There is no evidence-based statewide winner for cell phone coverage in Alabama. The best carrier for you depends on the exact places you use your phone: check AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile at your home, work, and regular routes, then verify service with the phone and plan you expect to use.
How to compare coverage where you live in Alabama
-
Open the FCC National Broadband Map and select the mobile broadband view. Search your home address, then repeat for work, frequently visited places, and important stretches of your usual routes. If the exact address is unavailable, the FCC says you can use a town and state or select a location on the map. The FCC’s instructions were updated May 15, 2025.
-
Compare AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile separately. Inspect the available 3G, 4G, and 5G filters rather than treating all shaded areas as equivalent. The FCC map documentation describes two distinct 5G thresholds: 35/3 Mbps and 7/1 Mbps. Those modeled thresholds are not guarantees of the speed you will experience.

Check each carrier’s own coverage map for the same addresses. AT&T says its map shows approximate outdoor coverage and that actual coverage may vary, is not guaranteed, and can change. T-Mobile cautions that availability and supported features vary by location, device, and plan.

Samsung Galaxy A16 4G LTE (128GB + 4GB) International Model SM-A165F/DS Factory Unlocked, 6.7", Dual SIM, 50MP Triple Camera (Case Bundle), Black- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

-
Ask neighbors or people who travel the same routes which network works for them. If possible, test with the actual phone and plan you intend to use; a map comparison is not a substitute for local experience.
-
Judge the networks against your needs: indoor calls and data, reliability along a commute, usable 5G, and any restrictions tied to your device or plan. Map coverage alone does not establish that a plan will meet those needs.

What the coverage maps can—and cannot—tell you
FCC map: modeled outdoor or in-vehicle availability
The FCC’s National Broadband Map is useful for comparing providers at specific locations, but its mobile coverage shapes come from provider propagation models. They represent areas where a user should be able to connect outdoors or while moving in a vehicle; they do not show indoor mobile coverage. The FCC says actual experience may differ because of the device, cell-site capacity, terrain, and other conditions. Providers may also use assumptions that differ from the FCC’s, including how roaming is treated. See the FCC’s map content explanation for details.

Carrier maps: another check, not a promise
Carrier maps can help you check a specific address, but they also describe modeled or approximate coverage. AT&T’s wireless coverage map explicitly labels its display approximate outdoor coverage. T-Mobile’s coverage map notes that availability and supported features depend on location, device, and plan. A colored area on either map does not guarantee strong indoor signal, reliable calls, or a particular data speed.

Third-party Alabama map: useful context with limits
BroadbandMap.com’s Alabama map says it uses FCC data released in May 2026 for networks as of December 2025, supplemented by crowdsourced measurements. It describes its signal view as predicted outdoor quality and says it does not map indoor signal, congestion, or roaming. Use it as a cross-check, not as a definitive carrier ranking.
Why there is no defensible statewide winner
The current evidence does not establish a comparable statewide coverage percentage or a carrier that works best throughout Alabama. A statewide summary can conceal gaps at particular addresses and along rural roads or frequent driving routes. The useful comparison is local: the places you need service, the type of network shown, and whether the service works on your phone and plan.

Historical FCC staff testing illustrates why individual results should not be turned into a statewide ranking. At Four Points Road in Fruitdale, 10 of 146 Verizon stationary observations met the report’s 5 Mbps threshold (6.8%); at Federal Road in Hope Hull, all 165 of 165 Verizon observations met it (100%). These are historical, location-specific results from an FCC staff report published approximately 2019–2020—not current performance figures or a statewide comparison. The FCC staff report also reports materially different results across routes and carriers.

What to do if the FCC map looks wrong
The FCC provides a process for challenging mobile coverage information with its Mobile Speed Test App. The agency’s instructions say challenge tests must be performed outdoors or in a vehicle between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. local time. A regular QuickCheck test does not challenge the map. Review the FCC’s challenge instructions before testing, since app procedures can change.
