Short answer: Centrus Energy is primarily a nuclear-fuel supplier, uranium enricher and technical-services contractor; uranium miners primarily extract uranium-bearing material and sell uranium products. Centrus depends heavily on enrichment capacity, outside suppliers, contracts and government programs, while miners are more directly exposed to mine output, operating costs, permitting and uranium sales prices. Centrus can occasionally sell uranium concentrates, but mining is not the center of its business model.
Where each business sits in the nuclear-fuel cycle
A reactor does not use uranium ore directly. The material moves through several industrial stages before it becomes fuel:
- Mining: Uranium-bearing ore is extracted and processed into uranium concentrate, commonly called yellowcake.
- Conversion: The concentrate is converted into a chemical form suitable for enrichment, usually uranium hexafluoride (UF6).
- Enrichment: The proportion of uranium-235 is increased. Enrichment work is measured in separative work units (SWU).
- Fuel fabrication and delivery: Enriched uranium is converted into fuel components and assembled for a reactor.
Companies can operate in more than one stage. A miner may own conversion or fuel-service assets, and a fuel supplier may buy uranium from miners rather than owning mines. That is why company-specific filings matter more than labels such as “uranium stock.”
Centrus Energy’s position
Centrus reports two segments. Its LEU segment supplies low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel components primarily to electric utilities. Its Technical Solutions segment performs uranium-enrichment and other technical work for government and commercial customers.

For most LEU sales, Centrus obtains material through a combination of suppliers, long-term contracts, spot purchases and inventory. Its utility commitments described in its 2025 Form 10-K extend as far as 2040. This makes Centrus a fuel-cycle intermediary and enricher rather than a mine-production company.
Centrus says it may occasionally sell uranium concentrates, conversion services or combined LEU packages. Those transactions do not change the company’s primary role: procuring and supplying fuel components and providing enrichment-related services.
What a uranium miner does
A mining company’s core job is to find, permit, develop and operate uranium deposits, then process the ore and deliver uranium products. Revenue is tied to how much material the company produces, the costs of extracting it, the terms of its sales contracts and the uranium price environment.
Some producers are diversified. Cameco is a useful example: its 2025 annual-report information combines uranium production and deliveries with a separate conversion business. It therefore illustrates a producer with fuel-services exposure, not a pure-play mining company and not a template for every miner.
How the business models differ
| Comparison axis | Centrus Energy | Uranium miners |
|---|---|---|
| Primary place in the fuel cycle | Fuel-component supplier, enricher and technical-services provider; most LEU sales are to utilities. | Extract and process uranium-bearing material, then sell uranium products under contracts or market-linked arrangements. |
| How inputs are obtained | External suppliers, long-term contracts, spot purchases and inventory; the company does not rely on a mine-production base for most LEU supply. | Owned or contracted mines, mills and processing facilities; availability depends on mine plans and operating performance. |
| Main revenue drivers | LEU volumes and margins, supply and contract economics, SWU pricing and Technical Solutions contracts. | Production volumes, realized uranium prices, delivery contracts, operating costs and the performance of individual assets. |
| Key market measure | SWU, an enrichment-work measure. Centrus cited a $200-per-SWU spot-price indicator at December 31, 2025. | Uranium concentrate prices and contracted realized prices, together with production and unit costs. |
| Typical operational bottleneck | Access to enrichment capacity, qualified suppliers, transport, regulatory approvals and contract execution. | Ore grades, mine throughput, labor and equipment, water and energy, permitting and construction or expansion schedules. |
| Government and technology exposure | U.S. enrichment projects, HALEU production and government technical contracts. | Varies by producer; a diversified company may also own conversion, fuel fabrication or other services. |
The distinction is important because a higher uranium price does not automatically produce the same financial effect for every fuel-cycle company. A miner may benefit from stronger realized uranium prices if production is available. Centrus may benefit from improved enrichment economics or stronger utility demand, but it must still source feed material, manage contracts and deliver the promised fuel components.
Does Centrus Energy mine uranium?
Not as its primary business. Centrus’s disclosed model centers on supplying LEU components, enrichment and technical services. The company can sometimes sell uranium concentrates or packages that include uranium and conversion, so saying it “never handles uranium” would be too broad. The accurate description is that Centrus generally buys or otherwise sources the materials needed for its fuel commitments instead of operating a mine-production portfolio comparable to a uranium producer.

