Choose Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for production servers that need vendor accountability, certified hardware and software, security guidance, compliance evidence, or predictable maintenance. Choose CentOS Stream for development, CI, hardware and ISV integration, or a self-supported lab where the team can test incoming changes and rely on community help. Do not deploy the discontinued CentOS Linux 7 or 8 releases.
CentOS Linux is discontinued; CentOS Stream is a different product
The first decision is not between two equivalent server editions. “CentOS” now refers mainly to CentOS Stream, while the traditional CentOS Linux rebuild has reached end of life.
Red Hat states that CentOS Linux 8 updates ended in December 2021 and CentOS Linux 7 updates ended on June 30, 2024. The CentOS Project lists the same dates. Those systems no longer receive normal security fixes or bug updates from the project. Keeping one online is therefore a risk-management problem, not a supported long-term platform choice.

CentOS Stream is the public upstream development platform for future RHEL minor releases. It is built and maintained with RHEL engineering participation, but it is not a free, delayed copy of the current RHEL release. RHEL is the enterprise product downstream of Stream, where changes are stabilized, supported, documented, and released on Red Hat’s lifecycle.

This relationship explains most of the practical differences. Stream lets a team see and test changes before they become part of a RHEL minor release. RHEL offers a controlled production stream, formal support, and enterprise subscriptions.
How the release relationship works
CentOS Linux: the former rebuild
The CentOS Project describes CentOS Linux as “a rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).” Historically, packages were rebuilt from RHEL sources after the corresponding RHEL release, giving administrators a binary-compatible system without a RHEL subscription. That model ended when CentOS Linux 8 and 7 reached their stated end dates.
CentOS Stream: upstream of RHEL
The project describes Stream as “the upstream, public development branch for RHEL.” CentOS documentation says Stream is built by RHEL engineers, previews the next minor RHEL version, and provides a path for contributions that can flow into RHEL.
In operational terms, Stream sits ahead of production RHEL. Updates can arrive while they are being integrated and validated for a future RHEL minor release. That makes Stream valuable for finding compatibility problems early, but it also means an administrator must test updates rather than assume that every change has already passed a production organization’s certification process.
RHEL: the supported enterprise downstream
RHEL packages and releases are delivered as an enterprise product with a defined subscription lifecycle, security advisories, documentation, tooling, and escalation to Red Hat staff. The downstream position is intentional: customers get a more controlled maintenance path than the public development branch.

CentOS Stream vs RHEL at a glance
| Decision factor | CentOS Stream | Red Hat Enterprise Linux |
|---|---|---|
| Update position | Upstream public branch for upcoming RHEL minor releases; changes arrive before the corresponding RHEL production update. | Enterprise downstream release with a controlled production maintenance path. |
| Support owner | Community users and contributors through forums, wikis, GitHub, tutorials, and similar collaboration. | Red Hat engineers and support staff under the applicable subscription. |
| Lifecycle | Major releases are maintained for about five years. Stream 8 ended May 31, 2024; Stream 9 is listed through May 31, 2027. Stream 10 is described as a roughly five-year branch maintained until 2030, with the exact date dependent on RHEL 10 full-support timing. | Defined subscription lifecycles, with Extended Update Support options for eligible offerings and schedules. |
| Security operations | Administrators and the community must interpret advisories, test updates, and build their own escalation process. | Includes a dedicated product security team, security guidance, enterprise hardening and support processes described by Red Hat. |
| Certification | Useful for testing upcoming RHEL changes, hardware drivers, and ISV integrations; certification coverage and vendor commitments must be checked independently. | Suitable when certified hardware/software combinations and vendor accountability are requirements. |
| Staffing impact | Requires in-house Linux expertise, staging, monitoring, rollback capability, and time to investigate issues. | Subscription support can reduce the need to solve every platform issue alone, although internal operations and testing remain necessary. |
| Cost model | No RHEL subscription is required for the distribution itself; the organization pays with engineering time, infrastructure, and operational risk. | Subscription pricing varies by offering, support level, system scope, and add-ons; there is no single universal price. |
Support and accountability: who answers when a server fails?
Red Hat draws a direct distinction: “CentOS Stream and CentOS Linux support is provided by the goodwill of other users and contributors via GitHub, forums, wikis, tutorials, and other methods of collaboration. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is supported by full-time engineers and staff.”
Community support can be excellent for a skilled team. It is not the same as an accountable vendor relationship. With Stream, your organization must determine whether a regression is a packaging issue, an application incompatibility, a kernel or driver problem, or a local configuration error. You also own the process for collecting logs, finding workarounds, and deciding when to roll back.
RHEL support does not eliminate those responsibilities, but it gives you a formal escalation route and access to Red Hat documentation, advisories, and engineers under the purchased entitlement. That difference matters when an outage has a contractual response target, when auditors require evidence of patch management, or when a hardware or software supplier supports only certified RHEL combinations.
When community support is a reasonable trade
- The service is non-critical or has a tested failover.
- The team has experienced Linux administrators who can debug kernel, package, network, and storage problems.
- Updates are staged before production and can be rolled back.
- There is no requirement for a vendor support contract or certification statement.
- The organization can accept the time cost of researching fixes in public documentation and forums.
When vendor accountability should win
- Downtime has material financial, safety, or contractual consequences.
- A regulator, customer, or internal policy requires supported software and traceable security updates.
- The application vendor certifies RHEL but not Stream.
- You need a documented escalation path for a kernel, storage, networking, or security incident.
- The operations team is small enough that a prolonged platform investigation would exceed the subscription cost.
Lifecycle differences that affect planning
CentOS Stream major releases are maintained for about five years, and a new major version appears roughly every three years. The dates published by the CentOS Project are:
| Release | Published end date | Operational meaning |
|---|---|---|
| CentOS Linux 8 | December 31, 2021 | Past end of life; no normal project updates. |
| CentOS Stream 8 | May 31, 2024 | Past end of life; no normal Stream 8 maintenance. |
| CentOS Linux 7 | June 30, 2024 | Past end of life; migrate rather than continue operating it as a supported server. |
| CentOS Stream 9 | May 31, 2027 | Current listed Stream maintenance endpoint; plan the next major-release transition before this date. |
| CentOS Stream 10 | Approximately 2030 | Release notes describe roughly five years of maintenance; the exact endpoint depends on when RHEL 10 full support is complete. |
RHEL adds a subscription lifecycle and, for applicable offerings, Extended Update Support. That can let an organization remain on a selected minor release longer instead of moving every production system as soon as the next Stream changes are available. Check the lifecycle and support terms for the exact RHEL edition and region before committing a maintenance calendar.

