Short answer: CEX–DEX arbitrage can capture a temporary price difference between a centralized exchange and a decentralized exchange, but a displayed spread is only a candidate opportunity. Trading fees, bid–ask spread, pool fees, gas, price impact, slippage, settlement delays, inventory changes, and failed transactions can consume the entire difference. Because the CEX leg executes off-chain while the DEX leg settles on-chain, you must estimate the complete two-leg transaction before deciding whether the spread is executable.
What CEX–DEX arbitrage actually is
CEX–DEX arbitrage is a cross-venue strategy: buy an asset where it is temporarily cheaper and sell it where it is temporarily more expensive, using a centralized exchange (CEX) for one leg and a decentralized exchange (DEX) for the other. The objective is to lock in a price discrepancy after every cost and execution risk has been accounted for.
A CEX commonly matches orders in a venue-managed order book. Your trade is recorded in the exchange’s internal ledger and normally executes off-chain. A DEX commonly uses an automated market maker (AMM). Your swap changes the pool’s token balances and is confirmed by a blockchain transaction. Those are fundamentally different execution environments. The CEX order may fill quickly but leave you with an exchange balance; the DEX swap requires a signed transaction, a gas payment and block inclusion.
Consequently, a price gap visible on two screens is not proof of profit. The cheaper quote can disappear before the second leg executes, the DEX quote can worsen when your order moves the pool, or the CEX order book may not contain enough volume at the displayed price. A valid opportunity is one in which both legs can be executed for the intended size and the resulting net proceeds exceed all costs, including the cost of restoring your inventories.

How the two venues execute a trade
Centralized-exchange leg
- Mechanism: an order book pairs bids and asks, with matching and custody handled by the venue.
- Visible costs: the applicable maker or taker fee, the bid–ask spread and any difference between the quoted and actually filled prices.
- Timing: matching can be very fast, but withdrawals, deposits and internal risk checks are separate processes that can take longer.
- Exposure: you rely on the venue to hold assets and honor withdrawals while your order and inventory remain there.
Decentralized-exchange leg
- Mechanism: an AMM contract prices the swap from the pool’s reserves. The price changes as your trade consumes liquidity.
- Visible costs: the pool’s swap fee, network gas, AMM price impact and slippage between the quote and execution.
- Timing: a transaction must be propagated, selected by a validator or block builder and finalized. Congestion and fee competition make inclusion time uncertain.
- Exposure: your wallet interacts with smart contracts, validators and other blockchain infrastructure rather than a single custodian.
Why a discrepancy appears
Order-book prices and AMM prices respond to different flows. A large market order on a CEX can move its best quotes while an AMM pool still reflects its previous balance, or a swap can move the pool before centralized-market makers adjust. Transfers, bridge delays, fragmented liquidity and differing market participants can extend the gap. Arbitrageurs then trade against the stale price until the difference narrows. The process is competitive: other bots may submit the same DEX transaction or trade the CEX order first.
The complete cost model
Estimate net proceeds, not the headline spread. For a route that buys on venue A and sells on venue B, a useful expression is:
Net result = sale proceeds − purchase cost − CEX fees − DEX pool fee − gas − spread and price impact − slippage − failed-transaction cost − transfer/rebalancing cost − inventory funding cost
Use the actual order size, current liquidity and fee tier. Fees are venue-, chain-, asset- and account-specific, and they can change without notice; there is no universal CEX or DEX fee schedule that can be applied safely.
| Cost or exposure | CEX leg | DEX leg | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trading charge | Maker or taker fee for the account and order type | Pool fee set by the AMM pool | Fee rate multiplied by the quantity actually filled |
| Price paid | Bid–ask spread and order-book depth | AMM curve, pool liquidity and resulting price impact | Executable average price for the complete size, not the top quote |
| Slippage | Partial fills and movement while the order rests | Difference between quoted and confirmed swap output | Worst acceptable execution and probability of exceeding it |
| Network or settlement cost | Withdrawal, deposit and possible transfer fees; settlement is internal until assets move | Gas for submission and confirmation, including a failed or reverted transaction where applicable | Current gas estimate, congestion and the fee needed for timely inclusion |
| Inventory and funding | Capital held on the venue and financing or opportunity cost | Tokens and native gas asset held in the wallet | Cost and risk of restoring the starting balances |
The 2026 Management Science study by Barbon and Ranaldo finds that gas acts like a fixed cost relative to trade size: it weighs heavily on small trades, while larger DEX trades can have more competitive transaction costs. That is a study result, not a live quote for every chain or market.
Why trade size changes the answer
Small and large swaps fail for different economic reasons. Gas is paid per transaction rather than per dollar traded, so its percentage burden falls as the order grows. Larger orders, however, move an AMM curve and encounter thinner portions of the pool.