This difference affects both financial analysis and risk analysis. A mine operator must replace reserves, maintain production and control extraction costs. Centrus must secure reliable supply, maintain or obtain enrichment capability and perform under long-term utility and government contracts.

What Centrus’s reported 2025 figures actually show
Centrus reported the following full-year 2025 figures in its February 10, 2026 results release. They are company-reported, denominated in U.S. dollars and tied to Centrus’s fiscal period; they are not directly comparable with another issuer’s results unless fiscal periods, accounting definitions, currencies and segment mix are matched.
| Measure | Reported amount | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Full-year revenue | $448.7 million | Sales recognized during 2025; not the value of all future commitments. |
| Full-year gross profit | $117.5 million | Revenue less cost of sales under the company’s accounting; it is not operating cash flow. |
| Full-year net income | $77.8 million | Bottom-line earnings for 2025, after expenses and applicable items. |
| Unrestricted cash at year-end | $2.0 billion | Cash reported as unrestricted at December 31, 2025. |
| Commercial LEU backlog | $2.3 billion | Contractual commitments described in the results release; backlog is not recognized revenue or guaranteed profit. |
| DOE HALEU award | $900 million | A February 2026 U.S. Department of Energy selection subject to negotiation; it should not be treated as cash already received. |
The backlog can exceed one year’s revenue because it represents future commitments. Its value still depends on delivery schedules, costs, contract terms, supplier availability and the company’s ability to perform. A backlog number alone does not establish future earnings or margins.
Why SWU prices are not uranium prices
SWU means separative work unit. It measures the work required to change the concentration of uranium-235 during enrichment. A uranium price generally refers to the value of uranium concentrate or another uranium product. They describe different points in the fuel cycle and should not be placed in the same chart as if they were equivalent commodities.
Centrus cited a SWU spot-price indicator of $200 per SWU at December 31, 2025. The same company’s cited historical low was $34 per SWU in August 2018. These are enrichment-market indicators, not prices for mined ore, yellowcake or uranium concentrate. A miner’s results may be more sensitive to uranium sales prices and mine costs, while an enricher’s economics can be affected by SWU pricing, feed costs, capacity utilization and contract structures.

Third-party supply dependence
Centrus says its LEU business relies on third-party suppliers as well as long-term agreements, spot purchases and inventory. If a supplier cannot provide material on time, Centrus may need to find replacement supply at a higher cost, renegotiate a delivery plan or risk failing to meet a utility commitment.

Geopolitical and trade disruption
Centrus’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies geopolitical events, trade bans, sanctions, tariffs and counterparties’ actions as potential disruptions to obtaining, transporting, delivering or collecting payment for LEU and its components. These risks can arise even when a mine or enrichment plant itself is operating normally.
Russian supply and replacement capacity
The filing describes an enrichment market that is oversupplied when Russian supply is included but undersupplied without it. Centrus warns that replacing Russian enrichment capacity requires new facilities that take years to deploy. That creates a tension unusual for a simple commodity producer: restricted supply can raise market opportunity, but the company may not be able to add capacity quickly enough to capture it.
Contract and delivery risk
Long-term utility commitments provide visibility but also create obligations. Centrus must obtain the right material, meet specifications, deliver on schedule and manage price or escalation provisions. A contract can be valuable and still produce weak margins if replacement supply becomes expensive or execution costs rise.
How uranium-miner risks differ
Mining risks are company-specific, so no single list describes every producer. The main exposures usually include:
- Production performance: lower grades, equipment failures, labor problems, water constraints or processing bottlenecks can reduce output.
- Operating costs: diesel, power, reagents, labor, maintenance and contractor costs can compress margins even when uranium prices are unchanged.
- Development and permitting: new mines and expansions may face environmental reviews, community objections, construction delays or changing government requirements.
- Jurisdiction: tax, royalty, export, ownership and political rules differ by country and can change the economics of an asset.
- Reserve replacement: a producer must sustain its resource base or develop new deposits as existing mines deplete.
- Sales terms: fixed-price, floor-and-ceiling, market-related and spot-linked contracts produce different realized prices from the same uranium market.
A diversified producer can have additional fuel-cycle activities. Cameco’s 2025 annual-report information describes about 230 million pounds of long-term uranium delivery commitments remaining after 2025 deliveries and about 83 million kilograms of UF6 conversion contracts. Those figures show why it would be misleading to treat every large uranium company as a mine-only business. They also are not directly comparable with Centrus’s backlog: the companies report different products, units, segments and contract definitions.
Government programs, HALEU and execution risk
High-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) is enriched above the level used for conventional LEU fuel but below weapons-grade material. It is intended for certain advanced-reactor designs and requires specialized production and handling capability.