Lifecycle length is only useful if it matches your change process. A five-year branch still requires patch testing, vulnerability response, backups, and a plan for the next major release. RHEL’s value is the predictability and support around that work, not an exemption from it.

Red Hat describes enterprise-grade RHEL as including support, consistent code quality and hardening, a dedicated product security team, and a predictable lifecycle. Those capabilities are particularly relevant when you must produce vulnerability records, patch evidence, configuration baselines, or supplier attestations.
Stream can still be secured effectively. The difference is ownership: your team chooses hardening standards, monitors advisories, validates updates, and decides whether an incoming change is safe for the workload. Stream’s position ahead of RHEL can expose a driver, library, or behavior change earlier than a RHEL customer would see it, which is useful for integration testing but undesirable as an uncontrolled production surprise.
Certification is workload-specific. Confirm support with the application, database, hardware, storage, and backup vendors involved in your design. A statement that software runs on an RHEL-compatible userland is not automatically a promise that the vendor supports every CentOS Stream kernel or package level.
Cost: subscription fees versus operating cost
There is no honest universal RHEL price. Red Hat’s subscription guide lists multiple standard and premium subscriptions, Extended Update Support add-ons, high-performance-computing offerings, and distributed-computing or edge options. Price depends on the offering, support level, deployment scope, geography, and agreement.

CentOS Stream removes the RHEL subscription charge for the distribution, but it does not make the platform free to operate. Budget for staging systems, monitoring, patch validation, on-call coverage, incident response, and the engineering time required to resolve issues without a vendor escalation path.
Red Hat also describes a Red Hat Developer Subscription for Teams that can provide no-cost RHEL development deployment for existing Red Hat customer organizations, subject to program terms. Treat eligibility, geography, system limits, and permitted use as items to verify currently. Do not assume that a developer entitlement is a blanket license for production servers.
A practical cost comparison
| Cost question | CentOS Stream | RHEL |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution subscription | No RHEL subscription required for Stream itself. | Paid subscription or another applicable entitlement; exact price not stated because offerings vary. |
| Support labor | Mostly internal, community, or separately contracted. | Includes the support scope purchased with the subscription. |
| Testing and rollback | Essential because updates are upstream of RHEL production. | Still essential, but lifecycle and vendor guidance can make planning more predictable. |
| Compliance and certification evidence | Must be assembled and validated by the organization and its vendors. | Often easier to document when the required certification and support entitlement are available. |
Which platform fits each server role?
Production web, database, and business applications
Choose RHEL when the server supports revenue-generating applications, customer data, critical internal systems, or workloads with an escalation requirement. The subscription buys more than packages: it buys a vendor relationship, documented maintenance expectations, and a controlled path for security and lifecycle decisions.
Development and continuous integration
Choose CentOS Stream when developers need an environment close to the next RHEL minor release. It can reveal compatibility issues before a production RHEL fleet receives the same changes. Keep the CI image versioned, run automated tests on every relevant update, and retain a known-good image for quick rollback.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Hardware-driver and ISV integration
Stream is a strong fit for validating drivers, kernel modules, storage systems, and commercial software against upcoming RHEL changes. Red Hat explicitly identifies hardware and ISV integration among Stream’s use cases. The integration lab should not be mistaken for a production support commitment.