| Swap size in the sampled Uniswap study | Dominant observed cost | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Below $1,000 | Gas represented more than 98% of total transaction cost | Estimate from the sampled Uniswap swaps in Adams, Chan, Markovich and Wan (2023); it is not a universal figure for all chains, pools or dates. |
| Above $100,000 | Price impact and slippage together represented approximately 77% of total transaction cost per dollar | Same study sample and methodology; a different pool, fee tier or network can produce a different mix. |
The practical implication is to test several sizes instead of asking whether a token pair is profitable in the abstract. A size that appears attractive at $500 may be uneconomic after gas, while a $150,000 order may be uneconomic because its own swap changes the pool price. Plot expected net result against size and stop increasing the order when marginal price impact consumes the remaining spread.
MEV competition can consume the opportunity
DEX arbitrage is a form of maximal extractable value (MEV). Ethereum.org calls “(DEX) arbitrage … the simplest and most well-known MEV opportunity. As a result, it is also the most competitive.” Searchers compete to have transactions included before competing trades or to place them in a favorable order.
In its illustrative high-competition example, Ethereum.org’s MEV documentation says searchers may pay “90% or even more” of MEV revenue in gas. Treat that as an example of an exceptionally competitive opportunity, not an average cost. A gas bid can improve inclusion probability, but it directly reduces the amount left after the trade.
Earlier work documented priority-gas auctions and transaction-ordering competition in decentralized markets. The Flash Boys 2.0 paper describes how competing transactions can be reordered and how the resulting bidding can create congestion and instability. Your transaction can also be copied, displaced or sandwiched by another participant if its details are visible before inclusion. Private submission methods may change that exposure, but they do not remove liquidity, price or contract risk.
A disciplined execution workflow
- Define the exact route. Specify the asset, CEX market, DEX pool, chain, direction, order size and maximum holding time. Do not compare a CEX spot pair with a DEX pool for a wrapped or bridged asset without confirming that the assets are interchangeable for your settlement plan.
- Confirm executable liquidity. Read the CEX order book beyond the best bid or ask and obtain the DEX quote for the full amount. Record the average fill price, pool fee, minimum output and price impact.
- Check balances before sending. Keep the trading asset and the chain’s native gas asset in the wallet, and verify that the CEX has enough quote or base currency. Funding both venues in advance removes a transfer from the critical path but creates inventory exposure.
- Estimate current settlement conditions. Use a current gas estimate, expected confirmation time and the transaction fee required by your chosen submission method. Include a fee for a failed or reverted transaction where the chain charges one.
- Calculate a conservative net result. Apply the actual CEX fee tier, realistic order-book fills, the DEX pool fee, price impact, slippage allowance, gas, transfer costs and a reserve for adverse movement. Reject the trade if the result is not positive after a safety margin.
- Set execution limits. Use a CEX order type and size that limits unacceptable fills. Set the DEX transaction’s minimum output and deadline so that a stale quote fails rather than executing at an uncontrolled price. A failed swap still may cost gas, so choose limits deliberately.
- Choose the leg order. There is no universally safest sequence because one leg is an off-chain order and the other waits for a block. Executing the CEX trade first can leave you exposed while the DEX transaction confirms; sending the DEX transaction first can leave you with a changed pool price or a transaction that is not included. Model the unhedged interval and the failure action before submitting.
- Record both confirmations. Save the CEX fill report and the on-chain transaction hash, including amounts, fees, timestamps and execution prices. Do not treat a submitted transaction as a completed hedge until it is confirmed.
- Rebalance intentionally. After the two legs, calculate the residual asset and quote balances. Transfer or trade only when the cost and risk of rebalancing are lower than the value of maintaining the inventory at each venue.
Latency, settlement and failure modes
The spread closes before the second leg
A CEX order can fill in milliseconds while a DEX transaction waits for inclusion. During that interval another trader can remove the price difference, the pool can be moved by a separate swap, or the CEX quote can change. Use a smaller size, stricter minimum output and a preplanned abort rather than assuming the second leg will match the first.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The DEX transaction is reverted or expires
A minimum-output check can protect against a bad fill by reverting the swap, but a reverted transaction can still consume gas. If the CEX leg already executed, you now hold directional inventory. Your recovery plan should specify whether to unwind on the CEX, retry at a new quote or hold the asset; each choice has a measurable cost.

The CEX order partially fills
Partial execution can leave too little inventory for the DEX leg or create an unintended position. Monitor the filled quantity rather than the requested quantity and cancel or resize the other leg according to the actual fill.
A transfer is delayed
Using a transfer between venues for every opportunity adds confirmation time and operational dependencies. Pre-positioning balances reduces that delay but creates inventory risk and may require more capital. Treat transfer time, withdrawal limits and maintenance windows as part of the route’s latency budget.
Inventory and rebalancing risk
Maintaining balances on both venues is often operationally necessary: the CEX account needs one side of the pair and the wallet needs the other plus gas. The trade then changes those balances in opposite directions. If prices move before you rebalance, the value of the inventory can change even when the original two-leg trade was profitable.
A 2026 preprint by He, Yang and Zhou, using Binance and Uniswap V2 data, reports positive inventory risk and relationships among price discrepancies, liquidity and gas fees. Its result describes that dataset and model; it does not provide a universal retail return.
- Capital allocation: limit the fraction of total capital held at any one venue and keep a separate gas reserve.
- Balance bands: define minimum and maximum token and quote balances. Rebalance when a band is crossed, not after every trade.
- Transfer economics: compare network fees, withdrawal charges, expected delay and price risk before moving funds.
- Directional limits: stop opening new trades when an inventory imbalance would leave you materially exposed to one asset.
Liquidity and price-impact trade-offs
AMM execution is path-dependent. The same pool can quote a narrow spread for a small swap and a poor average price for a larger one. Low-liquidity tokens restrict executable size and magnify price impact. The CEX order book has an analogous depth problem: the best quote may represent only a small amount.
The American Economic Review analysis by Malamud and Rostek reports increased price impact with decentralization. The CEX–DEX study linked above likewise finds that low-liquidity tokens constrain trade size and increase price impact. These findings support checking depth and impact for the intended order, not ranking every CEX or DEX by a single quoted spread.

