A CD-ROM audio cable is a short internal analog lead that carries sound from a compatible optical drive’s analog audio output to a CD-IN input on a sound card or motherboard. It is separate from the drive’s data and power connections, and it is optional on systems that support digital CD audio.
What a CD-ROM audio cable connects
The cable links the drive’s analog audio output to a matching audio input on the computer. Intel describes an ATAPI CD-ROM connector as a 1 × 4-pin connection between an internal drive and the audio mixer; ASUS documentation calls the receiving header CD-IN. The LG CRD-82 manual identifies analog and digital audio outputs separately, so “CD-ROM audio cable” in this context means the analog lead.
It is not the IDE/PATA ribbon cable that carries drive data, the drive’s power lead, or an S/PDIF digital-audio connection. The audio lead serves a different path from those connections.
How to identify the connector and pin layout
Four-pin arrangements are common in the cited manufacturer documentation, but pin order and connector style should not be assumed universal. For example, the ASUS P5K WS manual labels its four CD-IN pins right audio, ground, ground, and left audio. That order applies to that board; check the manual or markings for your own drive and motherboard or sound card.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When replacing a cable, match both ends: the drive-side analog audio output and the receiving CD-IN/audio header. A “4-pin” label by itself does not establish compatibility.
Do you need the analog cable?
Only if your particular drive and audio hardware rely on the analog output and matching input for playback. It is not inherently necessary for playing audio CDs. Intel notes that some desktop boards use a digital-audio solution that needs no extra connection between the drive and a CD-ROM header. ASUS likewise explains that ordinary digital CD playback can work without the analog cable, and Supermicro describes digital audio over the IDE data cable when the feature is supported and enabled in system settings.

| Audio path | What it uses | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Analog | A separate internal lead from the drive’s analog audio output to a CD-IN/audio header | When the drive and sound hardware use that analog connection |
| Digital | A supported data/software path, such as digital audio over IDE | When the board, drive, and system settings support digital CD audio; support is hardware-specific |
What to check before buying or installing one
- Identify the drive’s analog audio output and the motherboard or sound card’s CD-IN/audio header.
- Check both hardware manuals or connector labels for the connector type and pin layout.
- Confirm that your playback setup needs the analog path. If digital CD playback already works and is supported, the extra cable may not be needed.
Manufacturer documentation describes particular connector arrangements and supported playback methods, not one universal specification for every generation of optical drive and audio card.