Small lab or self-supported service
Stream can fit a home lab, proof of concept, or low-impact service if the operator accepts community support and has backups. Define what “acceptable failure” means before deployment; a free operating system is not a reason to put an irreplaceable database on an untested update path.
Regulated or contractually supported workloads
Use RHEL when a customer contract, regulator, insurer, or software supplier requires a supported enterprise distribution. Record the exact subscription, support level, certified components, patch policy, and lifecycle dates in the system’s operational documentation.
Migration plan for CentOS Linux 7 or 8
If you still operate CentOS Linux 7 or 8, treat migration as urgent. Those releases are beyond their stated update end dates, so waiting for the next maintenance window increases exposure to known and newly discovered vulnerabilities.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Inventory every host. Record the CentOS release, kernel, architecture, workload owner, installed repositories, third-party modules, database version, backup status, network dependencies, and maintenance window.
- Classify the workload. Mark systems as production, development, integration, lab, or decommission candidates. Identify systems that require vendor certification or a support escalation path.
- Choose the destination. Select RHEL for supported production and compliance-sensitive services. Select CentOS Stream for development, CI, integration, or self-supported systems that can accept its upstream update position.
- Build a representative test environment. Restore backups or deploy a clone with the same application, kernel modules, storage, monitoring, and authentication dependencies. Test boot, networking, certificates, scheduled jobs, backups, and failover.
- Check application and hardware support. Obtain current support statements from software, hardware, storage, and backup vendors. Do not infer Stream support from an RHEL support statement.
- Plan the migration method. For each host, choose a documented in-place conversion, a parallel rebuild, or a replacement deployment. A parallel rebuild is often easier to roll back; an in-place method can preserve configuration but needs especially careful repository and package checks.
- Capture recovery points. Verify a restorable image or backup, export application data, document boot settings, and test the recovery procedure before changing the operating system.
- Migrate a canary first. Move one low-risk system, observe logs and performance, and run application-level tests. Keep the original recovery path until the canary has completed a normal operating cycle.
- Roll out in waves. Group hosts by dependency and business owner. Stop the rollout if error rates, boot failures, package conflicts, or performance regressions appear.
- Retire the old estate. Remove EOL hosts from load balancers and monitoring only after the replacement is verified, then securely decommission or rebuild the old disks.
Do not describe an EOL CentOS Linux host as “supported” merely because it still boots or because a third party offers an unofficial package mirror. Support status is determined by the platform’s published lifecycle and your actual entitlement.
Operating CentOS Stream safely
Stream is most valuable when treated as an integration signal rather than an unattended production feed.
- Pin and document the major release used by each environment.
- Mirror or stage repositories so the same tested packages move from CI to production.
- Run automated application, kernel-module, boot, network, storage, and backup tests after updates.
- Maintain a previous bootable image or snapshot and document rollback conditions.
- Subscribe to relevant project and vendor announcements; community discussion is useful but is not a guaranteed response service.
- Separate Stream integration systems from production systems that require RHEL certification or support.
- Schedule major-release upgrades before the published end date rather than waiting for the final weeks.
Operating RHEL responsibly
RHEL reduces platform risk, but it does not replace change management. Match each server to the correct subscription and support level, keep entitlements current, and record which systems are covered by any Extended Update Support option. Use Red Hat security advisories and your organization’s vulnerability process to prioritize patches. Test updates in a staging environment, then deploy through an auditable change window with a rollback plan.
For certified workloads, retain the exact versions and hardware combinations covered by the vendor statement. A supported operating system cannot compensate for an unsupported database plug-in, storage controller, kernel module, or backup agent.
A decision checklist
- Need a vendor to investigate an outage? Choose RHEL.
- Need certified hardware or software combinations? Choose RHEL after confirming the specific certification.
- Need compliance evidence and a predictable lifecycle? Choose RHEL and select the appropriate support and lifecycle options.
- Need to test changes before they reach RHEL? Choose CentOS Stream.
- Need a low-cost CI or integration environment? Choose Stream if the team can stage and roll back updates.
- Running CentOS Linux 7 or 8? Start a migration now; neither is a supported current choice.
- Unable to pay for a subscription? Quantify internal support labor, outage exposure, and compliance cost before deciding that Stream is cheaper.
Bottom line
CentOS Stream and RHEL serve different points in the Red Hat ecosystem. Stream is the public, upstream branch for developing and testing what is likely to appear in future RHEL minor releases. RHEL is the supported enterprise platform for production responsibility. For a server where downtime, certification, security evidence, or escalation matters, RHEL is the safer choice. For development, CI, hardware and ISV integration, or a genuinely self-supported lab, Stream is appropriate when its upstream update position is part of the plan.
