Yes—you can get an entry-level networking job with a CCNA as your main credential, but the certification by itself does not guarantee a job. Hiring requirements vary by employer, role, and location. Your best next step is to match your application to the actual posting and show what you can do with the networking knowledge you have studied.

What a CCNA shows—and what it does not

Cisco identifies the CCNA exam as 200-301. Its subject areas are network fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity, IP services, security fundamentals, and automation and programmability. That breadth can demonstrate that you have studied a foundational range of networking topics.

A certification is not proof that you have worked on a production network, and it is not a hiring guarantee. Employers set their own requirements, so check the experience and qualifications in each listing rather than assuming that every job with “network” in its title is within reach.

What kinds of work could it help you pursue?

Cisco describes network engineering work as designing and building physical and wireless networks, optimizing infrastructure, monitoring systems, and troubleshooting problems. Related tasks include configuration, maintenance, performance optimization, and troubleshooting. Those examples can help you identify skills to practise, but they do not mean that a CCNA alone qualifies you for a specific job title.

Search beyond listings titled “network engineer.” Depending on the employer, location, and your background, relevant openings may use different titles or be part of a broader early-career pathway. Cisco’s entry-level careers page describes internships, apprenticeships, and full-time opportunities, and encourages candidates to develop skills, gain experience, and build professional connections.

How to make your application stronger

Read each posting for fit

Apply when the stated experience and qualifications are a reasonable match for your background. Separate required qualifications from preferred ones, and look at the listed duties and technologies to judge whether you could explain how you would approach the work. Requirements differ between employers, so do not treat the job title as a reliable measure of seniority.

Make hands-on practice concrete

In your resume and interviews, describe what you configured or investigated, what went wrong, how you diagnosed it, and what you learned. A clear account of your troubleshooting process gives an employer something more specific to assess than a certification name alone. Present lab work honestly as practice, not as production experience.

Consider structured early-career routes

Where available, internships and apprenticeships can be alternatives to applying only for full-time networking roles. Also consider junior or adjacent technical positions that offer relevant duties, training, or supervision. Cisco lists these early-career options, but openings and eligibility vary.

Compare the work, not just the title

Before applying or accepting an offer, compare the actual responsibilities and conditions. Useful questions include:

  • What networking duties and technologies are part of the role?
  • How much prior experience is required, and what training or supervision is available?
  • Is the schedule regular, or does the position include on-call work?
  • Where is the role based, and is remote work available?
  • Do the duties and expectations genuinely fit a junior candidate?

Should you earn more certifications?

Not automatically. Treat additional credentials as optional steps guided by the jobs you want, not as a substitute for experience or evidence of practical ability. If postings you are targeting repeatedly ask for a specific skill or qualification, use that pattern to decide what to learn next.

How to prepare for the CCNA exam

Choose study materials that match the current exam blueprint and include opportunities to practise. One exam-specific option is Wendell Odom’s CCNA 200-301 Official Cert Guide, Volume 1, Second Edition, published by Cisco Press on May 24, 2024 (ISBN 978-0-13-822963-4). The publisher lists review exercises, practice test software, simulator exercises, and links to labs. Check the current exam version and any available updates before buying, since exam blueprints and book editions can change. Study materials can support preparation, but they cannot promise an exam pass or a job.
