Yes. BleachBit is a documented alternative to CCleaner’s free-space wipe: its Windows version includes “Wipe empty space,” and its command-line interface supports --wipe-empty-space. It is most useful for a conventional hard disk drive (HDD). For a solid-state drive (SSD), ordinary software overwrites cannot reliably reach every physical cell, so the right choice depends on whether you want to reclaim storage or sanitize data before disposal or transfer.
Which alternative should you use?
| Option | Best for | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| BleachBit “Wipe empty space” | Overwriting deleted-file remnants on an HDD | Writes over free space, but can be slow and cannot reach remapped sectors. It offers weaker guarantees on SSDs. |
| Windows Optimize Drives | Routine optimization of an SSD | Uses TRIM to tell the drive which freed clusters can be cleaned up. It is not a dedicated free-space wipe or proof of secure erasure. |
| Windows Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations | Reclaiming space by removing selected temporary or unnecessary files | Helps manage storage; it does not claim to securely erase remnants of previously deleted files. |
| Drive manufacturer’s secure-erase command | Sanitizing an SSD for transfer or disposal | Use the procedure intended for the specific drive and assurance required. |
| Physical destruction | Highest-stakes SSD disposal | Consider when the risk requires it; follow an appropriate destruction process for the drive and threat model. |
BleachBit is free and open source, supports Windows and Linux, and documents empty-space wiping among its advanced features. See the BleachBit documentation and its command-line interface guide.
How to wipe free space on an HDD with BleachBit
On a conventional HDD, wiping free space is a reasonable way to overwrite areas where deleted files may have remained without erasing the entire drive. BleachBit can do this, but the operation may take a long time. Its documentation also cautions that no wiping method guarantees removal from every physical or external copy.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIn BleachBit, select “Wipe empty space” for the relevant drive and start the operation. If using the command line, the documented option is --wipe-empty-space; consult the command-line guide for the exact syntax supported by your installed version. Avoid treating completion as proof that data is gone from remapped sectors or other copies.

Why free-space wiping is unreliable on SSDs
SSDs use wear leveling: the drive’s firmware decides where writes go, and the logical address presented to Windows may not correspond to the same physical cell that previously stored deleted data. Overprovisioned and remapped areas may also be outside the reach of a general-purpose overwrite tool. As a result, repeatedly writing to “free space” cannot establish that every old copy in flash memory was overwritten.
TRIM is different from a secure-erasure guarantee. It tells the SSD that freed clusters are available for cleanup, while the drive’s firmware determines when and how that work happens; it may not be immediate or complete. Microsoft describes SSD optimization through TRIM in its Windows drive optimization guidance. That routine optimization is useful, but it does not demonstrate that every prior data copy has been securely erased.

For SSD cleanup, distinguish space from sanitization
If you only want more available storage
Use Windows Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations to remove selected temporary and other unnecessary files. These are storage-management features, not tools for securely overwriting deleted-file remnants. Microsoft’s guidance covers Storage Sense and ways to free up drive space.
If you are transferring or retiring the SSD
Choose a sanitization method based on the data’s sensitivity and the consequences of recovery. BleachBit’s guidance points to establishing full-drive encryption before use, using a manufacturer secure-erase command, or physically destroying the drive for the highest-stakes cases. Encryption helps only if it was in place before the data was written; enabling it immediately before disposal is not a substitute for erasing existing unencrypted copies.

NIST defines media sanitization in terms of making access to target data infeasible for a given level of effort. Its current cited guidance is Special Publication 800-88 Revision 2 (2025). A suitable method depends on the drive and the assurance you need; do not assume a general-purpose cleaner can sanitize hidden SSD areas.
