There is no single carrier that is best everywhere in Nebraska. A February 2026 comparison of FCC-derived coverage data puts Verizon ahead for reported 4G LTE area coverage and T-Mobile ahead for reported 5G area coverage—but neither result guarantees service at your home, inside a building, or along a rural route. Check the locations you actually use before choosing a plan.
Which carrier offers the best cell phone coverage in Nebraska?
It depends on the locations and network generation that matter to you. YourNavi’s Nebraska comparison, updated February 10, 2026, reports Verizon as the leader in its 4G LTE area measure and T-Mobile as the leader in its 5G area measure. It draws on FCC data voluntarily submitted by the three major national carriers; it is a modeled coverage comparison, not a field test or a guarantee of reception at a specific address.
| Carrier | Reported 4G LTE area | Reported 5G area |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon | 82% — YourNavi, updated February 10, 2026 | 20% — YourNavi, updated February 10, 2026 |
| AT&T | 72% — YourNavi, updated February 10, 2026 | 10% — YourNavi, updated February 10, 2026 |
| T-Mobile | 70% — YourNavi, updated February 10, 2026 | 53% — YourNavi, updated February 10, 2026 |
These are percentages of area in YourNavi’s comparison, not percentages of residents served or a promise of usable signal indoors. The comparison uses a different date and measure from Nebraska’s statewide figures below, so the two sets of numbers should not be treated as interchangeable. See YourNavi’s Nebraska coverage comparison.
What Nebraska’s statewide coverage figures show
Nebraska’s approved Digital Equity Plan reports FCC Broadband Map figures based on December 2022 data. They describe statewide area at specified speed thresholds; they are not current carrier-specific rankings. The state plan warns that the FCC map likely overstates coverage.

| Technology and map threshold | Nebraska area covered | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| 4G, 5/1 Mbps | 91.45% | Nebraska Broadband Office, 2024; FCC map data as of December 2022 |
| 5G-NR, 7/1 Mbps | 21.03% | Nebraska Broadband Office, 2024; FCC map data as of December 2022 |
| 5G-NR, 35/3 Mbps | 9.28% | Nebraska Broadband Office, 2024; FCC map data as of December 2022 |
The speed thresholds matter: a map result at 7/1 Mbps is not the same measure as one at 35/3 Mbps. The figures also represent area, not the likelihood that a particular phone will connect from a particular room or road. Nebraska’s plan says mobile connectivity remains an issue in rural areas, including for rural and tribal populations; some areas lack 4G coverage and many lack 5G coverage. Read Nebraska’s broadband planning information.
How to check coverage where you use your phone
- Compare providers on the FCC map. Open the FCC National Broadband Map, select Mobile Broadband, choose the data-as-of date, then compare providers and layers. The mobile options include 3G, 4G, and two 5G thresholds—7/1 Mbps and 35/3 Mbps—with outdoor stationary and in-vehicle views.
- Check carrier maps at specific addresses. Search your home, workplace, school, and other regular destinations on each carrier’s map. AT&T describes its displayed coverage as approximate outdoor coverage and says actual coverage may vary. Verizon’s map can show whether an address is marked for 4G LTE, 5G, or 5G Ultra Wideband. AT&T coverage map · Verizon coverage map.
- Check the routes between places. A strong result at two addresses does not establish service on the rural highway between them. Review the roads you travel regularly, especially where you rely on navigation, calls, or data.
- Account for indoor use. The FCC mobile map describes reported outdoor or in-vehicle coverage; it does not show indoor availability. A map result therefore cannot tell you reliably whether a signal will work in a particular building.
- Test before depending on the service, if possible. Use the actual phone and plan at the places where you need reliable service. If the FCC map shows availability where you cannot receive it, the FCC says a mobile availability challenge may be supported with outdoor or in-vehicle tests through its Mobile Speed Test App. FCC guidance for mobile availability challenges.
What to weigh when comparing networks and plans
- Local fit: Prioritize coverage at your home, work, indoor destinations, and recurring routes over a statewide ranking.
- 4G versus 5G: Decide which matters for your use, and note the map’s speed threshold. A larger reported 5G footprint does not by itself establish better service at your location.
- Observed reliability: Consider whether calls and data work consistently where you use them. Coverage maps are estimates, not service guarantees.
- Phone compatibility: A device must support the relevant bands to use some 5G service. Verizon notes that not all devices support all of its 5G Ultra Wideband spectrum, so confirm compatibility for your exact phone and carrier.
- Plan terms: Compare price, data limits, roaming, hotspot allowance, and network priority for the exact plan. The coverage sources cited here do not establish current plan pricing or terms.
- MVNO network access: A prepaid or mobile virtual network operator plan may use a major carrier’s network, but access, roaming, and priority can depend on the specific plan. Verify the terms directly before relying on an MVNO as a substitute for a carrier plan.
Why rural coverage needs extra checking
Nebraska’s plan identifies rural connectivity as an ongoing issue. It says some rural residents buy phones and plans from two different providers to improve coverage. That is a reported approach, not a guarantee that two providers will solve a particular dead zone: check the exact networks and locations involved before adding a second line.