A Bank for International Settlements report gives a concrete historical example: the relative bid–ask spread for Tether–ETH on a popular DEX was reported as up to 30 basis points wider than on a CEX. That is an example from the report, not a current market-wide differential.

Custody, smart-contract and infrastructure exposure
Using a CEX generally means entrusting assets to a centralized venue. The relevant risks include account security, withdrawal restrictions, operational outages, counterparty failure and the venue’s handling of your collateral. A DEX avoids handing custody to a trading company for the swap, but it does not eliminate risk: you rely on the smart contract, token code, wallet security, chain validators and transaction-relay infrastructure.
The BIS report also discusses validator concentration and front-running concerns in decentralized finance. A DEX can be non-custodial and interoperable with other DeFi applications, yet those advantages come with protocol and network dependencies. Neither venue type is categorically safer; assess the specific exchange, pool, chain, token contract and custody arrangement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why measuring profit is harder than it looks
The DEX side is visible on-chain, but a CEX order executes in a private venue ledger. Public data therefore cannot simply add every observed DEX swap to a known CEX fill and call the difference trader profit. It must infer or reconstruct the off-chain leg, account for inventory and include unobserved fees.
The AFT 2025 paper “Measuring CEX-DEX Extracted Value and Searcher Profitability: The Darkest of the MEV Dark Forest” develops a framework for that problem. Its dataset covers 19 months, from August 2023 through March 2025. It reports that the studied trades could use less than 2% of block space while contributing more than 15% of total block value, based on the study and cited prior work. Those figures describe the sampled activity and measurement method, not the profitability of an individual trader.

Is CEX–DEX arbitrage profitable?
It is profitable only when the executable spread exceeds the complete cost and risk of both legs. A break-even test is:
Sell price − buy price > CEX fee + DEX fee + gas + spread cost + price impact + slippage + transfer cost + expected inventory loss + safety margin
The inequality must use average execution prices for the intended amount. If the opportunity depends on a single best bid, a low gas estimate or a transfer that may not arrive in time, it is not a robust opportunity. Competitive routes can also transfer most of the theoretical MEV to gas or priority payments, as Ethereum.org’s 90%-or-more example illustrates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

There is no permanent winner. Compare the exact route at the exact size and time.
| Decision axis | What may favor a CEX | What may favor a DEX | Question to answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Total effective cost | Deep order-book liquidity and a low account fee tier | Low pool fee and moderate gas on a suitable chain | Which route produces the better average fill after every fee? |
| Liquidity and impact | Large displayed depth on a major market | Multiple pools or aggregators with sufficient reserves | How much of the quoted liquidity is executable for this order? |
| Latency and inclusion | Fast internal matching | Direct on-chain settlement and composability | Can both legs complete before the spread closes? |

| Data quality | Private fills require exchange records or APIs | Transactions are publicly auditable but may omit the CEX leg | Can you verify the complete P&L rather than one visible leg? |
Pre-trade checklist
- Confirm the CEX market, DEX pool, chain and token contract are the intended instruments.
- Record the full-size average price on both legs, not just the first quote.
- Apply the account’s actual maker or taker fee and the pool’s current fee tier.
- Estimate gas for the chosen inclusion speed and include a failed-transaction allowance.
- Calculate AMM price impact, order-book depth and a realistic slippage range.
- Verify wallet, CEX and gas-asset balances before submitting.
- Define minimum output, order limits, deadlines and the response to a partial fill.
- Estimate the cost and price risk of rebalancing after the trade.
- Set a maximum inventory imbalance and a stop condition for worsening liquidity or gas.
- Log transaction hashes, CEX fills, timestamps and every fee for later reconciliation.
Bottom line
CEX–DEX arbitrage is best understood as a latency-sensitive execution problem, not a simple price comparison. CEX order books can offer rapid, deep execution but introduce custody and off-chain settlement dependencies. DEX pools provide wallet-based, composable trading but add gas, blockchain latency, AMM price impact, transaction-ordering competition and smart-contract exposure. The correct decision comes from a conservative, size-specific net-cost calculation and a plan for inventory, failed transactions and rebalancing. If the spread does not remain positive after those tests, it is not an arbitrage opportunity you can safely trade.
