ARK Invest continued adding Rocket Lab shares during the stock’s steep retreat from its late-May 2026 record. The purchases show that Cathie Wood’s firm still sees long-term value in Rocket Lab’s launch and spacecraft businesses, but they do not remove the company’s execution, cash-burn or dilution risks. The key near-term test is whether Rocket Lab can deliver its unflown Neutron rocket on schedule while converting a growing backlog into revenue.
The figures in this article reflect the reported market snapshot dated October 12, 2026. Rocket Lab’s share price, ARK’s holdings and Neutron’s schedule can change, so investors should verify current filings and company updates before acting.
What ARK Invest bought
Reports attributed to ARK Invest show approximately 1.3 million Rocket Lab (Nasdaq: RKLB) shares purchased in three waves while the stock was below half its late-May record close.

The three purchases were valued at more than $85 million in total. Across three ARK funds, reported holdings were about 3.2 million shares worth roughly $220 million at the prices used in that report. How far RKLB had fallen
The October 12 snapshot placed RKLB near $68, versus an approximately $150 record close in late May. That was a decline of about 55%, leaving the shares trading at less than half their peak closing price. A percentage drawdown does not by itself establish that a stock is cheap: the business outlook, future financing needs and valuation still determine the potential return.
Why ARK says a launch bottleneck could develop
ARK analysts Tasha Keeney and Daniel Maguire described the firm’s thesis in an October 5 newsletter. Their scenario assumes SpaceX could scale Starship toward roughly 10,000 launches a year by 2030 and eventually retire Falcon 9 late in the decade. In that view, demand for launch services could outstrip available capacity, creating an opportunity for providers such as Rocket Lab.
This is ARK’s forecast, not an established industry consensus. The cited material provides no independent third-party estimate validating 10,000 annual Starship launches or the timing of a Falcon 9 retirement. The investment case therefore depends on both an ambitious space-industry scenario and Rocket Lab executing well enough to capture resulting demand.

Rocket Lab’s operating momentum
Rocket Lab’s reported results provide concrete support for the bullish case, even though they do not prove the launch-shortage forecast.
| Measure | Reported figure | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Q2 2026 revenue | $234 million | 62% year-over-year growth |
| Q2 2026 backlog | $2.36 billion | 137% year-over-year growth |
| New Q2 2026 launch contracts | More than $437 million | Total launch backlog exceeded 90 missions |
| Q3 2026 revenue guidance | $250 million-$265 million | Company outlook for the following quarter |
The company also announced a $397 million U.S. Space Force SB-AMTI contract covering multiple spacecraft to launch on Neutron, plus more than $160 million across two geostationary-satellite contracts. Founder and chief executive Sir Peter Beck called the second quarter “another fantastic quarter for Rocket Lab,” describing the results and momentum as records for the company. That quote is management’s characterization, not an independent assessment.
Neutron is the central execution risk
Rocket Lab’s investment story increasingly depends on Neutron, its larger launch vehicle. In the cited update, first-flight hardware was in assembly, integration and testing, while stage-one tank production was aligned with delivery to the launch pad in the fourth quarter of 2026. Neutron had not yet flown in the available coverage.

Until a first flight succeeds, investors cannot judge the vehicle’s actual reliability, launch cadence, operating cost or ability to meet the performance promised in contracts. Delays could push revenue and customer payments further out, increase development spending and weaken the economics behind the backlog. A successful first flight would remove only one milestone; repeatable operations would still need to follow.

Cash burn, losses and dilution
Rocket Lab guided to a Q3 2026 adjusted EBITDA loss of $17 million-$23 million. The company’s second-quarter free-cash-flow burn was reported at about $110 million, roughly twice the year-earlier burn, as it funds Neutron and other expansion efforts.
Financing has already materially increased the share count. By mid-September, Rocket Lab had raised about $1.94 billion by selling approximately 29.3 million shares to help fund its pending Iridium acquisition. As of June 30, the company reported approximately $2.1 billion in cash and about $258 million in marketable securities. Those resources provide funding capacity, but additional capital raises could dilute existing shareholders if spending remains high.

What the valuation was implying
At a share price near $68, the cited article estimated Rocket Lab’s equity value at roughly $46 billion and valued the company at about 44 times sales. That multiple reflects the market’s expectation of substantial future growth; it is not a measure of current profitability. If Neutron slips, launch margins disappoint or revenue growth slows, a high sales multiple can contract even when the underlying business continues expanding.
How to assess RKLB after the decline
A lower price changes the entry point, not the fundamental questions. Investors evaluating the shares can use the following checkpoints:
- Neutron schedule: Watch stage-one tank delivery, pad activity, test campaigns and the first-flight date. Treat every milestone as provisional until hardware completes it.
- Launch execution: Track mission success, cadence and customer concentration rather than counting backlog dollars alone.
- Backlog quality: Check how quickly contracts convert into recognized revenue, what portion is firm versus conditional, and whether large government awards remain funded.
- Financial trajectory: Monitor free-cash-flow burn, adjusted EBITDA losses and the cash balance each quarter.
- Share count: Compare new financing and acquisition-related shares with revenue growth to see whether per-share value is keeping pace.
- Valuation: Recalculate the price-to-sales ratio using the latest market value and trailing or guided revenue instead of relying on the October snapshot.
What could make the thesis work—or fail
Bull case
Neutron reaches the pad and flies on schedule, Rocket Lab maintains launch reliability, and its spacecraft and government businesses convert the expanding backlog into sustained revenue and improving margins. In that outcome, a constrained launch market could give the company additional pricing power and capacity value.
Bear case
Neutron suffers a material delay or early-flight failure, development costs extend the cash burn, and Rocket Lab raises more equity before reaching positive cash flow. A falling valuation multiple could then compound dilution and operational setbacks.
Middle case
Rocket Lab continues growing its established businesses while Neutron slips by several quarters. Revenue could rise, but investors would still face high spending, uncertain launch economics and a valuation that assumes considerable future success.
Quick Recap
What to watch next
- Confirm whether stage-one tanks reach the launch pad in the stated fourth-quarter 2026 window.
- Follow assembly, integration and testing updates for first-flight hardware.
- Compare Q3 revenue with the $250 million-$265 million guide and examine backlog conversion.
- Review adjusted EBITDA, free cash flow, cash and marketable securities in the next results.
- Check subsequent filings for changes in ARK’s holdings and Rocket Lab’s diluted share count.
