Cat 8 is not an HDMI cable. Cat 8 is a shielded Ethernet cable with RJ45 connectors for computer networks, while HDMI cables carry digital audio and video between devices such as a TV and a game console. “Gold-plated” describes connector material on either type of cable; it does not identify a network category, HDMI version or performance level.
What Cat 8 actually is
Cat 8 is a copper Ethernet cabling category designed for high-speed data networks. The StarTech Cat 8 datasheet specifies operation at 10, 25 and 40Gbps, 2,000MHz bandwidth, shielded construction and support for PoE++ up to 100W. Its connectors are RJ45 plugs, the same basic connector shape used by many older Ethernet categories.
Those ratings describe the cable’s capability under the conditions and compatible equipment covered by the specification. A Cat 8 patch cable cannot make a router, switch, network card or internet service operate faster than its own limits. In a typical home, the practical speed may still be 1Gbps or less because the broadband plan and active network hardware are the bottleneck.

How HDMI cable classes differ
HDMI is a separate audio/video interface. HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. identifies official cable names including Standard HDMI, Premium High Speed HDMI, Ultra High Speed HDMI and Ultra96 HDMI. These names describe tested HDMI capabilities, not Ethernet categories.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
| Cable family | Connector and purpose | Published capability | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cat 8 Ethernet | Shielded RJ45; network links and PoE++ | 10/25/40Gbps, 2,000MHz; up to 100W PoE++ in the cited StarTech specification | RJ45 compatibility, shielding, equipment speed and PoE requirements |
| Standard HDMI | HDMI connector; basic digital audio/video | Baseline HDMI cable class | Whether it meets the display’s resolution and refresh requirements |
| Premium High Speed HDMI | HDMI connector; higher-bandwidth audio/video links | Tested for full 18Gbps bandwidth | Official Premium High Speed authentication label |
| Ultra High Speed HDMI | HDMI connector; advanced display links | Up to 48Gbps under the cited HDMI specifications | Official Ultra High Speed certification label and QR verification |
| Ultra96 HDMI | HDMI connector; newest listed high-bandwidth class | Up to 96Gbps under the cited HDMI specifications | Official Ultra96 designation and label |
HDMI LA cautions that resellers may use varied marketing language instead of the official cable names. Its certification labels and QR verification are therefore more useful shopping signals than phrases such as “gold HDMI,” “8K ready” or “premium cable.”
What gold plating does—and does not—tell you
Gold-plated contacts can resist corrosion and are a connector-construction choice. They do not turn an Ethernet cable into HDMI, raise an HDMI cable to a newer class, increase internet speed or prove that a cable passed a bandwidth-certification test. A properly made cable with another contact finish can perform correctly; the signal specification, construction, length and certified testing matter more than the color of the contacts.

Choose the cable for the connection you are making
For a router, switch or computer
- Confirm that the device has an RJ45 Ethernet port. An HDMI socket is not interchangeable with it.
- Choose Cat 8 Ethernet RJ45 cable if you need its high-speed, shielded design or PoE++ capacity. Otherwise, select an Ethernet category that matches the ports and installation.
- Check cable length and routing. Shielding and correct termination matter in electrically noisy environments, and every connected component must support the target speed.
- After installation, check the negotiated link rate in the operating system or switch interface. The displayed rate, not the package wording, shows what the connected hardware established.
For a 4K TV, console, receiver or streaming box
- Identify the features you need: resolution, refresh rate, HDR format, variable refresh rate and eARC.
- Select the HDMI class that the source and display require. For links needing up to 18Gbps, look for the Premium High Speed HDMI certification label; newer, higher-bandwidth setups may require Ultra High Speed or Ultra96 equipment.
- Verify the label and QR information rather than relying on “gold-plated” or other reseller-created descriptions.
- Connect the source directly to a compatible HDMI input when troubleshooting. An Ethernet cable cannot carry the HDMI audio/video signal.
Does HDMI with Ethernet replace a network cable?
HDMI LA describes “Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet” as a Standard HDMI cable with an additional, dedicated HDMI Ethernet Channel for device networking. This channel works only when the connected devices support that HDMI feature and use it as designed. It is not an RJ45 network lead for a router or switch, and it does not provide the same general-purpose cabling function as Ethernet.
Is Cat 8 worth buying for home networking?
Cat 8 is worthwhile when the installation has compatible multi-gigabit equipment, a need for strong shielding or a PoE++ requirement approaching the cited 100W limit. For ordinary gigabit internet and short device-to-router links, its 40Gbps headline rating may provide no practical improvement. Consider the ports, switch backplane, network adapters, cable route and upgrade plans before paying for a higher category.
