Experimental polymer coatings reduced bacterial attachment to silicone catheter samples, but the strongest reported result—96.7% less bacteria-covered surface than a silver hydrogel comparator—came from a laboratory test, not a patient study. Researchers also saw reduced attachment in a mouse implant model; that does not establish that the coatings prevent infections in people.
What did the researchers test?
In a 2012 study, Hook and colleagues screened hundreds of experimental polymers using polymer microarrays to identify materials that resisted attachment by selected bacteria. They found related materials containing ester and cyclic hydrocarbon groups that reduced attachment by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. The team then scaled selected materials and coated silicone catheter samples. The reported properties were not predictable from the researchers’ then-current understanding of how bacterial surfaces interact with materials. Nature Biotechnology study; PubMed record.
How much did the coating reduce bacterial attachment?
In the 2012 in-vitro comparison, the selected polymer coating had 30-fold less bacterial-covered surface area—reported as a 96.7% reduction—than a commercial silver hydrogel coating. The endpoint was the area of a test surface covered by bacteria under experimental conditions. It was not a 96.7% reduction in infections, and the result should not be read as a prediction of how often catheter infections would occur in patients. Nature Biotechnology study.
What evidence goes beyond the laboratory?
The researchers also tested selected coatings in a mouse implant infection model and reported reduced bacterial attachment. This is animal-model evidence, not a clinical trial: it does not show that the coating prevents infections in people or establish its safety and performance in routine care. What did a later study add?
A 2013 follow-on study used a multigeneration polymer microarray strategy and reported bacterial attachment reductions of up to 99.3% compared with a leading commercially available silver hydrogel antibacterial material. That figure is another laboratory research result; it does not establish clinical adoption or infection prevention in patients. PubMed record for the 2013 study.
Which bacteria and surfaces are covered by these results?
The 2012 findings concern the three named species—P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and E. coli—and selected experimental materials, including coatings applied to silicone catheter samples. They do not establish that the coating works against every bacterium, every biofilm, or on other device types and surfaces. The measured outcome was bacterial attachment or surface coverage, not a universal measure of biofilm control. Nature Biotechnology study.

Is this coating available for catheters now?
The cited studies establish experimental materials and preclinical results, not a currently marketed catheter coating. They also do not establish human clinical evaluation. On this evidence, the coating should be understood as a research approach rather than a proven, available infection-prevention technology.
