Fuel can be made from cellulose-derived biomass, but the cited studies do not support a simple, routine conversion of cellulose straight into furfural and then finished fuel. Direct cellulose routes commonly emphasize 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF); furfural is more often associated with pentose-rich hemicellulose or mixed biomass. Either furan is an intermediate: producing fuel-range hydrocarbons requires further catalytic upgrading.
Can cellulose be turned into fuel?
Yes, as a multi-step biomass-conversion pathway. Cellulose is a polymer of glucose, while hemicellulose contains a different mixture of sugars, including pentoses that are commonly relevant to furfural production. Their chemistry and products therefore should not be conflated.
In the direct-cellulose studies summarized here, HMF is the prominent furan product. Furfural can appear when the feedstock is mixed lignocellulose or when cellulose-derived intermediates are processed through a particular route, but it is not an automatic or universal product of cellulose.
Furfural itself is not a fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science describes it as “a potential building block for hydrocarbon fuels and other economically important chemicals” in its 2012 research summary, “BES ‘One Pot’ Recipe for Biofuels. Turning that building block into hydrocarbons takes additional reactions.

What do cellulose-to-furan studies actually produce?
The reported results below use different feedstocks, conditions, and yield bases. They are examples of laboratory chemistry, not directly comparable performance figures or a guarantee of what another process will achieve.

The 2013 study first depolymerized solid biomass into water-soluble oligosaccharides, then heated them in the microwave-assisted biphasic step. Its yields should be read with the stated alpha-cellulose feedstock and conditions, not treated as general process yields. Likewise, the JACS mass-conversion figures have distinct feedstock and product bases: 42% refers to dry cellulose converted to HMF, while 19% refers to dry corn-stover mass converted to a mixture of HMF and furfural.

How furfural is upgraded into fuel-range hydrocarbons
After furfural is produced, catalytic reactions build or reshape carbon chains and remove oxygen. The precise sequence depends on the process; a furan intermediate is not equivalent to a finished, specification-compliant fuel.

A 2012 RSC study reported C–C coupling of furfural and related aldehydes to form fuel precursors containing 10–14 carbon atoms. The reported route then used dehydration and hydrogenation to produce straight- or branched-chain C8–C14 alkanes. These are study results under the authors’ conditions, not evidence that cellulose can be converted to such fuels in one direct reaction.

Separate biomass fractions for jet-range hydrocarbons
A corncob process study used hemicellulose to make furfural and cellulose to make levulinic acid. It then used condensation and hydroprocessing to produce bio-jet-fuel-range hydrocarbons. The two intermediates came from different fractions of the same biomass; it would be inaccurate to describe both as products of cellulose alone. The published work includes laboratory measurements and a techno-economic analysis of a pilot-scale facility, which is process analysis rather than proof of commercial deployment.
A modular route through cyclopentanone
A 2026 abstract describes a modular route from biomass-derived furfural through cyclopentanone conversion, condensation, and hydrodeoxygenation, reporting C10–C17 monocyclic hydrocarbons. The same abstract includes a simplified mass-balance estimate; that estimate is theoretical, not observed commercial fuel production.

How to interpret reported yields and fuel claims
A percentage is meaningful only alongside what was fed into the process, what product was counted, and how the result was measured. The figures above are not a head-to-head ranking.

- Feedstock: purified cellulose, alpha-cellulose, corn stover, and corncob are not interchangeable. Mixed biomass includes more than cellulose, and separate fractions can supply different intermediates.
- Product and basis: HMF yield, furfural yield, selectivity, and conversion of feedstock mass are different measures. A mass yield cannot be compared directly with a conversion percentage or selectivity figure unless the bases match.
- Conditions: temperature, time, catalyst, solvent, and treatment method affect results. The alpha-cellulose result at 443 K for nine minutes, for example, belongs to that specific laboratory procedure.
- Fuel outcome: a furan, a condensation product, a hydrocarbon blendstock, and finished fuel are distinct stages. Carbon-number ranges identify the reported molecules; they do not establish that a product meets a fuel specification.
- Evidence type: a laboratory experiment, a process model, a pilot-facility analysis, and commercial operation support different conclusions. The cited studies establish experimental routes and process analysis, not commercial production at scale.
The cited sources do not provide a common-basis comparison of lifecycle emissions, net energy balance, or cost, so they do not establish which route is best on those measures.

Is furfural-to-fuel production commercially available?
The cited evidence describes experimental chemistry and process analysis. It does not establish that these cellulose- or biomass-to-furfural fuel pathways are commercially deployed at scale or that they produce a finished fuel available to consumers. A pilot-scale facility analysis is not, on its own, evidence of an operating commercial plant.