Centrus produces HALEU under U.S. Department of Energy work and is developing expanded U.S. enrichment capability. In February 2026, the DOE selected Centrus for a $900 million HALEU production award, according to the company’s results release. The release said the award was subject to negotiation. The selection is therefore a milestone and potential source of future work, not evidence that all funds have been paid or that large-scale capacity is already operating.

Centrus President and CEO Amir Vexler described 2025 as a milestone year and referred to the company’s existing LEU business, planned enrichment business and the government’s selection for the $900 million HALEU award. That is management’s characterization in the February 10, 2026 results release, not an independent assessment; the award’s subject-to-negotiation status remains material.

If you are analyzing Centrus
- Track LEU contract volumes, delivery timing and margin provisions rather than looking only at uranium prices.
- Examine supplier concentration, inventory and the availability of replacement enrichment or conversion capacity.
- Separate commercial LEU earnings from Technical Solutions work and government-funded projects.
- Read backlog disclosures alongside cost estimates and performance obligations; backlog is not profit.
- Follow HALEU and centrifuge milestones from award or announcement through negotiation, construction, qualification and production.
- Use SWU indicators for enrichment-market context and do not substitute them for uranium-concentrate prices.
If you are analyzing a uranium miner
- Start with attributable production, unit costs, grades, reserve life and sustaining-capital needs.
- Map the contract book: fixed-price commitments, market-linked formulas, floors, ceilings and uncommitted production can have very different outcomes.
- Review permitting, jurisdiction, expansion schedules and the financial condition of each operating asset.
- Check whether the company owns conversion, fuel fabrication or other services that reduce or change its exposure to mined-uranium prices.
- Distinguish pounds produced from pounds sold and from long-term delivery commitments.
The right comparison is therefore not “which one has more uranium?” It is “which part of the fuel cycle generates earnings, and what must go right for that segment to deliver cash flow?”
Common mistakes when comparing Centrus with miners
Calling Centrus a uranium miner
This confuses occasional concentrate sales with the company’s primary operating model. Centrus is mainly a supplier, enricher and technical-services provider.

Comparing SWU and uranium prices directly
SWU measures enrichment work; uranium prices measure a uranium product. They are not interchangeable inputs.
Counting backlog as immediate revenue
Centrus’s $2.3 billion commercial LEU backlog represents commitments over time. Recognition, costs and profitability depend on delivery and contract execution.
Assuming an announced award equals completed capacity
The $900 million DOE HALEU selection was subject to negotiation. Expansion plans still carry construction, qualification, regulatory and schedule risk.

Figures and disclosures worth checking in future filings
For an up-to-date comparison, read each issuer’s latest annual and quarterly filings rather than relying on a sector label. Check:
- segment revenue and gross margin by business line;
- production, deliveries and inventory;
- contracted volumes, pricing formulas and delivery years;
- supplier and customer concentration;
- capital spending and project schedules;
- government-award terms and remaining negotiation conditions;
- currency, fiscal-year and accounting differences before comparing totals.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Uranium Marketing Annual Report, based on Form EIA-858 data for 2023–2025, lists sellers to U.S. civilian reactor operators. That table identifies sellers; it is not a market-share ranking, a mine-ownership database or a complete description of the global supplier landscape.
Bottom line: different businesses, different failure points
Centrus Energy sits between uranium producers and reactor operators, with enrichment and technical services layered onto fuel-component supply. Its 2025 results show meaningful commercial backlog, cash and earnings, while its HALEU program offers potential strategic upside subject to negotiation and execution. Its main vulnerabilities include third-party supply, enrichment capacity, geopolitical restrictions, contract performance and government-program delivery.
Uranium miners are anchored to physical production. Their results generally turn on mine output, grades, costs, permitting, jurisdiction and uranium sales terms. Diversified producers can add conversion or other fuel services, so even the mining category requires issuer-level analysis.
For a sound comparison, match each company’s place in the fuel cycle, contract structure, operating assets and reporting period. Centrus should not be evaluated as a mine operator, and a diversified miner should not be reduced to a single uranium-price chart.
