis.
For now, the concrete outcome is a long-term plan to build shared AI infrastructure for collider physics. The technical model, access conditions and evidence of scientific performance remain to be published.
