Short answer: choose Anniversary Collection for the NES, Super NES, Genesis and Game Boy foundations; Advance Collection for the three Game Boy Advance titles; and Dominus Collection for the Nintendo DS trilogy and its Haunted Castle bonuses. If you play on Nintendo Switch and want all three eras in one purchase, Nintendo also lists a Castlevania Collections Bundle. The right buy depends on the hardware generation and game style you want, not on a universal ranking.

Konami announced Castlevania Anniversary Collection on May 16, 2019, with a suggested retail price of $19.99 at announcement. The release was listed for PlayStation Store, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch eShop and Steam. That figure is a historical suggested retail price from 2019, not a current regional price or a guarantee of an active sale.

So, yes: Anniversary includes the original NES games, specifically Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest and Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. It also broadens the sampler with a Super NES entry, two Game Boy games, the Genesis release Bloodlines and the Famicom version of Kid Dracula.
Konami said it partnered with M2 to adapt the classics for modern systems: “To bring the Castlevania Anniversary Collection to life, KONAMI partnered with game developer M2 to expertly adapt these classics for modern gaming systems.” That statement describes the technical adaptation work; it does not turn the collection into a later-era compilation.
Who should choose Anniversary?
- Choose it if you want to trace the series’ early console and handheld foundations.
- Choose it if short, discrete stages appeal more than a single interconnected map.
- Choose it if you want NES, Super NES and Genesis material without buying separate retro releases.
- Skip it as your first purchase if your main goal is specifically the GBA or DS games; those are in the later collections instead.
What is in Castlevania Advance Collection?
Konami announced Castlevania Advance Collection on September 23, 2021. It is the focused Game Boy Advance package, containing all three GBA Castlevania titles documented in the announcement, plus Castlevania: Dracula X as a bonus.

The collection launched on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. The development team explained the multiplatform approach this way: “We decided to make this release a multiplatform launch so that as many people as possible could enjoy these titles on their consoles.”
Why Advance is the focused exploration-era choice
The three GBA entries are commonly grouped by players as exploration-oriented Castlevania adventures: you return to connected areas, gain abilities and open paths rather than simply clearing one unrelated stage after another. That makes Advance a more concentrated purchase than Anniversary. You are buying one handheld generation’s core trilogy, not a survey of several decades.

Dracula X changes the shape of the package by adding a bonus game outside the three GBA releases. If you are buying Advance for the trilogy, treat that title as an extra rather than as a fourth GBA game. European listings may use the Vampire’s Kiss name, so the alternate title is useful when checking a regional storefront.
Who should choose Advance?
- Choose it when the three GBA games are the reason you are shopping.
- Choose it when you prefer interconnected exploration to a sampler of early stage-based games.
- Choose it when you want a single compilation centered on one handheld generation.
- Do not choose it expecting the Nintendo DS trilogy; those games are in Dominus.
What is in Castlevania Dominus Collection?
Konami announced Castlevania Dominus Collection on August 26, 2024. The official product information gives it a release date of August 27, 2024. Its core is the three Nintendo DS Castlevania games, supplemented by two versions of Haunted Castle.

Dominus was listed for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. The product description calls Haunted Castle Revisited “a reimagined version of the very first Castlevania arcade game.” That is a different proposition from a straight archival port: the collection pairs the documented DS games with both the arcade original and a new reimagining.
Who should choose Dominus?
- Choose it if your priority is the Nintendo DS trilogy.
- Choose it if you want the newest of the three compilations covered here.
- Choose it if the Haunted Castle arcade material and its reimagined counterpart are meaningful extras.
- Do not choose it as a substitute for the GBA trilogy; Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow are in Advance.
Advance or Dominus: which is better?
There is no universal winner because the collections target adjacent but different handheld generations. Use the decision points below instead of treating the newer release as automatically superior.

Advance is the better match for a reader who specifically says “I want the GBA games.” Dominus is the better match for “I want the DS games.” If you have no era preference and want the broadest modern-era handheld coverage, buying both is more comprehensive than trying to make one stand in for the other.

Which collection has the GBA games?
Castlevania Advance Collection has the documented GBA games: Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow. It also includes Dracula X. Anniversary contains Game Boy titles, but not these GBA releases; Dominus contains the DS trilogy, not the GBA trilogy.

The bundle is a digital-storefront option in the documented listing. Confirm the exact contents and price shown for your country before buying: regional storefronts can differ, and the listing information does not establish a single worldwide price or a physical edition. If you already own one collection, compare the checkout contents carefully so you do not pay twice for the same entitlement.

When the Switch bundle makes sense
- You want all three collection families and prefer one purchase on Switch.
- You value the documented sketches and artwork included in the bundle listing.
- You are comfortable with a digital storefront transaction and have checked your region’s current listing.
When separate purchases are more sensible
- You only want one era, such as the GBA trilogy or the DS trilogy.

- Check your platform. Compare your console or PC storefront with the platform table above, paying attention to the different PlayStation and Xbox generations listed for Advance and Dominus.
- Check the regional product page. Confirm the game list, edition, price, language or naming differences and whether the purchase is digital before you pay.
- Decide between one collection and the Switch bundle. On Switch, the bundle is the documented route to grouped Anniversary, Advance and Dominus content; elsewhere, plan on evaluating the individual collections.

Common buying mistakes
Assuming “Anniversary” means every classic game
Anniversary is a curated eight-game set, not a claim that every Castlevania release from the early hardware generations is present. Its documented list is the eight titles in the table above.
Buying Advance for the DS trilogy
The name “Advance” refers to the GBA-focused lineup. The DS games are grouped in Dominus, whose list begins with Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia.
Confusing the two versions of Dracula X
Advance’s bonus game is identified as Castlevania: Dracula X and is also known as Castlevania: Vampire’s Kiss in Europe. Check the regional title when searching a storefront.
Treating a historical launch price as today’s price
The $19.99 figure belongs to Konami’s 2019 Anniversary announcement and was a suggested retail price at that time. It does not establish a current price, discount or price parity across regions and platforms.
Assuming the Switch bundle is a universal edition
Nintendo’s documented bundle listing is for Switch. Verify whether your local listing contains the same collection content and whether it is digital before purchasing; do not assume the bundle transfers to another platform.

How the collections differ as a playing experience
Anniversary: short-form historical variety
Anniversary moves across NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Genesis and Famicom material. That variety is its central appeal: you can sample several hardware approaches and the early stage-based format in one sitting. It is the strongest choice for learning where the series’ traditional action design came from, even if you ultimately prefer the later exploration games.
Advance: one handheld generation in depth
Advance narrows the hardware range but gives you the complete documented GBA trilogy. Its identity is consistency: three related handheld adventures, then a bonus Dracula X release. Choose it when depth within the GBA era matters more than covering multiple older systems.
Dominus: DS-era focus with arcade context
