Set a ceiling fan to turn counterclockwise when viewed from below. You should feel a downward breeze while standing beneath it. That airflow can help people feel cooler, but it does not lower the room’s temperature.
How to tell if your fan is set for summer
Look up at the fan while it is running: in summer, the blades should turn counterclockwise from your viewpoint below. The practical check is the airflow—stand directly beneath the fan and feel for a breeze moving downward.
ENERGY STAR gives the same setting in its ceiling fan usage tips. Use the airflow check as well as the blade direction, since switch positions can differ between models.

Check the switch housing on the fan for a reversal control; ENERGY STAR says it is usually located there.

Set the control to reverse the fan’s current direction, then restart it and verify that it turns counterclockwise when viewed from below and sends a breeze downward.

If there is no obvious switch or the airflow does not match the setting, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for that model rather than guessing. Controls vary.

Why counterclockwise is the summer setting
The downward airflow creates a breeze across people in the room. Moving air helps the body feel cooler, but the fan does not cool the room itself. Switch it off when nobody is in the room.

How the setting differs in winter
